During the Obit week or teu days
the vvalks in Goderich have been in
a most dangerous state to life and.
limb, the ice being likened to a plate
of glass. The dying Council have
been derelict in their duty in not doing
as they did last' winter by spreading
coarse sand on all dangerous points.
Many severe falls have occurred, and
probably one- individual doctor bill
Would amount to a great deal more
than all the expense the town would.
be at in taking the precaution against..
The quality of the town water has
been discussed by almost every citizen,
who does it, and the time has arrived.
when some action must be taken to
secure a more clean supply. N man
should be elected to the Council who.
will not pledge himself to an improve-
ment of the town water. The intake
pipe most be extended to clear water
or good fliterer installed. It is a.
question whether the town can tiompel
water ts,kers to pay for what they gets

feeling that Mr,Robert McLean should
be elected reeve by acclamation. For
many years he has served the town

should prove popular and successful.

There may be other aspirants for
County Council honors, such a popu-

plenty of good material for both Town

should if possible improve on the old

will doubtless give our citizens a choice
to select from.

Goderich wants more electric power.
It may seem all right to say thatit
cannot he supplied, but saying so does
not make it a fact. Front time to
time a great deal has been said about
"overloading." and so on; but we can-
not escape the fact that it is the duty
of the Council to grapple with the
power question, There should not
only he more power, but there should
he a night and day service, and power
supplied to all who desire it. The
Jackson Manufacturing Company is a
co -sae in point well worth consideratian.
With our own inadequate equipment
the town is spending $2,000 in hard
cash tri give electrie power to a new
Induetry, whets an additional few
thointand dollars would equip our pre-
sent plant for all purporres. This mat-
ter is worthy of careful consideration.

on each side of the stage, more sail-
cloth was used to conceal the dress-
ing rooms and the 'flies.' As for scen-
ery, the carpenters built wooden
frames, and these were covered with
sails stretched taut, on which the
painters put beautiful trees and houses
and whatever else was necessary to
complete the pletures. The footlights
wore electric bulbs, shaded from the
audience by tin reflectors.
"The costumes and makeup required
as much ingenuity. The organizers
had procured a good many feminine
garments ashore several weeks ahead
of time, but all the smaller accessories
were made aboard ship. The false
beards were constructed of strands of
rope, which were carefully picked out
and then shaped up by a fellow who
had a talent for that sort of work. Of
the same material be wove elaborate
wigs. Burnt cork did the work of
darkening' eyebrows, and face palate
were mixed in the fo'c'sle -probably
from ordinary house paints. for I guess
the sailors weren't particular about
their complexions.
"The 'leading woman' was a amnoth
cbeeked Swede, and he was rigged up
'regardless.' I can tell you he was a
stunner. The flounces and Lace and
ribbons he wore would have filled a
trunk. The only trouble about him
was his voice, but we grew used to
that before the euti of the first act;
what It lucked in feminine delicacy it
atoned for in quality. He gave us all
the popular songs of a year before in a
rich tenor and added a few composed
for the occasion, mostly hits at the of-
ficers, who took good naturedly all the
jokes at their expense. There was a
fair plot to the piece.
"The music, rendered by an orches-
tra of twenty pieces, had been another
subject for careful preparation. There
were a few instruments ou board, and
these wero supplemented by some
bought by subscriptions from the offi-
cers, upon whom the men had called
for all the cash they needed. The extra
horns and drums and stringed pieces
were secured at a port wo visited a
week previously, and the players had
been practicing, often to the annoy-
ance of those who bad to remain near
the fo'c'sle, every night since their
equipment was completed.
"Ah, it was a fine shows There we
were, a lonesome lot of devils, who

In the House of Commons on Dec.

a tribute to the Police Magistrate of
Toronto that must meet with the ap-
protest of every citizen of Canada who
sets a high standard for the adminis-

"the most admirable Court in Canada;
equal ut the Supreme Court," and
when met with laughter and applause,
he said : " I repeat it with all reepeet

spect to the Police Magistrate of Tor.
Ms. Maclean did not exceed the
limits of reasonable praise when he
used these phrases regarding Colonel

a judge on tho Bends in Canada who
makeira moreearnest and intelligent

than tbe Police Magistrate of the city

template his methods when we have
eminenti jurists In every Province of
the Dominion splitting hairs over

regard for the guilt of the criminal or
for the jostle° of the case.
Canada has had reason in the past
to boast of the quality of its courts.

been Instances when the failure of

TILE OTHER BUM
Sarnia, Dec, 17.-Tlae arrival here of
two members of the Golspie's crew,
Joseph Monaghan and Amos Warwick,
has shed ttdditional light en the cir-
cumstances attending the wreck of
that steamer. There were eighteen
people in the crew, and the supply of
provisions was very scant. Tho cap-
tain and five men remained with the
ship, sheltered by a deserted wood-
cutter's hut, while the balance of the
party, in command of Mate McLeod,
took the lifeboat and set out for Mich-
ipicoten Harbor.
On Wednesday the boat was aban-
doned, and the party camped on the
shore preparatory to starting throngh
the woods. According to the story of
Monaghan and Warwick, the five
burn and Macdonald, were in a very
discontented frame of mind. and re-
fused to proceed with the rent of the
party on Thursday morning. They
were urged by the mate to proceed
with the rest of the crew, but declared
they prefered to take their chance
with the boat. They were given an
axe, a lantern end Houle provisions,
and left where they were. They were
afterwards found by a rescue party
sent out by the mate, and brought to
the hospital at the Soo.
Captain Bault and his companions
remained by the ship until (Sunday,
when they were informed that the
owners had decided to abandon the
vessel to the underwriters.
There is a strong feeling amongst
vesselmen here against the Mackay%
of Hamilton. Ihe owners of the lost
steamer. Copies of the telegrams which
passed between them and (htptain
Bault have been published, and
show that to the captain's first tele-
gram asking for a tug the owners re-
plied that the tug was busy :n the Soo
River, and netted if the men mild not
he taken out overland. This was im-
poitalble in the temperature prevailing,
as it would have meant carrying the
injured 00 miles by stage, n.nd it was
decided to wait for tbe underwriters'
tug, which reached Michipicoten ten
days after the wreck, with Oapt. Sin-
clair aboard, and removed the suffer•
ers to the Soo.
It is believed that earlier attent ion
would have saved the men's feet.
