Bales Hay
.In
A new baler that measures
hay. with almost the same ear
fanners use in measuring feed
for their livestock is now in
production and will soon be
available to area farmers a
Exeter Farm Equipment, in
Exeter," New Holland dealer..
The hayliner, according to
Dick Jermyn, produces bales
with even slices—just like it
loaves of bread.
The local dealer explained the
new baler's action this way;
As the hay is picked up in the
field, it's fed into a baling cham-
ber by six forks. The forks, tra-
veling in a ferris-wheel motion,
take a "bite" each time they
come down qn the hay. This
moves just enough hay into the
chamber to make one slice of
the bale.
If more hay than is needed for
one slice is fed to the forks at
one time, they simply retract
before traveling their usual
"feeding" distanee. Just how
much hay goes into each slice
is decided by the farmer when
he adjusts the forks.
The result of years of plan-
ning and field testing, the ma-
chine brings to average -size
farms greater baling capacity in
the small baler class. It can
drop its bales to the side or
rear, or send them sliding back
a chute for direct loading.
And, by a simple adjustment,
Mr. Jermyn says, it can spit out
its bales iri lengths • anywhere
between one foot and 4A feet.
The farmer can choose for him-
self the length he likes best to
handle. '
The dealer says the new baler
treats the hay so gently that
most of the protein -filled leaves
so important to livestock diet
now go into the bale, they're not
lost in the' field. And in legume
hay, about three -fourth of the
protein •content is in the leaves.
PTO drive has both' a combina-
tion slip clutch and an overrun-
ning clutch. The slip clutch is
mspring loaded and no adjust-
ent is required. This ensures:
'slipping' if an .obstruction is en-
countered in the:crop or if the
load becomes excessive. Shock
and overload on gears is reduced
for safer operation.
The air-cooled engine on the
t engine drive starts with a wheel
instead of a crank. eliminating
kick -back in starting, .
Harvest .Streamliner
The new 82 "Harvest Stream -
1 liner" combine is billed by Mas-
sey Barris as the "greatest va-
lue in our entire history." along,
with the larger 92, it :features
a new streamline body style..
MHF Boasts
Mild Action
Massey -Harris Ferguson Limi-
ted has introduced two new ma-
chines' so far this year—the No.
3 baler 'and the 82 and 92 com-
bines.
The haler features faster hand-
ling, coupled with a "gentle -
leaf" actibn which retains leaves,
on legumes and grasses, saving
protein food value for livestock,
Though hay travels through
the No, 3 Baler at the fastest
rate ever, it flows in a smooth
even manner, being gently and
carefully fed into the baling
chamber where it is compressed
and baled. '
The hay makes only two turns
and•the need for' an auger is eli-
minated. This contributes to both
the high capacity.. and gentle -
leaf action.
The floating pick-up on the No.
3 baler gently lifts the windrow
into the cross feeding fingers,
feeds a continous flow • into the
baler to maintain uniform den-
sity. The hay then flows over
an enclosed table of special leaf-
guard- design. The leaves are not
lost.
Harry. Sherwood, Exeter dea-
ler, says the machine will turn
out up to 10 tons of baled hay
per hour. "The smooth flow of
hay, front pick-up to kick-off,
contributes to this high capa-
city," he continued. "Five off-
set feeding fingers move the hay
to the baling chamber where it
is quickly placed and compres-
sed—the bale is tied and reject-
ed, smoothly and quickly."
Bale size can be either 14x18x
37 or 14x18x31.
No. 3 baler is powered either
by PTO or engine drive. The
