says was "forced to earn her own
living." To them his name and the
sequel of his•story may be of interest.
but to the rest of the world he is but
one of so many instances, each atra-
gedy.
' In every profession, in", the Legisla-
tures and Parliament, and inN.all the
trades and occupations, again and
again the same story is told. Bright
young men, highly strung, finely or-
ganized -often too high and too fine
for the pace they struck -are thrown
out of the ranks of the world's workers,
lose their plaoes, and are cast up with
the driftwood and the wreckage.
Were there no moral ruin and no
hereafter with its loss, the economic
waste caused by the drink and drunk-
enness is enough to give us pause.
Thousands who should be producers
are paupers and parasites, and thou-
sands more are heavily handicapped
in brain and nerves and working force.
There is not a great business in this or
any other city that is not a loser in
ways the counting -house can-
not estitnate, and there are few fami-
lies that have not some home -picture
turned to the wall.
The story. of Charley points two
morals. One is the old total -abstinence
warning that needs, now as in the
past, emphatic and persistent itera-
tion. The otner is the burden and
curse of the treating habit. The only
sure and safe course for any young
man, and the one that is becoming it
condition of employment in many
lines of business, is total abstinence.
"If I never drink intoxicating liquors
I will never get drunk" is sound in
logic and safe in practice.
nut Charley contracted the drink
habit in his student days. When he
became a man things went against
him, and his nerves "needed a etimu-.
lante" Ile quit drinking. He took the
• oure." But nerves and brain and
blood were all against him, Worst of
all were his "friends." The `treating
habit was his undoing time add again.
It is always Charley's undoing. He
meets it on the street, at the hotel, in
the club. "Come, let's have a drink!"
The descent back to the Avernus of
old habit is•easy and swift. The man -
there are hundreds of them hereabout

Clinton.
SAD NEWEL -Last summer Mr. John
Oook came to Clinton from England,
leaving his wife there, as she was to
follow him later on. On Wednesday
he received the sad intelligence that
she had - suddenly died. She had
ben around visiting friends and bid-
ding them farewell, when she was ta-
ken ill. She was a young woman of
about 85 years of age, and leaves no
family.
DEATH or Mfrs. Cann. -The rela-
tives and friends of Mrs. Orae were
not only deeply grieved but shocked
on Tuesday evening of last week to re-
ceive a telegram from Middle Church,
Man., announcing her death, arid stat-
ing that the body would be brought
home for interment. They had not
the slightest intimation of her illness.
'Miss Phaemae Oree arrived in Clinton
with the body on Friday. The Indian
Institute in. which she and her dough;
ter were engaged was destroyed by fire
a few weeks ago,and she then took up
her residence in the home oftheSuper-
intendent,her daughter being tempora-
rily transferred with the Indian chil-
dren to another institute some 200
miles away. Mrs. Oree 1s the second
eldest daughter of William Cook, of
Goderieh township, and has been a
resident of Clinton for many years,
where ebe was held in tyle very high-
est estoem. Her daughter Phaemae
was employed as ono of the teachers
in the Middle Church Indian Institute,
and about two years.ago . she went
there on a visit, afterwards accepting
'a position therein. She leaves two
sons, Robert and Lock, and two daugh-
ters, and has three brothers living in
this vicinity; also three married sis-
ters in various places. Elbe was a de-
yoted member of 8t. Paul's church.
