HOLD FAMILY RE-UNION
The eleventh Goo<l - Zurbrigg fam
ily reunion was held July fst. at the
farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank ........■........f Bowman, four mjles east of Listowel,
on Highway No, 86, The weather was.
ideal for the day,
There were about 180 present, with
some coming from as far away as Al
berta, Sask., Detroit and other places.
The oldest lady present was Mrs.
John Stockfish, of Preston.
The oldest man present was Mr,
Levi Good, of Belgrave, Those who
travelled the greatest distance were
Rev, and Mrs. Carl Zurbrigg and
family, from Drumheller, Alberta.
A moment of silence was observed
for those who passed away during the
past year.
Speeches were given by Rev. Carl
Zurbrigg and Mr. Nelson Good. Homer*
Zurbrigg spoke to the gathering about
the Zurbrigg family tree.
The Zurbrigg family are descend
ants of Anthony Zur Briggee, ofFrei-
digen, Switzerland, who left Switzer
land in 1836 with his wife and family
of six children and settled where New
Hamburg is now located.
In an interesting letter to members
of the family, an outline of his trip
from Switzerland is given, telling of
a two-week trek from his native
country to Le Havre, France, and of.
a 48-day voyage from Le Havre to
New York City. ,
It was customary in those days for
passengers to carry their own pro
visions, but the party was so long on
the water that these supplies ran out
and everyone became dependent upon
reserves stored by the boat owners.
Exhorbitant prices were charged, and
the belief gre>v that the trip was being
prolonged to swell the profits from
these provisions. In desperation the
women banded themselves together
and informed the captain that they
would have him thrown overboard if
he" didn’t make port within a certain
number of days. The next morning
following this ultimatum they sighted
land.
The election of officers resulted as
follows: President, Earl Zurbrigg,
Listowel; vice-president, Franklin
Bowman, Listowel; secretary, WaTren
Zurbrigg, Gorrie; treasurer, Cecil Mc
Court, Atwood. A table committee and
a sports .committee was also elected;
There were races and games for
the younger people while the older
ones enjoyed visiting.
Rain Still Needed
In Huron County
Rain is still badly needed, because
of the hot, dry weather the harvesting
'of spring grains is two or three weeks
earlier, reports G. W. Montgomery,
agricultural representative. Practical
ly all of the wheat is now cut in the
county with much of it being thresh- a 4ed or combined. Many farmers in the
south end of the county have com
pleted the cutting of oats, barley and
mixed grain. Wheat and barley are
being delivered to the elevators and
moisture content of wheat has been
as low as 11.7% with none as yet
above 13% moisture. The biggest pea
pack in the history of the county,
which started June 17th was complet
ed on July 15th. Growers harvested on
the average of one and one-half tons
of peas per acre and in some cases
the yield was up to three tons per
acre.
AIR CONDITIONING
MIXED BLESSING
FOR FEET—EXPERT
Air conditioning,—a great summer1
boon to modern man-cun play hob
with your feet, according to a noted
foot specialist.
He points out that feet, like the rest
of you, feel wonderful in an
conditioned room, but the effect on
your- feet when you go out into th\
heat is more drastic than on most
other parts of the body.
The reason for this is simple. Feet
normally swell during hot weather—
and the sudden swelling caused by a .
rapid shift from air-conditioned room
to the city street may cause painful
discomfort from blisters, corns and
callouses if your footgear isn’t right.
One way of avoiding this problem
is to make sure that summer shoe®
are roomy—many persons find that
buying warm weather shoes on&
half-size larger than their regular
shoes keep them comfortable.
