deaths (11,31G) were persons
over the age of sbay-five. Only
484 of the cancer deaths were in

cer deaths only 400 Were female
and 1,824 male, So far, no ade-
quate reason has been dis-
covered for this great difference
in males and females for deaths
from lung cancer.
For females, the highest mor-
tality was from cancer of the
breast (1,745) followed by cancer
of the large intestine (1,316), can-
cer of the stomach (983), can-
cer of the cervix (604) and ute-

here is that in all the sites where
males and female can be com-
pared the large intestine is the
only site where women show
more deaths than men (1,078),

PAI;rtality Ra4 Changes
'- Cancer Society: officials point
out that interesting changes in
the mortality rate of certain
sites appeared in the period frem
1941 to 1953. For instance, caneer
of the mouth and tongue showed
a significant decrease in morta-
lity in males'but no significant
change in females. The death
rate from cancer of the urinary
organs showed a significant in-
crease for mates but no change
for females. There was a signi-
ficant decrease in the death rate
for cancer of the uterus. For lue-
kemia, on the other hand there
is a significant increase in the
death rate for both males and fe-
males, although the total num-
ber who die from this disease is
still small (850 of all ages during
1955).
While the overall death rate
for cancer shows a slight increase
from year to year, this can be
accounted for by the fact that
eaclt year fewer people die from
other once,prominent killers such
As pneumonia and infection. Ac-
tually, a greater percentage of
cancer .patients are being cured
each year by improved radiation
and surgery techniques.
"The important thing in most
banter fteatnient Is early diag-
nosis," Dr. R. M. Taylor, execu-
tive director of the Society, ex-
plains. "There is no doubt that
the cure rate can be signifi-
cantly increased when more
people understand the symptoms
and the importance of seeking
early medicat care."
