J, R, Douglas will continue as manager and director of the school, Benson Straughan, is the new secretary-treas urer, succeeding Mr. Whyte, who held the dual post of president and secre tary-treasurer, but who remains as a director. This appoint ment will no doubt be a popular move as Mr. ■ Evans is well thought of by the ‘electors who have given him bumper support when his name ap peared on the ballot. Coun. Evans resigned as councillor, it being accepted on motion of Couns. Lloyd and VanWyck. His appoint ment as Reeve followed at once on motion of Couns. Wilkinson and a Johnson. The resignation of Coun. Discussion followed and it was finally agreed that the council appoint one of its present members .as reeve and hold nominations and election, if necessary, for two members of council rather than leave the vacancies to be filled by appointment in the New Year. Moved by Reeve Evans and Coun. Wilkinson that the nominations to fill the two vacancies of councilor be held on November- 24th and the elec tion if necessary-on December 1st. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Weir of Lon ASHFIELD The W. M. S. of Hackett’s United Church, met at the home of Mrs. Al bert Alton, Belfast, Tuesday after noon, with 20 ladies present. On Fri day afternoon we held our Red Cross meeting at Mrs. Alton’s and quilted two quilts. Ivfrs. McKim, and Mrs. Hornell, Lucknow, were present for the Red Cross meeting and brought samples of all kinds of knitted goods and were explained by Mrs. Me Kim,, and Mrs. Hornell had samples of blouses and 'other garments. A 10c tea and lunch was held afterwards. Miss Muriel Farrish, nurse from Stratford, spent the week-end with her mother, Mrs. Kenneth Farrish, 12th; concession. Mr. and Mrs. Dynes Campbell and. Mr. and Mrs. Herman Phillips spent Sunday with their uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Bird and cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Alister Bird, near Brussels. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Alton spent Thursday with their relatives near Exeter. - . Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Alton, Lon don, spent Friday with relatives here,, and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Alton ac companied them on their return trip- to London. Mrs. Wm. Blake, near Mafeking, is visiting with her daughter, Miss Bern- ideen Alton, and Mr. Blake Alton of Belfast. Found Old Paper When he was repairing a mirror for Mrs. Allan Ramsay of Morris, Mr. George Wraith of Victoria Street, found an old paper in the back of the mirrow. It Was a Mail and Empire dated October 20th, 1906. The' two most interesting ’articles contained in the issue were the Industrial Progress of Canada by Mr. E. S. Clouston, then vice-president and general manager of the Bank of Montreal and another an nouncing the raise to 6 per cent, of the discount rate by the Bank of Eng land. Alex underwent an operation for appendicitis recently. Mr. Grenville Vogan of St. Thomas, Mrs. Robert Ferguson and daughter of London, were recent visitors with their father, Mr. David Vogan and brother, Mr. Roy Vogan, Mrs. Vogan and family. Mrs. H. M. Cumming, Shirley and Billy, spent the week-end in Toronto with her parents, Mr. and iiMrs. Fraser. , Mr. and Mrs. Thomas McDonald spent the week-end at Oshawa attend ing the Wedding of a friend. The War Workers Auxiliary recent ly shipped a carton of goods to .the I.O.D.E. at Stratford, which contained 18 quilts, 5 pair pillow cases, 2 girls night dresses, 6 ladies night dresses, 16 girls dresses and 1 boys suit. Six boxes for Xmas were packed and sen£. to the soldiers from Molesworth, who are overseas, alsq 9 ditty bags packed and sent to sailors. Meetings are held every Tuesday afternoon in the United Church basement, where quilts are being quilted and other sewing done. ST.
