Cancer Society offi. ciale point our, however, that this is almost exactly the same at the number of deaths from stomach eancer during 1954 (2,947) and when the increase in population is taken into Ac. egtint the 1955 figure represents a significant decrease in the death rate for cancer of this site. This fellows a definite trend of a reduction in the stomach cancer death rate over the past ten years. , IncreaseIn Luna Peens Lung cancer deaths, however. show a definite increase over the P2,r2741ous 19375e5a) a n(1d9th51 s SGin 19f5o41;- lows a definite 'trend for cancer of this site. For instance, caneer of the mouth and tongue showed a significant decrease in morta- lity in males'but no significant change in females. The death rate from cancer of the urinary organs showed a significant in- crease for mates but no change for females. There was a signi- ficant decrease in the death rate for cancer of the uterus. For lue- kemia, on the other hand there is a significant increase in the death rate for both males and fe- males, although the total num- ber who die from this disease is still small (850 of all ages during 1955). While the overall death rate for cancer shows a slight increase from year to year, this can be accounted for by the fact that eaclt year fewer people die from other once, prominent killers such As pneumonia and infection. Ac- tually, a greater percentage of cancer .patients are being cured each year by improved radiation and surgery techniques. "The important thing in most banter fteatnient Is early diag- nosis," Dr. R. M. Taylor, execu- tive director of the Society, ex- plains. "There is no doubt that the cure rate can be signifi- cantly increased when more people understand the symptoms and the importance of seeking early medicat care."
