In the discussion on,’The W ingham Advance-Times, Wednesday, December 22, 1954 Page Eleven this, figures were quoted which show ed that about 50% of rural taxes goes toward education. In connection With health, Mrs. Weir’s suggestion was that if rural women wish, they can have the services of Victorian Order of Nurses made available in rural communities at a low cost. Reports from the counties were received and discussed, Emphasis was placed on the service given to farm ers by the Federation of Agriculture. It is, and always has been, the aim and also the achievement of the Fed eration to assist and protect farmers in marketing their products to reason able advantage. Without this farmers have no security nor stability in their industry. It was noted too, that the social and cultural side of farm life depends a great deal on the fin ancial prosperity of the farmer, Mrs. Weir recommended’ that we farm women should educate ourselves in consumer buying of foods. Officers elected for 1955 are as fol lows: President, Mrs. "merson Dess- ler, R. 1, Elmira; vice-president, Mrs, L. D. Taylor, Fergus; sec.-treas., Mrs. J. Scott Davidson, R 1, Britton; press sec., Mrs. O. G. Anderson, Wingham. Mrs. Weir, who has served on the women’s committee of O.F.A. for the past seven years has given a great deal of time and effort to the work and Mrs. Lloyd Taylor of Huron County voiced the appreciation of all present to Mrs. Weir for the excel lent contribution she has made at county, zone and provincial levels. Mrs. Weir automatically retires this year and it is our hope that she will continue her interest in the future of this important farm organization. year’s developments at O.F.A. level. As chairman, Mrs, Weir offered some good suggestions for interest and action amongst the women in the zone for the coming year. As a result of a recent interview with the min ister of education, Mrs. Weir sug gested that an investigation by the women into the cost of education in the local areas might reveal some startling information, which if follow ed up could be used to the advantage Twenty-one farm women represent ing Huron, Wellington, Waterloo, Brant and Perth Counties met in Stratford for the annual meeting of Zone 2 of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture. Three other counties in the zone are Oxford, Bruce and Grey. Mrs, George Weir, of Burford, chair man of the zone and also chairman of the Women's Committee of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, presided and reported on some of the L1 „i X t and all, we wish a Season bright as ’the Stat of Christmas morn. LOVELL McGUlRt District Dealer AT YOUR DOMINION STORE WINGHAM Traffic Fatalities Down in November November is the seventh month of 1954 in which a reduction in deaths due to motor vehicle accidents has been recorded in Ontario. Eighty-nine people, according to preliminary fig ures, were fatally injured during the month, as compared with 93 in Nov ember, 1953. It also represents an im provement over the same month of 1952 and 1951, when there were 97 and 94 lives lost in traffic accidents, re spectively. Motor vehicle registration at 1,465,- 000 has increased more than 6% over 1953 and more than 13% over 1952. At 18, there were 9 fewer passeng ers in vehicles fatally injured this November than last year. Pedestrian victims, however, increased from 29 in November 1953 to 39 this year. Collisions between vehicles' took 24 lives, 14 drivers and 10 passengers. Single vehicle accidents involving col lisions with fixed objects or vehicles leaving the road, accounted for 23 victims, 15 drivers and 8 passengers. Pre-school age pedestrian victims decreased in number from five to one during the month as compared with the same month last year, but child ren of elementary school age as vic tims increased from four to 10. The number of pedestrian fatalities invol ving people of 65 years or over was down from 12 in 1953 to eight in Nov ember of this year. There were 14 pedestrians between' the ages of 36 and 64 years fatally injured. The final ten-day period of the year has been in the past the most danger ous and safety during the season de mands greatly increased care and at tention by all who walk or drive.
