John L, Stafford was appointed chairman and James Robinson, secre­ tary-treasurer, Topics are of interest to all farmers and it is hoped that they will accept the invitation to at­ tend the meetings to be held on the following dates, February 8, 15, 17, 22 and 24th in the Gorrie Community Hall at 1,30 p.m. The Guild of St. Martha The regular meeting of the Guild of St. Martha of St. Stephen’s church, was held at the home of Mrs. Wilmer Nuhn. Meeting opened with the Lords’ prayer led by the president, Mrs. Bill Bennett. Minutes of last meeting were read by the secretary, Mrs. Wm. Aus­ tin. Items of business were discussed, chiefly ways of raising money for the work of the church. Gilkinsou opened her home on Thursday afternPOh for the Feb­ ruary meeting of* the W, A. of St. Stephen’s Church. The work of the afternoon was for the coming bazaar on March 19th. The president, Mrs. Harry King was in charge of business when plans were made for the St. Pat­ rick’s hot dinner. The devotional 'exercises were open­ ed with the Member’s prayer and the Lord’s prayer repeated in unison and a New Years’ prayer offered by the president,. Theme for the meeting was "Light” and answers to the roll call fbrought many Bible verses on the sub­ ject. Mrs. L. Sanderson read the Scrip­ ture. New Year greetings from the Diocesan president, Mrs. Agnes Cal- Yler were read from the Bulletin, The life story of the Rev, Jorgelina Loz- Ada, of Buenos Aires, Argentina, who prepared the service for this year’s World,Day of Prayer was read from the Living Message. Mrs, Gordon Underwood read a paper prepared by Mrs. T. Vittie on “Light”’. Mrs. J. H. King assisted the hostess in serving refreshments. Hockey In the Intermediate series a game was played on Monday, night, January 31, at Ripley with the Ripley team, when the score was Ripley 9, Gorrie 2. The Kurtzville Bees and the Gorrie Bantams met in the Gorrie Arena Friday night. The score was 10-2 favor of Gorrie. An exhibition game was played Gorrie Bantams in the Belmore Arena with Belmore on Saturday afternoon, when the Gorrie Bantams were again Winners. The score being Gorrie 4, Belmore 2. Eastern Willing Workers Meet The Eastern Willing Workers met at the home of Mrs. T. L. Mclnnes on Monday afternoon. Mrs. Ewart Whit­ field and Mrs. E. J. Farrish had charge of the program and a very in­ teresting paper was given on the New Year. Final plans were made for the Valentine supper to he held in the church hall. A dainty lunch was serv­ ed by the committee and the hostess. W.M.S. Fee Tea The Fee Tea. of the Women’s Mis­ sionary Society was held at the par­ sonage on Thursday evening. Mrs. K. Hueston gave the call to worship and a hymn was sung. A poem, “God’s Dream” was read by Mrs. Hueston. Mrs. Alex Taylor read the Scripture. Mrs. Glad Edgar led in prayer, Mrs. M. MacNaughton was the guest speaker and chose as her sub­ ject "Light” saying as the days leng­ then at this time of year they stress more light. Nothing prevents God’s light shining in dark places. The W.M.S. workers are ambassadors for Christ and we have-God’s Holy Book as a light unto our path. Mrs. Mac- Naughton was presented with a gift in appreciation of her splendid ad­ dress. The Rev. W. J. V. Buchanan conducted the installation of officers. In answer to the roll call, the mem­ bers paid their fees. Mrs. Buchanan, Mrs. A. Taylor and Mrs. Irving Toner were appointed a committee to meet with ladies from the other churches to arrange for the World Day of Prayer service to be held this year in the United Church on February 25th. A dainty lunch was served and a social time enjoyed.- Newlyweds Honored At a large gathering in the com­ munity hall on Tuesday evening, Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Stephens (nee Edith Timm) were presented with a lazy- boy chair and a gift of money. Mr. Robert Gathers made the presentation and Mr. Geo. Hayden read an address. Dancing was enjoyed with piano and violin music provided by local talent. Personals Miss Velma Ballagh of Belmore, and Miss Etta Reis, Fordwich, stud­ ents at Teachers' College, Stratford, are practice teaching this week at the Gorrie Public School. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Ferguson attend­ ed the “At Home” on Friday evening at * Stratford Teachers’ College. Mr. and Mrs. Elgin Mclnnes and sons, of Toronto, spent the week-end with the former’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. L. Mclnnes. \ The Brotherhood of Anglican Lay­ men of the Gorrie, Wroxeter and Ford­ wich churches will hold their Feb­ ruary meeting on Friday evening in the L.O.L. hall, it will be “Ladies’ Night.” Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Easton are re­ turning this week to their home in Parry Sound, after spending the last three weeks with Mr. and Mrs. Glad. Edgar. Mrs. Albert Dustow spent a couple of days last week visiting her sister, Mrs. A. Neill of Woodstock, who re­ turned home with her and is visiting in Gorrie. ’Mr. and Mrs. Everett Sparling, of Newmarket, spent a few days with Mrs. Harry Ferguson and other rela­ tives. Mrs. M. McCi^ery suffered a heart attack last Thursday morning. Miss Etta Burns and Mr. Tom Edgar have also been confined to bed. We are glad to say all are showing improve­ ment. Miss Grace Edgar, of Hamilton, spent the week-end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Murray Edgar. Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Steckley and Patsy, of Brighton, spent the week­ end with Mr. aiid Mrs. Einier Downey. Mr Mrs. on in by United Church Mission Band Meets The Mission Band met on February 8, with 32 members and 2 visitors pre­ sent, The meeting opened by singing “Faith of .Our Fathers” followed by prayer by Lynn Stuckey. Helen Ann Armstrong gave the treasurer's report. The offering was taken up by Russell Robinson and Billie Kerr, the offertory prayer was given by Jane Salter. Readings were given by Hilda Tiffin, the Peace sec­ retary and Julie Cruikshapk, the tem­ perance secretary. Mrs. Hamilton gave the Scripture reading, Matt. 6: 28-36 andxPsalm 100. and a hymn was sung. Patsy Purdon favoured with a piano solo. Birthday greetings were sung to Brenda Conron and Hilda Tiffin. Mrs. Salter read a chapter from the Mis­ sion Band Study book. The meeting closed by repeating the Lord’s Prayer in unsion. .
