Swamp Sick Boy
With Valentines
Eleven: year-old Billy Willard,
of 8 Warncliffe north, London, is
probably the only Londoner who
was. ever swamped in Valentine
•cards. The. postman brought
more than 1,000 in two days to
,the youngster who has been se-
raously til. .since August, Billy
only weighs 59 pounds and has
had two major glandular opera-
tions in connection with a blood
disease which doctors have not
definitely nanoed yet,
The deluge of mail stemmed
from Jack Bennett's show on
C,F.P.L, London. Billy named
three tunes in the quiz and won
$48. A women listener sent two
dollars more to make it -an even
half -hundred, and Jack Bennett
suggested that listeners send'
Valentine Day cards .to him. He
also 'received $35, in bills and
two • .dishfuls of pennies, dimes
and quarters, chocolates and a
big birthday cake. His birthday
is .dn, May.
Billy is• the eldest son of Mr.
and Mrs. Harold Willard. of Lon-
don, forniery of Hensall. His mo-
ther is the former Edith Parkins
of Hensall, and his grandfather
is Ezra Willard who resides at
Russeldale.
Mrs. M. Simpson
Active In Church
Passed away in South Huron
Hospital, Exeter, on . Monday
February 18, Mrs. Mary Simp-
son, 82 yearsof age. Mrs. Simp-
son who had been a patient in
the hospital for, over a year was
a well known Hensall resident
having lived here foe the greater
part of her life.
She was the former Mary
Laing and was born in Western
Canada and carne east as a
young girl where she made her
home with: her aunt and uncle,
the late Mr, and Mrs. James
Patersonof near Brucefield who
later took up residence in Hen-
sel!. Site was a member of St.
Pauls Anglican church and took
an active part in church organi-
zations in her earlier years.Her
husband the late James Simpson,
passed away some years ago.
Surviving are two brothers
David and William Laing, Win-
nipeg; Rachel (Mrs. William.
Crossman), Hazel Ridge, Mani-
toba, Isabella (Mrs. William
Ostherg) and Nettie, (Mrs. Jim
Simpson) of St. Vital, Manitoba,
Public service were held from
the Bonthron funeral home on
Wednesday conducted by Rev..
N. D. •Knox. Interment was .in
St. James Cemetery Clandeboye.

Mrs: Ed Fink was hostess at
her home Monday evening for
. the Arnold Circle meeting which
was chaired by the president
Mrs. A. Orr.
Worship period was in charge
of Mrs. Mary Hildebrandt, as-
sisted- by Miss Hannah Murray.
Mrs. Beverley Beaton presen-
ted the topic, and Mrs. Roy Bell
read excerpts from Glad Tidings
and Record', Members were asked
to leave gifts for -the hospital with
Mrs. Harry Hoy who is supply
secretary.,
Institute Hears
Group History
Mrs. Carl Payne gave the high-
lights of the founding of Women's,
Institutes . and their progress in
the sixty years since, at the Fe-
bruary meeting of Hensall Wo -
Men's Institute on Wednesday
evening in the Legion Hall. .
Members answered the roll
call by stating "what I like about
this community." A sing song
was enjoyed with Miss Greta
Lammie at the piano,
Men were special guests of
the group., There were 13 tables
of euchre in play and also tables
of crokinole. William Hyde, 93
Years Of age was the first prize
winner for the gentlemen and
Mrs. A. Foster was• ladies win -
net, Winners for creadeole were
Margaret Elgie and Mary Etta
Payne.
Hostesses were Mrs. Walker
Carlile and Mrs. Wet. Riehard-
eon. Arranging the program were
Mrs. W. Brown, Mrs, A, Orr,
Mrs. L. Chapman arid Mrs. A.
Aleatander. Mts. A. Shiri'ay pre -
Sided sided for the evening.

