Indo-China Situation No Better
Washington — Japan responded to
President Roosevelt’s request for an
explanation of the massing of troops
in French Indo-China and its reply
m no* way relieved the gravity of the
acute Far Eastern crisis. In a 150-
word note, Tokyo said its forces are
in the Vichy colony as a precaution-
ary measure, induced by ; Chinese
troop movements across the border.
It said their presence there’ has the
approval of the Vichy Government.

King Michael In Italy?
Mexico City, — The newspaper Ex
celsior says that according to a “pos
itive source/’ King Michael of Ru
mania has been at Florence, Italy,
since late in November because of a
serious situation in his own Nazi-
dominated country. Michael’s father,
former King Carol, Who abdicated in
September, 1940, has been living in
a Mexico City suburb since last July.

Honey Plum Pudding
154 cups seedless raisins; 54 cup
citron; 54 cup dates; 1 cup pecans;
54 cup oatmeal (cooked); 54 cup bran;
1 cup honey; 54 cup currant jelly; 1
egg; % cup flour; 1 teaspoon nutmeg;
2 teaspoons, cinnamon; 1 teaspoon all
spice; 54 teaspoon soda,
Chop fruits and nuts coarsely;
dredge with 54 cup of the flour, Com"
bine oatmeal, bran, honey, jelly and
well-beaten egg. Mix. Sift together the
remainder of the flour and the nutmeg,
cinnamon, allspice and soda. Sift flour
mixture into egg mixture and beat
well. Stir in the dredged fruits and
nuts. Pour into three well greased
casseroles that hold one pint each.
Bake at 250 deg, F. for 254 hours,

. Washington,—Almost three months
after receiving orders to “shoot on
sight” in the Battle of the Atlantic,
the United States 'Navy cautiously
entered its first official claim that an
Axis submarine had been damaged by
an American naval vessel on the sea
lanes.
Bus Driver Goes on Trial
Guelph, — Magistrate Watt reserv
ed judgement in a charge of danger
ous driving against George T. Cripps,
of Toronto, who was owner and driv
er of a bus which collided with a
shunting freight train on a Toronto
highway C.P.R. level crossing just
outside Guelph, injuring 27 Toronto
people, two weeks ago.

Washington, t- President Roose
velt announced that lease-lend coffers
had been opened to Turkey, a far-
reaching diplomatic coup designed to
bar Hitler from a highroad to Suez,
Iran, Iraq and the oil-rich Russian
Caucasus.
Canada’s Coast Defences Ready
Ottawa, — On sea, land and in the
air Canada’s Pacific coast defences
are at the ready, prepared in these
days of crisis in the Orient for What
ever may develop. For three years the
Dominion has been building up its
Western defences. They cover a rug
ged coastal area from the Yukon to
the international boundary.
Eastern Mediterranean, declared that
the British Navy in co-operation with
the Royal Air-Force is destroying or
damaging more than 60 per cent of
all fresh supplies destined for Axis
troops in Libya.
Acquitted of Conspiracy Charge
1 Kitchener, — Harry Schust, 71,
former superintendent of the Kitchen

plant, was .acquitted by a general ses
sions jury of a charge of ^conspiring
to damage the plant The jury delib
erated 80 minutes. The charge invol
ved the insertion of brass plugs in the
steam lines of two water gas manu
facturing machines.
Election Too Late For Opening
Ottawa, — Senator Arthur Meighen
now has insufficient time to be elected
to the House of Commons before the
Parliament resumes January 21, and
will not be able to take over leader
ship of the Conservative group at that
time.

Victoria, — John Hart, designated
by Hon. T. D, Pattullo to succeed
him as premier, told the British Col
umbia Legislature it was his “inten
tion to invite leaders of both patties'*
in the Legislature to “join a war gov
ernment” C.C.F. Leader Harold
Winch today declined an offer.
Declared War on 3 Countries
London,. — Britain announced she
is declaring war oh Findland, Hun
gary and Rumania. The announce
ment by the Foreign Office followed
expiration of a Friday-midnight time
limit which Britain set for those three
countries to accede to a British de
mand that they cease fighting Russia.

