Shearer, agricultural representative, who outlined the purpose of the meet­ ing and introduced the speakers. War­ den James Leiper was appointed chair­ man. Prof. Mason dealt with weed con­ trol methods in general farming prac­ tice. A general principle, he said, and the first to be considered, should be to force the crops so that there are so many good plants growing there is no room left for weeds. He then outlined several specific control methods. W. J. Stephen spoke on the subject of the Weed Control Act and demon­ strations of spraying. Mr. Williams spoke on killing weeds and brush by the use of chemicals. CLYDESDALE BREED­ ERS MEET JUNE 28 Field Day Will Be Held at Seaforth London Board Want Action The London Board of Education voted to instruct its solicitor to “make a demand” on the County Council for certain secondary school tuition fees,, and if they are not paid, to take action against the Middlesex body. The fees, it is understood, are for children from Byron Sanatorium and Westminster Hospital attending .school in London. ? -------- U.S. Protest Robin Moor Sinking Washington —. The United States lodged a vigorous protest with Ger­ many on the sinking of the Robin Moor, it was learned .authoritatively, citin/g evidence of survivors that the American vessel was torpedoed deli'b- 1 erately by a Nazi U-boat. The State Department’s note demanded restitu­ tion be made for the loss of American! life., and property—35 persons were* missing—and that assurances be given against repetition of the incident. An enthusiastic meeting of admirers of the Clydesdale breed of horses was held in the Council Chamber, Town Hall, Harriston, recently. The meet­ ing was under the supervision of Jno. Gilstorf of Mt. Forest, who is Vice- President of the Ontario Clydesdale Club. The purpose of the meeting was the organization of a field day for Western Ontario. Representatives were present from Bruce, Huron and Wellington. This field day has b'een held for the past two years on the farm of Donald Wilkinson, of Harriston, and has cre­ ated ;a -great deal- of interest. The meeting decided to hold the field day this year at Seaforth on June 28th. It is hoped to rotate the field day 'from year to year amongst the counties con-; cerued. The report on un­ completed Person-to-Person calls will be abolished, and the overtime charge on Person-to-Person calls will be re­ duced to the Station-to-Station Rate. Hitherto, the first three minutes of ov­ ertime on Person-to-Person calls have been charged at the higher Person-to- Person rate.
