Fourthly, -Independent of astronomical
or geological causes, 1 have adduced one
good reason that may account for the origin
of Cholera in Indio, in the. year 1817, on
the foregoing principle.. I bare proved
that, in the great majority of cases, eight
ort of every ten, the producing cause of
Cholera has been food, in an electronega-
tive state, which almost puts it beyond
doubt. considering the occult nature of the
eseantial element, fMet such food produced
Cholera its all cases. I have demonstrated
that the cause uuplicateJ is fully competent
according to natural laic, 10 produce the
effect ; and in conclusion, 1 have proved by
the most indubitable evidence, that the
cause indentified neurally did exist in pro-
portion to the effect observed. That coupe

l'hat Cholera hat often Leen ascribed to
the cause which I have indcntified, is a
a fact of which I have given.several illus -
trauma ; but the statement has been ae
often and aa flatly contradicted ; becanes
the chain of natural relations subsisting bi-
tween the disease and the cause presumptive
was not made manifest. This desideratum
1 have endeavoured to aBAply : with what
sucrose, let each detcrnti qa for himself.
In conclusion, it is phasing to observe
that those remedies wh'ch are now the
most generally recognised a., being the
most beneficial in the treatment of Cholera,
are just the medicines indicated by the
electric theory, viz., those of a positively
electric character -hydro -carbons and the
alkaloids. Amongst these may be men-
tioned, camphor, petroleum, er Barbados's
tar, turpentine, veratria, quinine, alum. kc.
1 would also recommend strychnine, n•ph•
tha, and creaeole. - Substances that have a
powerful affinity for oxygen, or those that
are very combustible, seems to be the best.
in the first stage, I would recommend an
emetic of ipicac. A gentle cathartic may
also be ncceesary. If the attack is not
very severe, the cure may be completed
with a few dose. of the compound tincture
of camphor. Where the symptoms are
more urgent, the selection of the appropri-
oto remedies will depend upon the judge-
ment of the enlightened physician, who
ought to bo in attendance as soon as possi-
ble after the first symptoms make their ap-
pearance.
" Prevention is better than cure." - And
the means of prevention that I would re-
commend, are cleanlinese, temperance -
both in eating and drinking ; friction to the
skin daily ; light flannels next the body ;
exercise, when the air is dry and pure.-
When the weather is damp, oven though
sultry, it would be advisable'lrkieep up a
coal fire in sitting rooms, in connection
with bed -room., kc. Avoid the use of
acids, unripe fruit, or uncooked vegetables ;
avoid everything like tainted meat, or but-
termilk ; avoid physical and mental exhaue-
tien. Uee, principally, a fnrnaccous diet,
with the soup of good animal food, rather
than the meat itself, unless yon haven coed
deal of bodily exercise. Use good bread
and butter. If you drink much water, it
ought to be filtered through charcoal. A
little clean powdered charcoal in the water
that you drink will be a very good substi-
tute, or, if it ib preferred, a few dao, s of the
compound tincture of lavender will have a
good effect. By attending to these re-
quirements -by doing what wo can to ai:e-
viate the miseries of those who have not
the means of providing for themselves -by
maintaining a clear conscience, and a con-
tented mind, we will be best prepared to
meet Cholera, or any other evil with which
Divine Providence may bo pleased to vir.t

