This prevalent eagerness for intellectual

Many physicians of great experience are

injury has been done both to the body and

Of the mature or essence of mind we are

8A.aCITT.-Oo the fourth of July Mr.
Alexander Wintemute, while attemptiogto
swim across the Niagara river to an isand
called Strawberry Island, when about half
way, lost his strength and was drowned.-
Mr. Wintemute was about forty-two years
of age, and the youngest of five brothers,
residing in the vicinity of tVaterloo, Canada,
opposite Brack Roek. He leaves a wife.-
There 11 an incident ennnected with the
orm
fanee of free and perfect respiration, or ditat'i of 11r. W. that re mite affecting, as
. sound ets'e of the eyo and tiro ear for ,t exi,h,ts t!:e strong attachment and pecu-
seeing and bearing. In consequence of ;far sagacity of his dop. This faithful ani -
this intimate connexion between the mind mal had accompanied Mr- W. in the water,
and body, we cannot doubt that mental
labour calls into action some organ, Ind
that, of contued for a great length of time,
it will fatigue, and may injuim this organ,
and ua6t it for ns accustomed duties, just as
too much excitement of the beast or
stomach -will io'ure these organa, and de-
range the circulation and digestion.
1f thews observations are true, (and that
they are i thick can be abundantly proved,)
every person tell perceive, that an cultivat-
ing the mental powers of children, we
sbon'd be less anxious to ascertain how
rapidly lad to bow great au extent they
may be developed, than how much the de-
licate organ or organs by which the nand
acts may be excited without ialury to the
body or the mind.
Very dfferent views, I am aware, respect -
tog the education of children, prevail in thiscountry. In most schools, the important'
of a sound body, and a well-developed or-
ganization to the production of correct and
long continued mental action has been
overlooked; and both parents and teacher,
bate chiefly laboured to discover the gnick-
est methods of developing the minds of mental
children, without once thinking that ental
labour itself eould injure any part of the
corporeal system.
But in commencing the inquiry u to the
influence which the cultivation of the mind
has upon the health of the body. it will be
tree y first to ascertain what part or
organ of the human system r. called into
ethers by mental labour, ted then to trace
the effect which this labour has upon that
part of the system, and upon other organs
of the body, at different period' of life.
