Of Missions "The Japanese people are very quick to adopt new ideas, new. methods and even a new re- ligion," • said Dr, D. B. Orth, B.S.A.,! )3,D., at the Sunday eve- ning service in James St United Chtirch. Dr.. Orth told the history of Christian activity in Japan. Fol- lowing the "Great Sleep," a period of 300 years, during which Christianity was forbidden and there were more Christian mar- tyrs than in all Christian history. Admiral Perry opened the way for missions in Japan and by 1880 all official edicts against Chris- tianity were removed. Mission- aries returned to the urban areas. Since the war the Japanese have felt that the rural areas should be Christianized. Dr. Orth mentioned two leaders in this' work. Dr. Kagawa and Dr. Alfred Stone, a native of this district, who lost his life in a typhoon in Japan three years ago, Dr. Orth Showed pictures to il- lustrate his talk.!He is a gradu- ate of O.A.C. at Guelph, major- ing in animal husbandry. In 1951 he graduated from Emmanuel College Toronto, and was or- dained' to the ministry of the United Church of Canada. He went to Japan as an evan- •gelistic Missionary in 1952, He had just finished a year of fur- ther study at Cornell University and"is lecturing in Huron County before returning to his duties in Jaoan in late summer, Dr, Orth was introduced to ,the congregation by Rev, Alex Rap- son. • Wuerth's Can Save • You Money WHY SHOP AROUND?