Concluded.
Again we have in the Lancet of .,the 8th
November, the following from J. C. Atkin -
non, Eeq. •-" I am desirous, at the present
moment, of directing the attention of
scientific readers to a very interesting
phenomenon, more or less present, in the
collapsed stage of Cholera, which seems to
have hitherto escaped the observation of,
medical men, namely, animal electricity or
phesphoresccnco of the buman body. MY
(attention was first attracted to the subject
during the former visitation of that fearful
disease in the metropolis. It was indeed
singular to notice the quantity of electric
flutd that continually dtscharged itself on
the approach of any conducting body to the
skin of a patient labouring under the collap-
sed'atage. Streams of electricity, many of
them an inch and a half in length, could
bo resdily educted by the knuckle when
directed to any part of the body, as if it
were a charged Leyden jar, i may remark
the coincidence that, simultaneously with
the beat of the body passing off, the electri-
ci'y was evolved. I am therefore led to ask
the question -Aro not heat, electric and
galvanic fluids one and the same thing ?
Does not the passing off of both imponder-
able substances, at one and the same time,
strengthen this conclusion 1 Again, are
not the whole of what w3 call vital pheno-
mena, produced by the electro -galvanic
magnetic matter and motions i And do we
not find that those vital phenomena are con-
tinually affected by the relative state of the
surrounding electric medium i To what
can we attribute the present fluctuating
condition of the Barometer if not to this i"
If the reader will remember the variable
results obtained by Gay Lusane, in expert -
muting on the chemical affinity of the
seine substances, with the electrometer,
e nder what he conceived to be the same
conditions, at different times, the occult
nature of the cause of Cholera, or the ec
centricity of its character, will not excite
much wonder.
In the same periodical Dr. Smillie re-
marks, " that on those days on which the
disease was most,pr.valent, the electric con-
dition of the atmosphere was in u highly
disturbed state ; and the various instru-
ments used to exhibit the phenomena of
e:ectricity failed to be depended on, by rea-
son of :be paucity and the irregularity of
the electric distribution in surrounding na-
ture. The magnet also exhibited s dimi-
nution of seventy per cent. of its usual pow-
er.
During the prevalence of Cholera in St.
Peteraburgh last year, we had authentic
report. testifying to the same general fact.
One report says, that a magnet which would
lender ordinary cirewnstances, metals forty
pounds weight, was not capable of sustain -
rag more than four or five pounds when the
disease was at its height.
The London Lancet -for March last, enn-
tains a report from the Regretter General,
in which the electrical state of the atmos-
phere and the nnmher of Cholera uses
weekly, are stated in tabular form ; by
whtch it appears, that the decrease of elec-
tricity in the atmosphere maintained • pro-
perties to the iocrease of the disease, and
when the uses amounted to a certain num.
her, no activations of electricity could be
obtained. What snooper evidence could
any person req vire 1
is drawing this .abject to a conchal( n, 1
will beady direct the attention of the read-
er to the points which i have endeavoured
to elodidate :-
I commenced with the simplest form of
capillary attraction, and proved by good
authority that the peaasge of ',quids throtrgh
porous substances, whether they be physi-
cal, vgetable, or mime), Is due to the same

MRET1NG iN FAVOR OF PERMA-
NENT AND UNIVERSAL PEACE.
The Friends of the cause of Permanent
and Univereal Peace, in this city, gathered
to the number of fifty or sixty persons in the
Recbabits Hall, on the Evening of the 28th
ultimo. It was the first meeting of the
kind ever attempted in Montreal.
Mr. Benjamin was called to the Chair,
and Mr. N. S. Frosts acted as Sectary.
The following resolutions were unani-
mously wised: -
Resolved, That the system of war, regard-
ed in a light simply economic, is to be con-
devnned, inasmuch as it weaken. the Indite -
trial resources ofa country by withdrawing
a large proportion of able bodied men from
its productive labor, and in addition to chi.,
imposes taxes on the productive laborers
for their support. That it is farther to ho
condemned, beeanse it is disastrous to the
foci Il happiness of all classes of the people,
inasmuch as it invades the homes of all
classes, and sometimes by the force of its
barbarous laws, and sometimes by the fasci-
nation of its false glory, deprives those
homes of their most useful iwpports, and
their brightest ornament., frequently to
leave them dead on the battle field. And
because in the day of its triumph it com-
monly violates all social and domestic right.,
leaving WWear, miaery, and desolation to it.
t k. That 11 is farther and escially to
be ondemned because it is at vanance
en the benignant and reconcih g spirit
n religion, ion an
taught bythe

of the g
lip., and exemplified in the life of its Divine
Author.
Resobred, That the diC,renete and dis-
putes of Nations ought to be settled in the
name way as those individuals, namely; by
an appeal to ruasne and vanity, or to some
well di gas}ed and estabbi.hed law -by ne-
gntiation. rbritration, or a Congress of
Nation..
Resolved% That we sympathise with the
movement now going on in the civilised
world for the abolition of wax, and in favor
of sent and anivenal puce, and in
to testify our sympathy in this behalf,
we wow appoint a delegation, coesi.Ueg of
