Mrs. Andrew Johnston was
guest speaker at the May meet-
ing of Caven Congregational
Circle held at the home of Mrs.
Harry Strang on Ttiesday eve-
ning.
Mrs. Johnston told gf the peo-
ple and customs of Holland, her
native land, Hollanders do a
great deal of walking and bicyc-
ling she said. A. bicycle path
wide enough for two 'cycles is

"Holland's educational system

The first inebting of the 4-H,
Garden Club sponsored by Elim-
ville Women's Institute was held
on Tuesday at the home ,of the
leader, Mrs. Norman Jaques.
Miss Ruth Skinner is .assistant
leader.
Greta Stephen was elected
president; Margaret Brock, sec-
retary; Mary McBride, press
reporter. The roll call, "my fav-
orite flower' was answered by
nine members.
It was decided to call the club
"The Willing Workers." The next
meeting will be on May 20.

Mrs. Thomas W. Fry, 75, Gode-
rich resident for .50 years and
mother of Mrs. W. Wedlake,. of
town, passed away on Monday.

the synod sessions of Huron
Diocese in London this week.

won third prize in a nation-wide
essay contest sponsored by "The
Canadian Guide" recently. Her
story was titled, "Song of the

Special Night
In a flying up ceremony at the
Scout Hall, Exeter, Shirley Gent-
tner of First Pack and Susan
Dinney of Second Pack became
Guides. In a walking -up cere-
mony Barbara Janke, Sue Svend-
sen, Elsie Gosar and .Carolynne
Simmons joined the Guides.
Four Brownies, Dianne and
Elizabeth Knox, Susan Goman
and Margaret Snelgrove were
enrolled in the Second Pack with
Miss Elly Bakker as leader,
Service Stars and badges were
presented by . Captain of the
Guides. Mrs. .,Robert Luxton.
Miss' Lauretta Seigner, district
commissioner, also assisted.
Miss Seigner has been appoint-
ed Division Commissioner for
Huron division and Mrs. Luxton
is district commissioner. Miss
Bakker received her Warrant as
Brownie Pack leader.
It was announced that Dianne
Knox, daughter of Rev, and Mrs.
N. D. Knox, Exeter, had won
third prize in a nation-wide es-
say contest for Brownies, The
contest was sponsored by the
magazine, "Canadian Guide."
Campfire, songs, and lunch
served by the Mothers' auxiliary
closed the meeting.

A presentation was held Thurs-
day eveningin Neil's. School for
Mrs, Beatrice Dixon, who has
sold her farm to Mr. Earl Lewis.
Mrs. Jack Rosser of Aliso. .Craig
was chairlady.
After da program of readings
and songs, Mrs. Dixon was pre-
sented with an electric floor
polisher, an occasional chair,
electric lanip and a toaster. Mrs.
Dixon made a suitable reply.

OPERATION MAKES NEW GIRL OF HER — When Lor-
raine Kropf, two-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd
A. Kropf, of Stratford, Ont., returned home after an opera-
tion for pulmonary stenosis, her brothers and sisters did
not recognize her., When. she went to hospital, her body
was swollen and she was unable to walk. Now she is a
rosy-cheeked baby who can play with Gregory, six, Lor-
raine, 13, and Stephen, three. In the operation, Lorraine's
pulmonary valve was enlarged to permit a greater flow of
blood.

speaker at the. May meeting of
the Willing Workers Evening
Auxiliary of James Street Church
on Monday night for Which the
theme was "Home Missions and.
Citizenship."
Mrs. Van Farowe told of her
work with her husband, Rev. R,
Van Farowe, of the Bethel Re-
form Church. They serve a large
territory, ministering to the i
church n Strathroy as well as
the community around Exeter.
"Some weeks we travel as much
as 800 miles in our work of at-
tending meetings and visiting our
people," she, said.
She spoke particularly of the
mother or homemaker of the new
Canadian family. The father in
his work mingles with his fellow
men and soon picks up the lan-
guage'and customs. The children
also learn quickly front other
children but mother stays home
and is often very lonely for com-
panionship. , The children often

Meet At Elimville
The spring meeting 'of the -Hu-
Ten Waves group of the Mary
Hastings Housewives' Club was
held at the home of Mrs, Delmer
Skinner, Elimville, on _Tuesday
afternoon.
Twenty members present rep-
resented Thedford, Exeter, Dash-
wood, Zurich, Crediton and Elim-
ville. The date of the annual pic-
nic was set for July 16 at River-
view Park. An invitation was re-
ceived for the area picnic at
Wingham on July 10.
Miss Frances Skinner contribu-
ted a piano solo. The past presi-
dent, .Mrs. Harold Thiel, Zurich,
waspresented with a gift by Mrs.
Ervin Rader, Dashwood, on be-
half. of the club.

plans were made for the C.G.I.T.
