A display of fireworks brought each evening's entertainment to a close. Members of the Howick Lions Club and Howick Legion are to be congrat­ ulated on their never -failing effort to give the people of this district good entertainment. A great deal of work and planning went into arrangements and comment is that the 1954 frolic was the best yet. Boys Enjoy Camp Thirty-three young boys from this district are enjoying the lake breezes at Camp Kitchagami this week where they joined a group from.Listowel and district. This annual holiday is ar­ ranged for them by Howick Lions Club and three leaders from this dis­ trict went along to take care of the boys. Ken Edgar is in charge of water front activities, Campbell Brown, nat­ ure study and Ronny Higgins, cabin leader. Boys attending are Ricky Irwin, Ronny Mitchell, James and David Sanderson, Alex Strong, Bob Temple­ man, Larry Snell, Gerald Gerger, John Schaefer, Larry McDermitt, David and G,erald Penner, Donald and Paul Mc­ Kee, Bill and Paul Higgins, Paul Stat- ia, Alex Smith, Angus Smith, Murray MacLean, Peter Doig, Bert Pocaluyko, Bill and Peter Keil, Davy Edgar, Barry Grainger, Douglas and George Knight, Fred Irwin, Wayne Johnston, Barry Johnston. Sunday was visitors’ day at camp- and a number of the parents spent the day with their sons. Former Wroxeter Resident Old friends will regret to learn of the death of Alvin Hemphill of Hen- sall, who was a native of Wroxeter village and a brother of the late T. G. Hemphill. Mr. Hemphill has been in failing health for twenty years and for the past few years was an invalid. His wife, two sons and a daughter survive. Funeral services were held on Thursday. Mrs. T. G. Hemphill and Mr. Jim Allen attended. Extend Sympathy Deepest sympathy is extended to Mr. Alvin Moffat, whose mother died in Toronto last week. Mr. and Mrs. Moffat attended funeral services on Thursday. Personals Miss Lucelle White, Toronto, spent the week-end with her parents here. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Montgomery, Toronto, who were married on Monday of last week, July 26th. Mrs. Montgomery was the former Mabie Ross Allen. Mr. Mont­ gomery is a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Montgomery, Fordwich. They will reside in Toronto. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Gold and Bobby, also Mr. and Mrs. Harris Gold, and David, all of Toronto, were week­ end visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Burke. Week-end guests of Mr. and Mrs. "Wilfred Brown were Mr. and Mrs. Bill Fiddes and Miss Diane Munro, all of Toronto, also Mr. Fred McCarten, of Hamilton. Mr. and Mrs. Dean Gibson, of Ex­ eter, spent the week-end with Mrs. W. G. Gibson. Donald Sanderson, of Rosetown, Saskatchewan, and Elaine Sanderson, Wroxeter South, spent last week with their aunt, Mrs. William Hart. Ruth Barlow, Toronto, spent last week with her aunt, Mrs. Ruth Mac­ Donald and other relatives. Mrs. Edward Stewart, Detroit, is a visitor with her aunt, Mrs. Nellie Sanderson. Mrs. Stewart was oalled owing to the serious illness of her aunt, who we are glad to report is showing slight improvement. Mr. and Mrs. James Sanderson also Mrs. Ken Edgar and family, spent Sunday at Camp Kitchagami. Mrs. H. H. Mercer, Markdale,' and Miss Elsie Conn, Toronto, who have been holidaying at Port Elgin, also spent the day at Camp and returned with the Sanderson family for a short holi­ day. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Baird, of Brucefield, were Sunday guests of Mrs. D. S. MacNaughton. Mr. and Mrs. Al Schott, of Cleve­ land, are visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Munro. Holmes Listowel MEW'S OP GORRIE Many Attend Miller Reunion In Gorrie Park on Monday The annual Miller reunion was held in Gorrie Community Park on August 2nd. with 65 in, attendance from Min­ den, Blyth, Lucknow, Toronto, Isling­ ton, Mitchell, Wingfaam, Brussels and the surrounding district. Following the dinner, served in the pavillion, the business session was con­ ducted by the president, Mrs. Mary Wearring, Wroxeter, The officers fqr 1955 ark.: President, Leonard Ruttan, Gorrie; sec.