Method: Mix together the syrup,
sugar, oil, salt, fruit and milk. Heat
slowly until the mixture blends. Cool
to room temperature. Add lemon juice
and beaten egg. Sift together flour
baking soda and baking powder. Mix
in wheat bran. Add dry ingredients
to fruit mixture and stir only enough
to wet the flour. Bake in greased loaf
pan lined with waxed paper. Ten min
utes before time of baking is com
pleted, brush well with melted butter.

for complete mobilization of Canadian
man power are taking form with part
icular consideration to a proposal to
.extend national war services machin
ery to meet in compulsory fashion the
needs of industry and agriculture in
addition to staffing the Reserve Army.
German Arrested in Erie
Dublin, — A man identified as a
German parachutist who landed in*
Eire in June, 1940, was arrested in
Dublin, He was booked as Hermann
Goertz. Police said he had -a German
soldier’s identiy card made out in
another name.

Christmas Candle Cakes ,
cups sifted cake flour
teaspoons double-acting baking
powder
teaspoon salt
tablespoons butter or other
shortening
cup sugar
egg, unbeaten
cup milk
teaspoon vanilla
Sift flour once, measure, add baking
powder and salt, and sift together
three times. Cream butter thoroughly,
add sugar gradually, and cream to
gether well. Add egg and beat very
thoroughly. Add flour, alternately with
milk, a small amount at a time, beat
ing after each addition until smooth.
Add vanilla. Turn into greased cup
cake pans, filling them % full. Bake
in moderate oven (375 degrees F.) 20
minutes, or until done. Makes 2 dozen
cup takes. Insert little tandleS* and
light just before serving. Cover with
cocoanut seven minute frosting.

cups moist, sweetened coconut
Combine egg whiles, sugar, water,
and corn syrup in top of double boil
er, boating with iotary egg beater un
til thoroughly mixed, Place over rap
idly boiling water, and cook 7 min
utes, or.until frosting will stand in
peaks, Remove from boiling water;
add vanilla and beat until thick en
ough to spread. Spread on cake,
sprinkling with eoeonnf whjlo frosting,
is still soft.

Cream shortening and sugar

. Sift dry ingredients and add to first
mixture alternately with the sour
cream.
Place in refrigerator and chill over
night
Roll a small part of the dough at a
time, cut and bake in a moderate oven,
(375 deg. F.) for about 10 minutes.
Yield: about 254 dozen large cook
ies.
Christmas Plum Pudding
One-half apple, chopped; 2 eggs,
well beaten; 54 cup figs, chopped; 54
cup citron, sliced; 54 cup suet, chop-
ped; Vs cup milk; 54 cup raisins; %
cup candied cherries, quartered; %
cup molasses; 2 cups sifted flour; %
cup currants; 1 tablespoon candied
orange peel, chopped; 54 cup almonds,
blanched and chopped; 2 teaspoons
baking powder; % teaspoon salt; 54
teaspoon soda; 54 teaspoon cinnamon;
54 teaspoon allspices; % teaspoon nut
meg; 2 wine glasses brandy.
Combine apple, suet, molasses, eggs,
and milk. Sift flour once; measure.
Mix % cup flour with fruit and nuts.
Combine remaining flour, baking
powder, salt, soda and spices and sift
again. Add to molasses mixture. Add
fruit and brandy. Turn into well-
greased molds, filling % full. Cover
tightly. Steam 3 hours. Serve hot with
Butterscotch Hard Sauce, or with a
sauce of straight brandy which has
‘been set aflame just as it is brought
to the table.
White Fruit Cake
One pound butter, 1 pound white
sugar, 1 pound raisins, 114 pounds of
flour (sifted), % pound citron peel,
54 pound almond nuts, 54 pound cher
ries, 9 eggs (beaten separately), 1 tea
spoon baking powder (sifted with
flour), grated juice and rind of on&
lemon.
Method: Cream sugar and butter;,
add beaten yolks, lemon, half of flour
half whites of eggs and beat welL
Then add remainder of eggs, flour and
citron.
Use candied cherries. This
keeps well.

(Without Meat)

apples
% lb. mixed peel
% lb. blanched almonds
1 lb. currants
1 lb. light brown, sugar
2 cups apple cider
54 teaspoon mace
% teaspoon cinnamon
1 wineglass fruit juice or
liquid
Boil the cider until it,is reduced tof
one-half. Chop the raisins, suet, ap
ples, peel and almonds. Add to the
cider the raisins, suet, apples, citron,,
currants and sugar, and cook slowly
for one hour. Then add the almonds,
spices, and fruit.
