A correspondent, who describes him-
self as a ethorough-going Protestant,"
strongly endorses in The Mooreal
Star, the vigorous pastoral of Arch-
bishop Bruchesi against the treating
stem. This is a matter regarding
which a practical Christian 'union
Should not be difficult. The religious
leaders of the community` are a unit
against so mischievous a practic' e, and
they can join forces with the best
heart possible.
1.1 there is any modern social prac-
tice more stupid . than the treating
system, it would be heed to give it a
name. Two gentlemen meet. Neither
of them is thirsty. Neither of them
would think of taking a dpink just
then if they had not met. But merely
because they have met they try to an-
ticipate each other in en invitation
to go somewhere and "have., se -
Both would probably be the better
-particularly if it happens to be in
the Middle of the dity--without the
"something." Sometimes they would
be the better for the money which
pays -for the "something." Yet sociel
compulsion makes them swallow whal,
they do not want, from a glass of
whose cleanliness they are doubtful,
amidst surroundings- which are dis-
pleesing.
Once upon a time Mr. George I1.
Ilam, of the 0. •P. R. tried to intro-
duce a reform by inviting a couple of
acquaintances of his to "come in and
have a necktie" at a gentleman's fur-
nishing eatablishment, instead of al-
ways lining up at a bar for the inevi-
table thirstless drink. But his friends
fell inte the Spirit of the reform too
eagerly, They went jovially in and
selected neckties worth more taut% tit%
reformer bad about his person, with
the result that this particular anti -
treating movement fell through right
there.
But an Anti -Treating Leegue,which
should endeavor to establish the prin-
ciple that it was no more necessary
for a man to take a glass of liver
which he did not want, just because be
had met a friend, than it is incumbent
upon him to cart home a ten -pound
parcel of sugar for the same reason,
would make for social sanity. If a
wants a drink, let him buy it precise-
ly as he has to do when he wants coal.
But there is no reason why' he should
compel another man,who has juet bad
a drink, to take a second' one with
him. He might as well hail an ac-
quaintance whom he meets coming
Out of it restaurant, 'and insist upon
his turning back to eat another dinner
merely to ahoy: good comradeship.

There are other sides to the ques-
tion. • The treating habit is a menace
to the sobriety of some people. There
are good men who would- Ilde sober
lives if it were not for the insistence of
an army of friends that they show their
sociability by drinking with therd,and
the result is that they either become
the saddest of life's failures -a drunk-
ard -or they must careftillyeitile them-
selves from the society oftheir Mende.
Melly a noble resolution to be hereafter
a decent husband and a, good citizen
has been wrecked by a careless invita-
tion to "have something," and the mo-
ral cowardice which ftecepte it. Ile that

Help us to say "Thy will be done."
Her voice always defended right;
To tho good caulie hor hand she'd lend,
She entered In with all hor might.
And done her part right to the end.
No more with us her welcome voice
In hymns and psalms shall swell,

In loving sympathy we placed
Sweet scented flowers upon her bier
To show our love and kind regard
We had for Inc who was so dear.
ButBella, rloar, wo would not recall her

Sorrow now can 00 OC befall her,
Nor bitter grief known hero below,
By Godo mercy nhe was ready
When the sudden nrunitionn came.
And sho Row from earth to Heaven
Feeling nought of fear and shame.
We could natio() believe our senses
When they told us she was detul,

Told us she bad really Bed.
Her loved husband sadly mourns her,
She who shared his Joys and pain;
Life is lonely now without hor
But he known in Heaven they'll moot again.

Bereft of a fond mother'a love,

'As far as 1 can see, the prospects

" And," IA int i°the assign-

the capacity for generation of power by
the Credit River. An expert hydrau-
lic engineer has been engaged, who
will make an estimate of the assets
which can be counted on front this
Source.
"OonsequentV settlement cannot he

years to straighten U 1'10 affairs of
the Farnters' Loan, which went into
liquidation some years ago, and the
business of the York Loan is In a
much more complicated condition
than that of the former company."

„There are those who say we shall
not have any ice this season worth

their prophecies. In the decade ending
with April, 1002, there were many
years when ice could not he cut until
the end of February, and several times
the cutting was not throligh until
near the end of March, and there are
those who think history may repeat
itself in the winter of 1006.

Concerning Fault Finding.
Don't find fault unless it is absolutely
necessary.
On every occasion where ,there la no
reasonable hopes of doing good by
fault-finding, seal your lips as with a
bar of iron.
Always postpone fault-finding until
there has been time for consideration.
Do not speak at the moment the fault
has been committed.
Never go into the kitchen to find
fault with the maid. Send for her to
come to you, being careful not to
choose a time when her work will he
interrupted.
Good-natured, kindly fault-finding
administered when the mind is free to
receive it, ma,y do good. Irritable
expressions of displeasure, never; and
moderate and just reproof, if tactless
and 111 -applied, is almost as useless,
Three times out of four fault-finding
Is merely On expression of impatience,
and the only good it does is to relieve
the irritable feeling calmed by the stu-
pidity of those in contact with whom
we are thrOWIlh • -- -
Be patient. Perfection is not a trait
of the human race aitil words spoken
in anger and impatience are invariably
words of iniustice.
AMONG THE CHURCHES. '
Rev. Dr. McLean, whose resignation
is noted in a report of the Presbptery
meeting in another column, has been
pascor of St. Andrew's church, Blyth,
for forty yaers, lacking a few months.
It was his first and only charge and
the congregation was never more
prosperous and its pastor more beloved
than at the present time. But, recog-
nizing that his physical powers ace
not now what they once wore and de-
serving a well earned respite from the
more active duties of his profession,
Dr. McLean tendered his resignation,
to take effect after the General As-
sembly in ,lune when the applkation
will be made to have him placed on
the superannuated list. He has also
been clerk of the Huron Preetiptei y
for 36 years and a most painstaking
and efficient °Ricer he has been.

lsr Sanatoria "more judiciously

CANADIAN OPINION
DR. R. W! BRUCE SMI±H, In-
spector of Public Charities, Pro-
vince of Ontario. Official Report:
"I was specially plensed with
the attention paid to conduct the
institution carefully and economi-
cally. The patients I found cheer-
ful, happy and evidentiy well looked
after by those in charge. I found
particular attention is paid to pro-
vide nourishing dietary, carefully
prepared, and the quality of the food
served was excellent. This hospi-
tal depends for its maintenance
largely upon the voluntary contri-
buhons of the public."
FOREIGN OPINION
DR. H. L RUSSELL, President
of the Advisory Board of the
Wisconsin State Sanatorium
"Wo have Just recently returned
from our eastern trip, in which we
had an opportunity of inspecting
practjcally all the sanatoria Ut the
east that are designed for the treat-
ment of tuberculosis. I am very
glad to be able to write you that the
very favorable impressions that we
received at Gravenhurst have con-
tinued with us after this round trip.
We have found no place in our
travels in which money seems to
have been expended more Judiciously
and economical], than in connection
with the two institutions that are
under the control of the National
Sanitarium Association."
