The second stars Ann Sothern, who is famous for her “Maisie” pictures. ’ WHITECHURCH (Mr. and Mrs. Durnin Phillips of St. Helens, spent Sunday with Mrs. A. Fox. Mr. Henry McGee and Gordon and Mr. Leask McGee and Jim, spent Sunday with Mr. Robert McGee in Victoria Hospital, London, and report that Mr. McGee is making a good recovery from his recent operation. Miss Lettie Fox, of Hamilton, is spending two weeks with her mother, here. Mr. and Mrs. Lavid Gibbs and family mavcd on Monday to Wing­ ham where Mr. Gibbs had secured work at the Foundry. Mr. Orville Tiffin and Mr. Jamieson Pettapiece have been busy this week shingling the south side of Mr. Amos Corneliu’s barn. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Clarke of Am- herstburg spent the week-end with her father, Mr. Robt. Carrick. Mr. Fred Lever of Toronto has been visiting with Mr. Charles Lever. 4 This community extends best wish­ es, to Mr. and Mrs. Athol Purdon, who were married on Saturday in Bloor St. United Church. Miss Susan Kilpatrick and the three daughters of Mr. and Mrs. John Kilpatrick of Lucknow have been quarantined at the home of. their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Rob- inson on account of the illness of their brother Keith, who is suffering from a mild attack of infantile paralysis. He has been making a good recovery. Mr. and Mrs. George Robinson of Port Burwell, Mr. and Mrs. Ross Rob­ inson of Tilsonburg and Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Robinson of Windsor were in this 'community on Saturday to attend the Robinson - Cameron wedding in Ashfield. Miss May Carrick, who has not been so well lately, was taken to Lon­ don Hospital one day last week, and Mr. and Mrs, Fred Clarke and Miss Susan Carrick visited with her there on Sunday. A Red Cross quilting was held at the home of Mrs. Gordon Elliott on Monday. Mrs. Jas. Laidlaw won the prize that had been^ contributed for the best crazy quilt block. The ladies quilted two quilts. Miss Olive Purdon and Mr. Ken­ neth Zinn spent Sunday at Elmira at the home of his sister. •Miss' Agnes Wilson Reg. N. of Cochrane, spent a week of holidays at Toronto and with her mother, Mrs. Jas. Wilson here. The three Presbyterian congrega­ tions of Langside, Calvin and White­ church met here last Wednesday night and with Mr. Jas. Laidlaw as chair­ man contributed an interesting pro­ gram from all three churches. The occasion was a farewell social even­ ing to their pastor, Rev. J.. Pollock and Mrs. Pollock, who are’ ‘moving this week to their home m Wingham, Wit& Mr.-Rbstier Mpffatt acting for the; Langsid^ people, a Bible and a book of Praise were presented to Mr. and Mrs. Pollock. With John McGee speaking for Calvin, a purse of money was presented to Mr, and Mrs. Pol­ lock and Mr. Fred Davidson repre­ senting the Whitechurch congrega­ tion a purse of money was also pre­ sented, while the ladies of the W.M.S. presented Mrs. Po.llock with a Life Membership Certificate to the W<M, S, Rev. and Mrs. Pollock thanked the people for their generous gifts and told of their heartfelt interest in the worlx of these congregations. Lunch was served and a social time enjoyed by all. The interest of all the community will follow Rev. and Mrs,. Pollock to their new home, and all hope for the continued health of Mr. Pollock. Induction services will be held in the Presbyterian church here Thurs­ day evening at 8 p.m. for Rev, A. H. Wilson, who comes form the Guelph Presbytery. Everyone in the com­ munity is cordially invited to attend this. meeting. The W. M. S. of the Presbyterian Church are holding their Autumn Thank-Offering meeting on October 8 at 8 p.m. and Miss Anderson, a re­ turned missionary from Formosa will be the special speaker for the evening. The regular Monday evening meet­ ing of the Y. P. U. of the United Church was in charge of Miss Muriel Watt, who gave the call to worship. Mrs. Jas. Falocner read the Scripture lesson, and Millan Moore was in char­ ge of the devotional period. Mildred Moore led in prayer. Rev. G. A. Bar­ nard gave a very interesting talk on the missionary work in the Pillipine Islands and Jie also closed the meet­ ing with prayer. Mildred McClena- ghan was appointed to attend the Lon­ don Convention being held this week end at St. Marys. Mrs. Jas. Falconer then read an address to Mr. and Mrs. Millan Moore, and Mr. Carman Far­ rier presented them with a purse of money as a remembrance from the people of the United Church. Mrs. Moore in thanking them, told of the pleasure she had always received from working in the church and commun­ ity. Mrs. Roy Patten of St. Georges, is spending a few days with her mother, Mrs. A. Fox. Mrs. J, A, Brandon spent a few days last week with friends in Blyth, Mrs, W. J. Skinner of London is the guest of Mrs. J. A. Brandon. ASHFIELD Miss Jean Nelson, Toronto and Jimmie Nelson, Duncan Farrish, Allen Culbert, Ronnie Hogan, Hamilton, spent the week-end at their respective homes here. Mr. and Ars. Jim Sherwood and family near Crewe, spent Sunday with his mother, Mrs. Sam Sherwood. The Hacketts United Church W. M. S. held their, .regular’ meeting at the home of Mrs. Adam Johnston, with a good turnout of ladies. There was one quilt quilted in the afternoon, Mrs. Erving Zinn presided over the meet­ ing. We excepted an invitation to the Dungannon W, iM. S, on Octobei" 10, Little Gwennie MacKay, Ripley is staying with her aunt, Mrs. Wilfred Hackett, while her mother, Mrs. Ken­ neth MacKay is in Kincardine hospital where she had an appendix operation lastvweek, Mr. and Mrs. George Lane and son Clifford, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Alton and sons Clayton and Alvin, attended the 75th anniversary of the United church at Port Albert. On Saturday at noon, the home of Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Cameron, 10 con., was a happy event, when their only daughter, Margaret Jean, became the bride of Mr. Mason Robinson, West Wawanosh, under an arch decorated with white bells and autumn flowers. Rev. Mr. G. Howse officiated. Close relatives of both were present. In the afternoon they left by motor on a trip up north. ' Hacketts United Church will hold their anniversary next Sunday, Oct­ ober 5, in the afternoon at 2.30, and BELGRAVE Impromptu Blackout This district suffered a blackout on Thursday night when hydro power was cut off, Power was off due to the heavy wind storm from the middle of the afternoon till noon on Friday. The rooms were very attractive with late summer flowers and about 60 ladies were en­ tertained. Mrs. J. L. Foster and Mrs. John McLeod presided at the tea table assisting were Mrs. C. White, Mrs. J. The pastor, Rev. J. S. Foster, was in charge and gave two inspiring ad­ dresses to large congregations. The choir under the leadership of Mr. G. A.
