Kingston, May 2. --There is an active ng of movement fcity and the preservation of he numerous landmarks of history. Two societies are at work on these lines. One is called the Civic Improvement Society, whose object is the cleaning of the streets and yards and l=ettering the sanitary condition. The other so- ciety is designed the Historical So- ciety. whose object is the discovery and preservation of the historical places and objects within and adjacent to the city limits. Toward these ends public meetings have en held at which illustrated lectures were given, descriptive of the known historical places and of the men who were recog- nized leaders in the early settlement of the district Prizes were given for the best essays dealing with these, Seed» have been distributed to all agreeing to plabt them where the pro- duct can he seen frolfl the street. Later it is the intention to award prices for thebest kept front windows and lawns. All elasales are taking an interest in the movement, and before the summer k fat advanced' it la ex- pected that the eityre beauty will he greatly enitstriceli. There Is teem and steak for a Civic GOSE IT MAKES QUICK SALES. Stores that describe their goods in the newspapers make sales quicker than those who do not ad- Ivertise. People go to the adyertised store with the impression of the goods so thoroughly stamped on their minds that they know just what they want, what it costs and all about it. If they go to the stores that do not advertise, they have the clerk take down everything from the shelves, and tell them all about it, taking two or three times the time. Advertising is the greatest help the salesmen have. Advertise- ments placed in the columns of ITHE STAR go into thousands of hotnes every week. PRESBYTERIAN FOREIGN MISSIONS. Last week the Foreign Mission com- mittee of the Presbyterian church in Canada held a two days ssesaion in Toronto, at which important business was transacted. The reports submit- ted state that the present is the flood - tide of missionary opportunity in China. In Honan remarkable pro- gress was noted in both religious and educational work. The church has now 1053 converts in Ronan, and the society is confronted with the neces- sity of providing a medical mission- ary, three ladies and two pastors to that field. The committee found it necessary to reduce the estimate for the central India field by 30 per cent. GODERICH DISTRICT MEE'T'ING.
