Importation of long list of semi­ non-essential ’ commodities^Aih^udirig all petroleum products, to be by per­ mit only, on a decreasing scale, Excise tax of 25% imposed on many electrical and other appliances, including radios, cameras and vacuum cleaners. Custom duty on 84 classifications of United Kingdom products removed or lowered sharply. Importation of passenger automo­ biles from non-sterling countries pro­ hibited. Excise tax on automobiles up to value of $700 increased from 10 to 20 per cent. Import restrictions announced by Finance Minister Ilsley are effective at once but will not apply to "any goods which on or before December 2,. 1940, were in transit to Canada." Tariff changes apply to goods tak­ en out of warehouse for consumption on or after December 2, 1940, and to goods previously imported but for which no entry for consumption was made before that date. Excise taxes apply to all goods im­ ported or taken out of warehouse for consumption on or after December 2, 1940, and to goods previously import­ ed*' for which no entry for consump­ tion was made before that date. “Stqrlipg areas," mentioned in the taxation resolutions introduced in the House of Commons are defined in the resolutions, as follows: ' “Territories under >the sovereignty, protection, suz­ erainty or mandate of His .Majesty (except Canada, Newfoundland and Hong Kong) and such other territor­ ies, whether or not under the sover­ eignty, protection, suzerainty or man­ date of His Majesity as may be desig­ nated by order-in-council." .. Wife Preserver^ Is Now Pilot Officer James Thompson of the R.C.A.F., who has been home on- furlough for the past .two weeks, left Tuesday for Ottawa. Mr. and Mrs., Roy Vogan spent Monday in Galt. On Tuesday evening, Nov. 26th, a large crowd gathered in the Commun­ ity Hall here to bid farewell rto Mr. and Mr§. Roy Johnson before leaving for their new home in Carthage. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, who ,have been in charge of the cheese factory here, for the past sev’en years, have bought the CarthagJLfhbese factory and had their household effects moved there Thurs­ day. Mr. George McDonald was chair­ man for ithe evening, and after a pro­ gram of singing, musical selections, and solos, Mr. and Mrs. Johnson were called to the platform and Mr. Jim Hardie read a most appropriate ad­ dress, and four of the milk-drawers, Messrs. George Brown, Oscar Rup- pell, Albert Ashley and Henry Camp­ bell presented Mr. and Mrs. Johnston with a lovely end table, tri-lite- floor lamp, feiectric .toaster, and fancy dish. Mr. Johnson replied and thanked his many friends for their generous gifts, after which "For They Are Jolly Good Fellows" was sung. Lunch was then served and the remainder of the. evening spent in dancing. Although we are sorry to lose Mr. and Mrs..
