Demands Waste on Liquor End
Expressing .wonder why the people
of Canada cannot challenge their Gov
ernment with the statement; “We will
give when you stop this waste,” Rev.
Dr. A. C. Archibald, Calgary, told the
delegates to the annual meeting of the
Baptist Convention of Ontario and
Quebec that 120,000,000 of dollars are
being wasted’annually for liquor while
the Government seeks money for its
war programs.
A meeting of weed inspectors of
Huron was held in the agricultural
board room, Clinton, Speakers includ
ed public school inspectors E. C. Bea-
com and James Kinkead, Prof. A. W.
Mason, O.A.C., Guelph, W. J. Steph
en, Toronto, and M. B. Williams, Oak
ville. The meeting was opened by J.
C. Shearer, agricultural representative,
who outlined the purpose of the meet
ing and introduced the speakers. War
den James Leiper was appointed chair
man.
Prof. Mason dealt with weed con
trol methods in general farming prac
tice. A general principle, he said, and
the first to be considered, should be
to force the crops so that there are so
many good plants growing there is no
room left for weeds. He then outlined
several specific control methods.
W. J. Stephen spoke on the subject
of the Weed Control Act and demon
strations of spraying. Mr. Williams
spoke on killing weeds and brush by
the use of chemicals.

Field Day Will Be Held at Seaforth
London Board Want Action
The London Board of Education
voted to instruct its solicitor to “make
a demand” on the County Council for
certain secondary school tuition fees,,
and if they are not paid, to take action
against the Middlesex body. The fees,
it is understood, are for children from
Byron Sanatorium and Westminster
Hospital attending .school in London.

U.S. Protest Robin Moor Sinking
Washington —. The United States
lodged a vigorous protest with Ger
many on the sinking of the Robin
Moor, it was learned .authoritatively,
citin/g evidence of survivors that the
American vessel was torpedoed deli'b-
1 erately by a Nazi U-boat. The State
Department’s note demanded restitu
tion be made for the loss of American!
life., and property—35 persons were*
missing—and that assurances be given
against repetition of the incident.
An enthusiastic meeting of admirers
of the Clydesdale breed of horses was
held in the Council Chamber, Town
Hall, Harriston, recently. The meet
ing was under the supervision of Jno.
Gilstorf of Mt. Forest, who is Vice-
President of the Ontario Clydesdale
Club. The purpose of the meeting was
the organization of a field day for
Western Ontario. Representatives
were present from Bruce, Huron and
Wellington.
This field day has b'een held for the
past two years on the farm of Donald
Wilkinson, of Harriston, and has cre
ated ;a -great deal- of interest. The
meeting decided to hold the field day
this year at Seaforth on June 28th. It
is hoped to rotate the field day 'from
year to year amongst the counties con-;
cerued.

King said the provinces should not
wait to be asked their views but they
should write to him at once if they
desire a conference as suggested

on Rt. Hon. R. B. Bennett in the
King’s birthday honors list. The honor
to the former Canadian prime minister
is the highest in a comparatively short
civilian list, which includes also the
appointment of Hon. Vincent Massey,
Canadian high, commissioner in the
United Kingdom, to the Privy Council.

Asked today concerning changes in
Long Distance Telephone Rates an
nounced in the United States and their
effect on rates in Canada Mr. W. G.
Hamilton, Manager of the Bell Tele
phone Company of Canada here, said.1
“Effective July 10 next, important
changes will be made in Long Dis
tance Rates here. The report on un
completed Person-to-Person calls will
be abolished, and the overtime charge
on Person-to-Person calls will be re
duced to the Station-to-Station Rate.
Hitherto, the first three minutes of ov
ertime on Person-to-Person calls have
been charged at the higher Person-to-
Person rate. In addition, rates on
calls to United States points will be
reduced to conform with reductions
announced there on calls to Canadian

No Appeals at Court of Revision
Council met on June 3rd at a Court
of Revision on the Assessment Roll,
with all members present excepting
Coun. Black. Having been duly con
stituted as a Court, the Clerk reported
that no appeals of any nature had been
received which speaks highly of the
satfaction that has been .given of late
by the local Assessor. On motion of
Ruddy and Beecroft, the'Court of Re
vision was then closed and the Assess
ment Roll was then adopted for the