-treas., Miss Bessie Mc­ Pherson, Islington; invitation com­ mittee, Mrs. Fred McPherson and Miss Nellie Ruttan, Toronto; lunch comm., Mrs. Carson Watson, Brussels, and Mrs. Bob Findlay, Lucknow, It was decided to have the “Kith and Kin” booklet, which had been dis­ continued for the past three years, edited again. It was decided to hold the next reunion on the afternoon of Sunday, July 18th, 1955, in the Gorrie park, Games and contests with prizes were enjoyed during the afternoon. Follow­ ing this a. picnic supper was served before dispersing to the several homes. Celebrates Birthday On Tuesday, July 27th, Mr. James Shera celebrated his 84th birthday with members of his family at home for the occasion. They are Mr. Vic. Shera and Mrs. Shera of Moorefield, Mr. Emerson Shera and Mrs. Shera, of Wingham, Mrs. Lloyd Woods and Mr. .Woods of .Kitchener, and their baby daughter. There was a beautifully de­ corated birthday cake. Mr. Shera, who has been able to carry on work in his blacksmith shop until the last six weeks, is not enjoy­ ing his usual good health. We join with his many friends in wishing him good health and many happy birth­ days. Groups Picnic in Park There was perfect picnic weather for the two large picnics, in the Gorrie Community park last week. On Tues­ day, over ninety Anglicans attended from the parish of Gorrie, Fordwich and Wroxeter. On Wednesday there was a Com­ munity picnic. Winners in some of the contests were: tying men’s neckties, Mrs. John Brown, Mrs. Bower Far- rish; holding most clothes pegs in one hand, Feme Cook, Mrs. Lionel John­ ston; nail driving contest, Mrs. Tom Edgar, Mrs. Geo. Brown. There were races and amusements for the child­ ren. Anglican Church No service will be held in St. Step­ hens church for the next three Sun­ days, August 8th, 15th and 22nd. On Aug. 29th Archdeacon Mills will be here for Communion service. Invited to Gathering A special, invitation is extended to Women’s Institute members, 4-H Home Garden Club girls,- their mothers and club leaders to attend a gathering in Cranbrook Community Centre at 9.30 a.m. on Friday, August 20th. „ Personals_ Mrs. Geo. Anglican Congress Meets August 4=13 This summer the U. S. will welcome to its shores bishops, priests, laymen and women from every continent of the world for the first gathering of the Anglican Communion to be held outside the British Isles. The Anglican Congress will bring together in Minneapolis, Minn., more than six hundred official delegates and several times that number of visi­ tors from the fifteen Churches of the Anglican Communion. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss questions involving “The Call to God and the Mission of the Angli­ can Communion.” The ten days of the Congress from August 4 to August 13 will be taken up with special ad­ dressees, discussions, and summary re­ ports on the vocation, worship, mes­ sage, and work of the Anglican Com­ munion, as well as with special ser­ vices, meetings and dinners. Prominent Leaders Among the distinguished church leaders who will take a prominent part in the proceedings are the Most Rev. and Rt. Hon. Geoffrey Francis Fisher, Archbishop of Canterbury; the Rt. Rev. Henry Knox Sherrill, Presiding Bishop of the Protestant, Episcopal Church; the Most Rev. Mic­ hael H. Yashiro, Presiding Bishop of the Church in Japan, the Most Rev. A. N. Mukerjee, Metropolitan of the Church of India, Pakistan, Burma, and Ceylon, and the Most Rev. Walter F. Barfoot, Primate of the Church of England in Canada. While the Anglican Congress is not a legislative body, its convening at this time reflects the growing desire on the part of the various branches of the Anglican Communion to have a means of expressing their corhmon voice, particularly on the critical is­ sues facing the world today. Preliminary preparations for the Congress have been in the hands of the Rt. Rev. Walter H. Gray, Bishop of Connecticut, and local arrange­ ments have been supervised by the Rt. Rev. Stephen E, Keeler, Bishop of the host Diocese of Minnesota. King and Harold, spent Sunday and Monday in Toronto, Miss Agnes Law- son returned with them to Gorrie.
