[ Exeter Mohawk Coach Derry '.•S31.111/MAIp1HMUINIII mIIIMinnikine Allr.If11111A1nHINn1111111t1,nfaANUmm1h., Baseball is doing its best to be the big noise in the sports circle around these parts but the weather- man won't co-operate in the least. However the popu- lar game is gradually grinding a way out of its winter hibernation act ,and before long will soar as the top topic .oi; conversation. If we were referring to major league teams in- volving the "Drug.addict" DETROIT TIGERS and the "Night Club" NEW 'YORK YANKEES, we can honest- ly say it is the top topic. 'To prove our point, we'd e tQ recall an incident that took place in JERRY. SMITH'S BARBER SHOP, ! Last, Tuesday night we dropped in to get our short tons shorter than ever and naturally got in a conversation about SMITTY'S beloved YANKEES.. While 'We were shaking excuses to one another as to. why CASEY'S boys were in such a tailspin, in walked • HAROLD WOLFE. We couldn't tell if he was carry- ing a TIGER BANNER in his hand or not but man, does he. know that DETR,pIT club inside out. If JERRY'S waiting customers didn't know any facts or figures about these two AMERICAN LEAGUE ball clubs before they entered his barber shop, I'm sure they did when they left. In fact they could probably fill in between in- nings at the broadcasting 'booth for the announcer with more detail data than they got on the atom bomb. Even though pros and cons turned up for both sides, everyone agreed on one subject and that was the splendid showing that Windsorite RENO BER- TOIA was snaking in playing the hot corner for the BENGALS and in his hitting at the plate. Back in our country once again, the weather belted our HURON -PERTH LEAGUE opener for ;a loop in DASHWOOD on Monday but the teams will try again on Friday' in EXETER. The law of averages says that "good weather" must prevail sooner or later so don't give up the ship boys! The Huron -Perth League should prove to be quite interesting this year as the teams are reported to be well balanced. *.... , * * ' * , * MAURICE' "ROCKET" RICHARD, whom we met at the hi -annual sports banquet at RCAF Centralia, passed on 'the news to us that DICK IRVIN, the fabu- lous mastermind of the hockey world in the NATION- AL HOCKEY LEAGUE for years, was on the "critical" list. In fact' things looked so bad for IRVIN that just before the "ROCKET" left his MONTREAL home he received a phone- call from DOUG HARVEY ask- ing for blood for the executive member of Les Canadiens. Harvey was calling all the hockey players on the Montreal club within striking distance of the phone to donate .blood if at •all possible. This gave ;us quite a little jolt to hear really how bad the admirable Irvin was. IRVIN; who had spent 27 long year, iii all in the N.H.L.. which included three, with the. CHICAGO BLACK HAWKS; nine with TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS and 15 with MONTREAL CANADIENS, will. leave a tremendous gap in the hockey worlds-As`be did a big lob in promoting the ,game and clitt-it well. Hats off to a man this country has a right" or be',proud of! * .' >t: * -*- * • CHICAGO WHITE SOX, under the guiding hand of AL LOPEZ who handled the CLEVELAND IN- DIANS last year, are really setting a torrid pace in the AMERICAN LEAGUE race. LOPEZ came out with the prediction that the once powerful YANKEES are faltering and that any one of four clubs could beat them out of first place. The'way things look right now, he may have something. Incidentally, the four teams he predicted were CLEVELAND, DETROIT, BOSTON and of course his PALE HOSE. Myself, I wouldn't exactly count the BRONX BOMBERS out of the running yet as there's still a long schedule to go but it seems that no mat- ter who does win it, they are in for a R-E-A-L battle in the world series as BROOKLYN, .CINCIN- ,ATT1 'and MILWAUKEE all have powerhouses loaded with dynamite waiting to explode in the money series. Plans are being made to hold the bouts once every two weeks in each centre. in the local arena until the ice is put in which is some time in October or early November. Normally the events" will run from April " to November wher- ever possible but due to the late start this year plans had to be changed. .The bouts could be held all year round if a suitable -sized building that was heated could be found but as it stands now, the mat game can only continue until the ice goes into the arena.
