Sunday School Pupils Receive Attendance Awards At the Sunday morning service in the Gorrie United Church awards were given to Sunday School pupils for attendance, Mrs. Glad. Edgar read the names and the Rev. W. J. V. Buchanan pre­ sented the pins to the following: Certificate and first year pins, Ruth Ann Hueston, Donald Galbraith, Jim­ mie Hyndman. Honored for Faithful Service At a recent meeting of the Sunday School teachers of the Gorrie United Church Mr. Hectoi' Hamilton was hon­ ored with an address and a beauti­ ful book “Leaves of Gold" was pre­ sented to him in appreciation of his faithful service as secretary of Sunday School for many years, Hockey Two hockey games were played week with the Gorrie team scoring high each time. South Friendship Circle the last score was on Thurs- Ethel 2. the The January meeting of the South Friendship Circle of the Gorrie W.A. met at the home of Mrs. Cliff Pyke on Monday evening. Mrs Allan Hyndman led in the de­ votional period, Mrs. Willard Peel, the convener, conducted the business. The group is haying a homemade ■ baking, sale in January in Hyndman’s office. It was decided to carry on with the sunshine bags, birthday box and trav­ elling basket. The February meeting Js to be held at the home of Mrs. Lorn Walker. Wm, Whitfield This community was shocked on Sunday morning to learn that Wil­ liam Whitfield had passed away in lis sleep at his home in Gorrie where he lived alone, He had suffered from a heart condition but was improved in health this winter. He was in his 81st year. Funeral service was held on Tues­ day afternoon at 2.30 p.m. at the Ed­ gar Funeral Home. Burial was in Brussels. Mr. Whitfield was a fine neighbor and will be missed. United Church W.A. The 'Eastern Willing Workers were in charge of the program for the W.A. meeting at the parsonage on Thursday afternoon. Mrs. W. Strong was leader, opening with the hymn, “Standing at the Portal", Mrs. E. J. Farrish read the Scripture and Mrs, W. J. V. Buchanan offered prayer. Mrs. Albert Heibein gave the theme, “New Year.” “What a Friend We Have in Jesus" was sung and the Rev. W. J. V. Buchanan conducted installation of officers and closed with prayer. Following the business period the meeting closed with the hymn, “Sun of My Soul” and the theme prayer. Lunch, was served by the hostess assisted by Mrs. W. C. King, Mrs. Gordon Edgar, Mrs. A. Toner and Mrs. Harry Fergu­ son. of Mr, apd Mrs. Wm. Campbell, of Fordwich, on Sunday. James Shcra spent several (lays last week with relatives in Moorefield and Drayton. On Friday evening, Mr, and Mrs* James Shera were guests at the 46th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs* John Fitch, held at the home of their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Montgomery, Belgrave. Marjorie Foster and Helen Hoffman conducted the wor­ ship service, Mrs. C. Carswell contin­ ued the study on worship with the girls, planning worship service suit­ able for festive seasons of the year, Mrs. H, Pollock concluded tire series of’mission studies. Plans were made to hold a skating party January 28th, The affiliation service to be held with the W.M.S. is to be held on February 1st, to which all the mothers are invited. Twenty- two girls answered the roll call, Lunch was served by Margaret Al­ len, Marlene Johnston, Marilyn Coop­ er, Helen Hoffman and Mary A$hly. The meeting closed with Taps. Progressive Euchre Nine tables of progressive euchre were in play on Tuesday night at the card party in the Fordwich Com­ munity Hall, sponsored by the hall board. The meeting opened in the usual manner with the Institute Ode and the Mary Stewart Collect. Mrs. Harold Doig led in devotions. The motto was taken by Mrs. Wray Cooper, “Health is wealth, let no one be a spendthrift". The roll call was a shower for Mrs. George Richards when members pre­ sented her with articles for the kitch­ en, A committee was named comprising of Mrs. Howard Harris, Mrs. Stan Bride and Mrs. Robert Gibson to procure definite information regard­ ing the new Tweedsmuir project. The members are to have free access to the coronation book recently received from the English Institute and it will be placed in the Fordwich ’library. Old record books will also be placed there. It was decided to hold the annual Institute concert and a committee of Mrs. 