Duncan MacPherson A resident of Wingham for fifty years, Mrs. Duncan MacPherson died suddenly at her home, Minnie Street, on Thursday, May 22nd, in her 79th year. Mrs. MacPherson had not en­ joyed good health for some years but her passing came very suddenly about 10 a.-m., following a heart attack. She had had her breakfast as usual and a short time later passed on quietly. Born at Flora, the family moved to CarriAk Township where she was mar­ ried. Fifty years ago they moved to Wingham, Mr. MacPherson passing on 24 years ago, Sruviving are three daughters, Pearl, a teacher in North Toronto Collegiate; Olive and Metha, at home. No bro­ thers or sisters survive her, she being the last of the family, ( The funeral was held from her late residence on Saturday afternoon, the service being conducted by Rev. Ken­ neth MacLean, minister of St. And­ rew's Presbyterian Church, of which the deceased was a member. The pall­ bearers were: H, F. McGee, Jack Weir, Peter McDougal, W. A. Gal­ braith, J. A. Douglas Gill led in a sing-song. Motion pictures of Goderich Summer school were then shown. ’• The report of the nominating com­ mittee was brought in and-the follow­ ing officers were elected: Hon. Brook, Hensall;'President, j Alma Howell, Goderich; Vice Pres., Verna Barber, Goderich; Secretary, Sheldon Baxter, Benmiller; Committee conveners are, Miss Caroline Well­ wood, Wingham; Velma ' Finnegan, Nile; Harvey Bryans, Walton; and Rev. R. G. H'azlewood,' 'Benmiller. These officers were installed by the chairman of Huron Presbytery, Rev. F. Chandler, of Kippen. Among the resolutions brought in was one pro­ testing the remodelling of a building on the Blue Water Highway for a hotel . This building is situated be­ tween Port Albert and Sky Harbor air ports. The convention decided to send a protest to the government. A committee composed of Rev. R. G. .H'azlewood, Harvey McPhee, Fordyce Clark, and Carman Stevens,1 were ap­ pointed to investigate. Rev. A. J. MacKaye, of Victoria Street Church, Goderich, was theme speaker and gave a most inspiring message on the subject “Youth Part­ ners With Christ” Delegates were present from Bluevale, Wingham, Clinton, Seaforth, Goderich,, Brussels, Ashfield, Auburn, JBakes, Sliipka, Eb- enezer, Walton, Bayfield, Carlow, Ex­ eter, Holmesville, Londesboro and Brucefield. Miss Madeline Ritchie, of Toronto, spent the week-end with her mother, Mrs. Clara Ritchie, Mr. and Mrs, Carl Newton and son, of Toronto, also Sgt, R, G. Dane attended the District Annual East Huron Women’s Institutes Ethel Thursday. i Play Well Received On Thursday evening the play “Ad­ ventures of Grandpa”, presented, by the Wroxeter Dramatic Club fo,r the Gor­ rie Women’s Institute, and the dance after, was another successful event staged by this Institute. The play was indeed well presented, each player do­ ing equally well,, and brought forth peals of laughter from the filled house. Grandpa’s, as well ' as several other members’ of the cast, predicaments were very amusing, and for a night’s fun of clean amusement, this play fills the bill. Gorrie Orchestra supplied the music for the dance which followed. A very pleasant evening was spent at the home of Mrs. John P. McKib­ bon last week when the Goforth Aux­ iliary of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church met for their May meeting, with an attendance of thirty-two, The meeting opened with a hymn and the dedicatory prayer by Miss Sadie John­ ston. Mrs. Kenneth MacLean gave a paper on the Provincial Women’s Mis­ sionary Society annual meeting which was held recently in Brockville. Prin­ cess Alice, Countess of Athlone, was the guest speaker at that gathering and Mrs. MacLean had the pleasure of meeting het. A chapter of the study book was conducted by Misses Helen Miller and Ann Geddes, various members taking part in the discussion. The Scripture reading, 6th chapter of John, verses 35 to 58, was taken by Miss V. Mc­ Laughlin and Mrs. Wm. Kennedy of­ fered prayer. The meeting closed with a hymn and prayer after which a social half-hour was spent over the tea cups. Wingham Radio Air School Near Clinton A $900,000 radio air school is being constructed near Clinton on the farm of Norman Tyndall. Already the Pig­ gott Construction Company of Hamil­ ton arc on-the job making preparations to proceed with the work as quickly as possible. A short time ago rumors were afloat that a new air field would be built on this location, Teachers Name Officers District No. 3 of the Ontario efation of Women Teachers’ Associa­ tion held its annual meeting Saturday, May 17th. Officers elected were: President, Miss Helen Thompson, of Hanover; Vice Presidents, Miss Mar­ ion Moore, Durham and Miss Marlon MacDougall, Lucknow; Secretary, Miss Irene Curtis, Hanover. Fed- Mr. and Mrs. David Hardy, Miiss Clara and Mr, Douglas Smith, of Mt. Dennis, were week-end guests of Mr. and Mrs. Charles King and other friends in the commnuity. Mr. Archie Holiday, Toronto, spent the week-end with his mother, in town. Mr. Harold Edgar, Toronto, is spending a few days with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Edgar. Harold’s many friends will regret learning he is confined to his home through illness. O’Neil, former Rector of St. Ste­ phen’s Parish, will be glad to learn of his appointment as acting principal of Huron College, London. Mr. O’Neil, who left here in February, 1939 for r Clinton, will act as principal of the college until such time as the Colonial and Continental Church Society in England, which is trustee for Huron College, can meet to appoint a perm­ anent principal. On Friday night the farmers of the surrounding community met in the Township Hall here to organize under 'the auspices of the Agriculture'com- .mittee of Huron County Council. Reeve Gamble was in the chair and among the speakers were: Mr. S. Whitmore, McKillop; Mr. Scott, Sea* forth; Agric. Rep. Jas. Shearer, Clin­ ton, and others. Missionary Group Met ’ ’ The W.M.S. of the Presbyterian Church, Gorrie, held their May meet­ ing at the home of Mis. G. Mundell on Wednesday evening last, when nine of its members and three visitors were present. The president opened th meeting with a call to worship fol­ lowed by a hymn. Miss Margaret Firth offered prayer and the Scripture lesson from Mark 16, was read by Miss Doris Sample. During the business period, Misses Mae Davidson and Doris Sam­ ple were appointed as Home Helpers’ Secretaries. Mrs. Sanderson, Miss Firth and Mrs. Mundell were appoint­ ed as a programme committee, and Miss Mae Davidson was elected as pianist. A hymn was sung, after which Miss Acheson gave a very splendid address on the work of our mission­ aries and oft the work of the W.M.S. $f Canada. A short Biblical contest was enjoyed by all and the meeting closed with singing of a hymn and con­ cluding prayer by Miss Acheson.
