Grey and Bruce, and was conduc tor on the first train that ran into Southampton. He remained, in that capacity for many years, his trip be ing from Southampton to Hamilton. The story is told and vouched for 'ey his bosom friend, James Dundas, baggageman on the same train, that when. the latter was about to be mar ried, he took his friend into his con fidence that at 4 am he was to he married quietly in St. Baud's Angli can. Church. It was to be a strictly quiet affair, with no witnesses. It would have been too good a joke to overtook, so at the hour of the wedd ing the fire alarm was suddenly $ sounded on the town bell.. Inquirers | were toformed that St. Paul’s Church | was the scene of the conflagration, -to:h the result that the sacred edifice |was jammed to the doors. John and j Jimmy continued warm friends, but I toe later never fully forgave John '.for the 'trick played on him. * Bridal couples were given special The pride of his life was the posses sion of a Hamilton watch, After his retirement he daily vzent to the station to get the exact time as It was flashed over the telegraph hues at 11 a.m. friends took delight In inquiring of him the correct time. One day at the Wingham post office half a dozen citizens were gathered, including Mr. Quirk. Then one of them asked for the right time. All of them compared their watches with his until the last one in the group said, “My watch is ex actly—*”. Quick as a flash came the old conductor’s response, "You must have a Hamilton railway watch”, That was what this particular citizen had. John Quirk was an honorary life member of Northern Light Lodge, A.F. & AM., Kincardine, and also of St Lawrence Lodge of Southampton. He retired from service in 1905, fol lowing 40 years as a conductor. It will be remembered that Mr. Quirk had a son who was the fastest 100 yards man in America. A deputation consisting of J. A. Morton and George McKay were ap pointed by the Railway and County Town committee to go to Toronto and interview the attorney-general as to the prospects of Wingham being made a county town.—News item 1389. -says WeM like to join with. you in rebiirmshing some iver WINGHAM ANTENNA ENGINEERING s -Sh. ** ,'CWOII'CCaO't k _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ • Been Coming A lot of water has run under the bridge since 1891 when Geo.
