Zilliax, of Elmira, were week-end guests of Mayor and, Mrs. J. H. Crawford. Mrs. Fred Carter is spending a few weeks with her daughter, Mrs. C. R. ' « ‘ OBITUARY Roland Ryerson Armstrong A former Wingham businessman, Roland Ryerson Armstrong, of Vic­ toria, B.C., passed On recently at Sas­ katoon, Sask. He was in his 64th year. He had not been in gbod health for Some time and died at Saskatoon While he was oft his way from his home in Victoria to Ottawa to Visit With his only brother, T. V, Arm­ strong. He was born hear St. Marys, was educated at Orangeville and for a number of years op'erated a photo­ graphic establishment here. For 30 years he was with the Canadian Ko­ dak Company and for the past six years has lived retired at Victoria, B. C Besides his mother he Is survived by two nephews. Burial took place at Ottawa. in her 15th year and was very .popular among a large circle of' friends. A member of Bluevale United Church, she was very active in the Sunday School where she played the organ. She was also a valued member, of the Mission Band. She leaves to mourn her passing, her parents and four sisters, Mrs.- Gra­ ham (Alberta) Wray, of Turnberry; Mrs. Leslie (<51ive) Clark, of Port Rowan; Alba and June, at home. Tooke of' Paisley, became the bride of And­ rew H. McTavish, young Teeswater lawyer, and only son of Mr. and Mrs. H. B. McTavish, of Paisley. • The wed­ ding to.ok place at the home of ReV. Harold Trinier, a close friend of the .groom, who tied the nuptial knot, in the presence of -some of the groom’s fraternity brethren. The bride looked lovely in 'a black velvet-trimmed suit of joy-rose Crepe. After the ceremony a wedding din­ ner* was served at the .Royal York Hotel. The young couple enjoyed a shbrt honeymoo.n trip, and .have taken up residence in Teeswater this Week. The Wingham Branch of the Can­ adian Red Cross this week made their third shipment of. completed articles to headquarters, consisting of 108'pr. , sox, TO sweaters, 48h scarves, 48 pair Wristlets, 18 pair pyjamas, 18 hospital bed gowns, 12 T binders, 12 hamp- ton bed pads, 24 pillow cases, 9 doz­ en hemmed handkerchiefs, total value $200. 0 In the near future, the local Red Cross' intends having a display of work, which will enable all who ate interested, to see the different articles required by the Red Cross, and how they are made, marked and packed. The date of this interesting event will be anno-Unced next week. In the mean­ time, will the women, please remem- ber that the work room is open every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoon. The World’s Day of Prayer programme was fol­ lowed for the devotional- part of the meeting. Theme was “In quietness and,Confidence shall be your strength. The call to worship “Be still and know that I am God.” The meeting opened with quiet .music played by Mrs. Wm. McDowell. “The Garden of Prayer.’’ The members joined in singing the chorus. Mrs. Fred Cook, the leader of the Feb. group, led in the responsive readings. Hymn “O, worship the King’’ was sung, follow; ed . with prayer. “Breathe on me breath of God” was sung unaccompan­ ied. Bible readings were read by Mrs. J.'Buchanan, W. Campbell and Mrs. E. Rodger. Prayer by Mrs. F. Cook. The Intercessory prayers were given by Mrs. A. Walsh, for. those who serve in our defence; Mrs. Wm. Mc­ Dowell, for those who suffer in any way; Mrs. . Gordon Snell, for the strengthening of our national life; Mrs. Wm. McVittie, for missions; Mrs. R. Vincent, for the Church. A prdy&r in time of war, Mrs. Fred J. Cook.' Hymn “Unto the hills around do I lift up my longing eyes” was sung., Devotional address on “What Is Prayer?”,was given by Mrs. W. F. Campbell. A paper on “God Answers Prayer” was written by Mrs. John Cook, read by Mrs. Fred J. Cook. A ! solo “A Clean Heart” was rendered ] by Winnifred Campbell. The benedic­ tion was repeated in unison. The bus­ iness was conducted by the president, Mrs. Wm. McVittie. The roll was called, each one answering with a verse of Scripture, for the quilts to spring bale. The about 16 members baby band. The president dismissed the meeting with prayer. Mr. Albert Campbell spent the week-end in Toronto with his daugh­ ter, Miss Marjorie Campbell, R.N., of Toronto. Mr. Jasper McBrien, of Goderich, visited with his sister, Mrs. Percy Vin­ cent, and other friends. Mr. Maitland Henry visited last week with Toronto friends. Miss Edna Plowman, of Morris Township, spent Sunday with her sis­ ter, Mrs. Edgar Howatt. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Campbell and- family visited on Friday with Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Johnston, of West Wawanosh. Mrs. J. D. Elsley, of Listowel, is visiting her mother* Mrs. J. E. Ellis. , Mr. Marvin McDowell attended the annual meeting of the West Wawa- hosh Fire Insurance Company at Dun­ gannon on Friday. Mr. R. Stonehouse* of Goderich, visited On Sunday with his father, Mr. J. D. Storehouse* who is in poor health. Miss Mae.Tunney, Brantford, vis­ ited at the home of her cousin, Mrs. Walter Cook. Mr. Wm. McDowell who on Tuesday, Feb. 13th*. celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary. Mrs. Mc­ Dowell was formerly Elizabeth Snell* daughter of the late Mr, and Mrs. G. Snell of the 3rd concession of East Wawanosh, Mr. McDowell is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Mc­ Dowell of the 6th concession of East Wawanosh,, The ceremony was per­ formed by the late Rev, R, A, Miller (then stationed at Auburn and pastor of the former Methodist ^church) in the presence pf about 125 guests. The wedding march was played by the bride’s sister, Miss Minnie Snell while the flower girl was formerly Miss Al­ berta Snell. To this happy union were born three daughters and one son: Mrs. Gordon Smith, of Goderich, Mrs. Charles Smith of the 6th line of East Wawanosh; Jean and Gordon at home. Both Mr.' and Mrs, McDowell are' members of good standing in the Westfield Unitde Church and willing and faithful workers. Mr. McDowell is a member of the Board of Stew­ ards. Mrs, McDowell is a member of the W.M.S. and Woman's Association. Mr, and Mrs. McDowell celebrated their anniversary at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Vincent of Belgrave, who on Feb. 14th also celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary. They were married at the home of the bride’s parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. John McDowell. The bride being Miss Ber­ tha McDowell. Mr. Vincent is the 'Son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Menno Vincent. The ceremony was perform­ ed by Rev. R. A. Miller and the flow­ er girl Mrs. Sid McClinchey (Elva Walden) niece of the bride. To them w? also extend congratulations, Mr. Gordon Smith of Goderich vis­ ited op Sunday at the home'of Mi\ and Mrs. J. L. McDowell. Rev. H. C.. Mrs. Field offered prayer. Total cash re­ ceipts were $57,925.71, apd expenditure $22,243.08. Supposed or, reported loss­ es in 1939 not yet adjusted are $9,400. The company’s total assets are set $49,138.50 in bonds and cash of $26,- 757.63, amounting in all to $79,069.73, with liabilities $22,284.25. The bride was formerly Elizabeth Ann McBrien and the groom, Percy Ray Vincent was the son of the late Mr,’ Menno and Ann .Vincent, of Westfield. Only the immediate relatives and six’ girl friends were present at the wedding. Three daughters. blessed this happy union, Marie, of Clinton Hospital, Mrs. Lloyd Miller (Vefna, of Hullett Township, and Evangeline at home. Mr. and Mrs. Vincent lived at White­ church for four years before returning to Westfield where they have since resided. The .community extend congratula­ tions to Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Nesbit,, who on Saturday celebrated their 17th wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Nesbit were married in England com­ ing to Canada for their honeymoon. For the past fourteen years they have resided on their farm on the 2nd con­ cession, E. Wawanosh. This union: was blessed with four children, Mary Margaret, Frank and Lawrence.
