Basehall is 4oing its best to be the big noise in the sports circle around these parts but, the weather- man won't cooperate in the least. However the popu- lar game is gradually grinding a way .out of its winter hibernation •act and :before long will, soar as the top topie of conversation. If WO were referring to major league teams in - Volving tile "Drug-addiet" DETROIT; TIGERS and the 'Night Club" NEW YORK YANKEES, we can honest- ly say it is the top topic. To prove our point, we'd ae to. recall an incident that took place in MIRY WITH'S BAREER SHOP, Last Tuesday -night we dropped in to get our short- tont shorter than ever and naturally got in a -conversation about SMITTY'S beloved YANKEES. While we were making excuses to one another as to Why -CASEY'S boys were in such a tailspin, in walked HAROLD WOLFE. We couldn't tell if he was carry- ing. a. Even though pros and .cons turned up for both sides,. everyone .agreecl on one subject and that was the. splendid showing that Windsorite REND BER- TQIA was making in playing the hot corner for the BENGALS and in his hitting at the plate, Back in our country once again, the weather belted our HURON -PERTH LEAGUE opener for a loop in DASHWOOD on Monday but the teams will try again on FridayinEXETER. The law of averages says that "good weather" must prevail sooner .or later so don't gife up the ship boys! The Huron -Perth League should prove to be quite interesting this year as the teanis are repotted to be well balanced, * * • * * • . IVINURICE 'ROCKET" RICHARD, whom we met atthe iii -annual sports banquet at RCAF Centralia, passed on. the news to us that DICK IRVIN, the fabu- lous mastermind of the hockey world in the NATION- AL HOCKEY LEAGUE for years, was on the "critical" list. In fact things looked so bad for IRVIN that just before the "ROCKET" left his MONTREAL home he received a phone call from DOUG HARVEY ask- ing for blood for the executive member of Les Canadiens. Harvey was calling all the hockey players On the Montreal club within striking distance of the phone to donate ,blood if at all possible. This gave ,us quite a little jolt to hear really how bad the admirable Irvin was: IRVIN; who had spent 27 long years i,n all in the N.H.L. which included three with the.CH1CAGO BLACK HAWKS; nine with TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS and 15 with MONTREAL CANADIENS,-iirill leave a tremendous gap in the hockey wor1c1::faa 'he did a big job in promoting the game and dJdiit well. LOPEZ came out with the prediction that the once powerful YANKEES are faltering and that any one of four clubs could beat • them out of first place. The'way things look right now, he may have something. Incidentally, the four teams he predicted were CLEVELAND, DETROIT, BOSTON and of course his PALE HOSE.
