PROGRESSIVE EDUCATION
TOPIC AT WOMEN’S
INSTITUTE MEETING
At a meeting of the Women’s
stitute on Thursday, Miss Isabel
Speirs, teacher in Bluevale School
was the guest speaker. Her topic was
’‘Education.” Among many interest
ing things she told the members was
that the system in the schools is. call
ed ‘‘progressive Education” the 3 B’s
of yesteryear “Reading, Writing and
Arithmetic” is now changed to “Right,
Respect and Responsibility,”
She stressed the visual methods' of
teaching, sightseeing, travel and also
television. Her subject was of great
interest to the members and she im
pressed everyone by her youthful en
thusiasm and her fluency. She con
cluded her talk by telling of a trip
she took last Easter by air from
New York to Bermuda, describing the
Island. It’s masses of lovely flowers,
narrow roads, few beaches and fine
hotels.
The Institute decided to hold at
least one euchre party in the Com
munity Hall before Christmas.
A social hour was enjoyed following
the meeting. Mrs, Horton, the hostess,
was assisted by Mrs. H. Robertson,
Mrs. Carl Johnston and Mrs. Bert
Garniss.
W. I. Offer Help
At the regular meeting of the Wo
men’s Institute on Thursday, Novem
ber 18th, a motion was passed that
the Institute would assist the com
munity Hall Board in any way .they
could to make improvements in the Hall. '
The Hall is an important public
building in this community. It is used
extensively and many of us wonder
how we could get along without it,
however it needs decorating and im
provements to make it more efficient,
especially for serving food.
The committee was< appointed to
meet with the Hall board to find out
how best the Institute can help in
this project.