'Crosby Sothern, Mrs. Fred Ham­ bly and Mrs. William Campbell to be in charge. A donation of $10.00 was voted to the Junior Farmers towards painting the rural mail boxes. Mrs. Howard Harris, president, was ph<?sen as the delegate to the spring conference in Guelph. Mrs. Anson Demerling was appointed member of the public relations committee taking the place of Miss Margaret Spence, who recently moved to Listowel. Fam­ ily Night was planned for February 10th with a pot luck supper. The competition mat which won honors at Toronto, will be framed and hung in the community hall. Penny round-up bags were distributed among the members. The afternoon was spent quilting, also for the Richards family. The meeting closed with benedic­ tion, Lunch was served by Mrs. Har-, old JDoig, Mrs. W. A. Gibson, Mrs. Lome Siefert and Mrs. Clarence Cars­ well. Busy Quilting Ladies of this district were quilting last week. On Tuesday quilts were quilted for the Orange Orphanage at Richmond Hill. Ten pairs of pyjamas were included in the Indian Residential School at Card- ston, Alberta and Mohawk Institute at Brantford. These will be forwarded later by St. Stephen’s W.A. Personals Miss Beryl Bennett, of Kitchener, spent the week-end at her home here. Mr. and Mrs W. C. King spent last Wednesday in Toronto. Miss Pauline Heinmiller, Reg.N., re­ cently returned from Bermuda, is a guest this week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Walter King. Week-end visi­ tors at the same home were Donald Knale, of Toronto, and Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Gillen, of Harriston. Miss Annie Murray returned to her home last week after spending some time with relatives at Comber. Mrs. A. Hamilton has returned after spending several months with her sons in Toronto. Supper was served by the ladies, after which the business was conducted by the rector, Rev. D. H. Fuller. The meet­ ing opened with a hymn which was followed by prayer. Mr. Frank Gra­ ham, vestry clerk, read the minutes of last year’s meeting. Reports of the W.A., Little Helpers, Guild, the Sun­ day school were also given. The rector’s appointments and elec­ tion by the congregation for the en­ suing year were as follows: Rector’s warden, Art Forester; people’s ward­ en, Emmerson Ferguson; delegates to synod, John Gamble and Norman Tressider; alterate delegates to synod, Robert Allen and James Foster. The rector also appointed to the board of management, James Foster, Norman Tressider, Spence Brears, and John Gamble, while the congre­ gation elected Roy Simmons, William Sothern, Lloyd Jacques and Bruce Sothern. Auditors were Frank Graham and John Gamble and sidesmen for 1954 were Wellington Hargrave, Jack Fos­ ter, Lloyd Jacques and Frank Gra­ ham, Miss Margaret Spence, treasurer for the past four years resigned, having moved to Listowel where she will make her home. Miss Spence was asked to come forward and Miss Beatrice Wade read an address and on behalf of the congregation she was presented with an end table. The W.A. also gave her a vase. Miss Spence thanked all after which the meeting closed with prayer by Mr. Fuller. United Church Annual Meeting The annual meeting of the Ford­ wich United Church was held follow­ ing a pot luck supper served by the ladies in the church basement. The reports of the various church organizations were received and all showed a very successful year. There was a gain in membership of seven during the year. The total receipts amounted to $4,553.10 with the mis­ sionary and maintenance fund receiv­ ing $699, from the Fordwich charge. George Ashton and Royden Devitt were elected to the sessions for a four- year term, Elections for the stewards for a three-year term Were Jack Brown, Wray Cooper, Glen Johnston and Nor­ man Harding and for a one-year term Harold Doig* It Was decided to hold open house some time before spring at the par­ sonage to View it in consideration of repairs needed during the year.