been spending the past week

Detroit, returned home on Tues-
day of this week.
Miss. Margaret Mousseau un-
derwent an operation in Clinton
Hospital on Monday of this week.
Mrs.. Richard Taylor Jr., spent
the weekend with her niece and
nephew, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Oesch
and family in Paris,
Mrs. :Stewart McQueen under-
went an operation in Scott Me-
morial Hospital, Seaforth, on
Monday of this week, and at
date of writing was doing nice-
ly.
Mr. and Mrs. John Henderson
and family visited Sunday with
their son-in-law and daughter,
Mr, and Mrs. Keith Lindsay in
Thamesville.
Mr. R. M. Peck who under-
went an .operation in Torontoon
Thursday returned home on Mon-
day. -
Mr. and Mrs, Glenn McNaugh-
ton and family of Toronto were
weekend visitors with the form-
er's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lorne
McNaughton.
Mr. and Mrs,. John Shepherd
and family of London visited
during the past week with the
former's parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Wm. Shepherd.
Miss Ruth Soldan of Hamil-
ton spent the weekend with her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Sol-
dan,
Mr. and Mrs. Guy Bedard and
children were weekend visitors
with Mrs. Bedard's parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Stewart Bell, Pauline
and Anne. ,
Mrs. J, Smillie left last week
for Florida where she intends
to spend the remainder of the
winter.
Cpl. Donald A. Orr of Tofino,
Vancouver Island, is spending
a furlough at the home of his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. Orr
prior to sailing for Germany in
March.

cepted a position as book-keeper
at W. G. Thompson and Sons
Milling Co. and commenced her

Shaddick.
The Misses Maja Roobol and
Brenda Wakell, nurses -in -train-
ing at. Victoria Hospital, . London,
spent a few days last week with
the former's parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Sint, Roobol.
An organizational meeting of
the Recreational Commission for
1957 was held in the town hall
when general plans in the in-
terests of recreation for the com-
munity were laid. Mrs. S. Ronnie
wet re-elected secretary -treas-
urer and Frank Ellwood chair-
man .for 1957.
Mr. John Passmore attended
the diain9nd wedding anniver-
sary of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley
Campbell on Sunday in London,.

Hensall branch of the Cana-
dian Legion entertained mem-
bers of the Legion Ladies Auxi-
liary to a turkey banquet ser-
ved at the New Commercial Ho-
tel Monday evening. Seventy-
five sat down to dinner. This
was followed with an evening of
cards and dancing in the Legion
Hall. Winners of euchre were:
ladies, Mrs. Sani Dougall, Hen-
sall, A. McBride, Exeter; gents,
Philip McKenzie and Lawrence

Observe "Thinking Day"
In observance of their "Think-
ing Day," which holds a special
significance for them this year
because it is the centenary of the
birth of their. leader Lord Baden-
Powell, the local Girl Guide As-
sociation and Brownies worship-
ped with the congregation at the
United Church Sunday morning.
Rev. C. D. Daniel spoke on the
theme. 'The five wise and fool-
ish Virgins."
Kick From Cow
Injures Farmer
Gordon Munn, Hensall district
farmer, was taken by Bonthron
ambulance to Clinton hospital
on Monday morning of this week
with injuries suffered when he
was kicked by a cow in his barn.
Gordon had taken the milking
machine off when the cow kicked
him and threw him to the ground
which stunned him •and when he
came to he managed to crawl to
the barn door and call for help,

His wife heard him and called
hospital revealed' a fractured
leg.
Dr. J. C. Goddard attended
the injured man.
Chiselhurst Group.
,Hears Missionary
Mrs. R. Boyce, vice president,
took the chair for the February
meeting of Chiselhurst Womens
Missionary Society, held on Tues-
day afternoon. Mrs. R. Kinsman
was pianist for the meeting. The
worship period was conducted
by Mrs. Earl Treffry, scripture
passages read by Mrs. Clarence
Coleman.
Guest speaker, Mr. Donald
Orth, missionary from Japan,
who is home on furlough, ad-
dressed the group, on the cus-
toms, and religion of the people.
He stated that •the Japanese
people once they get started in
religion continue on and on, and
said more missionaries are need-
ed.
A brief meeting of: the Woman's
Association was held.
Falls On Ice
Mrs. K, Meidinger was •admit-
ted to South Huron Hospital,
Exeter, on Wednesday. suffer-
ing from shock and bruises when
she had' the misfortune to fall
and slip on some ice near her
Bole on her way up town to do
some shopping. Jack Hyde found
her lying on the ice and gave
assistance and called Dr. J, C.
Goddard who took her to hos-
pital. X-rays were taken to de -
ermine injuries.
