Minutes of last meeting were read and approved, The Reeve reported on matters of interest which had taken place at the last meeting of County Council and incidentally remarked that there would be no change this year in the county rate but would be the same as in 1938. Messrs. King and Speiran, of Ethel, addressed the Council in reference to the killing of weeds on the township roads giving an estimate of the cost of this work. Council were of the op­ inion that ,something would have to be done to control this menace and it is expected that some of the roads will be treated a little later in the season. On motion of Beecroft and ; Mc­ Dowell the collector was relieved of any further duties in connection with •his office who reported that between $1300 and $1400 of 1938 ttaxes were still outstanding. These amounts will be forwarded in due time to the Coun­ ty Treasurer for collection, The following accounts were paid: The Municipal World, supplies $9,84; M. McDowell, salary as Assessor $70.00, equalizing Police Village and Union School Sections *$44.00; A. Pat­ tison, balance salary as Collector $15.- 00; Stan Johnston, drawing stone, .40; Geo. She felt that the gracious gentle manner of Queen Elizabeth was an ideal for Women's Institute members to live up to. She also spoke, of the power 'of united W. I, mem-,- bers and its influence on our country. Miss Flora Durnin, Home Econom­ ics coach, spoke of her work and the opportunity it was giving young girls and of the strong link it was forming between the girls and senior branches. . During the meeting sing songs were conducted by Mrs. W. C. King, Brus­ sels, a reading was contributed by Miss Margaret Turvey and a piano duet by Mrs. West and Miss Jean Bryans was enjoyed. Mrs. L. Note These Big Values The West • Huron District annual meeting was held in McKay Hall, in Goderich, on Friday, June 9th, with a good attendance of delegates and vis­ itors from eleven branches. Mrs. F. Oster, district president, opened the meeting, all joining in singing “God Save the King.” The morning session was taken by reports of Branch secretaries, all having very good reports. Convenors of standing committees gave good reports of branches along their different head­ ings. The district treasurer’s report showed cash on hand from the prev­ ious year, collection at District An­ nual, District Fees and Federation fees, Legislative grant and County grant, bank interest, making a total of $304.13; expense $141.67, leaving a balance on hand of $162.46. ' One of the items of business dis­ cussed was the compiling and publish­ ing of a book of the history of West Huron Women’s Institute since it was organized. This book is expected to be completed by March 1st, 1940. Miss Durnin spoke of her work' with the girls’ clubs. She had 51 girls tak­ ing part in Achievement Day at Clin­ ton and the work done on the whole had improved. Miss May Frisby, of Belgrave, is one of the girls to com­ pete at the C.N.E. Mayor H. J. A. McEwen welcomed the guests to Goderich and gave the Institute a great deal of praise. Mrs. R. Davidson, of Dungannon, made a pleasing reply. The afternoon session opened with comunity singing led by Mrs. Saund­ ers, of Goderich. Miss M. Clark, sup­ erintendent of Institutes, was the guest speaker for the afternoon, this being her first and only visit to this district. She explained the Co-Opera­ tive Programme and local leader training school. A course on Refin­ ishing of Furniture, was the choice of the majority of Branches to be held at Londesboro in September. An Of­ ficers’ Rally will be held in Auburn in August. Mrs. (Dr.) Oakes favored the meeting with a very beautiful solo and encore. .Miss Proctor, of Belgrave, moved a 1st Vice—Mrs. B. Huron District Women’s Institute was held at Fordwich on Friday, June 9th, The president, Mrs. Haraid S’pier, Brussels, presided at both the morn­ ing and afternoon sessions. The sec.-treas. reported seven branches. Total number of members 225; number of meetings "79, attend­ ance, 1917; number of papers and ad­ dresses, 112. District Receipts $137.60, Expenditures, $71.46; Balance $65,60. Total receipts for the branches, $822.- 58; Total Expenditures $625.61; Bal­ ance $196.97. The president in her ad­ dress, stressed a study of the Hand Book also Home and Country, and gave some hints for a well balanced programme. • The convenors of standing commit­ tees presented very fine reports of the branches along all lines of Insti­ tute activities, each one in turn added a suggestion, where she thought im­ provements could be made. The afternoon session opened with singing “The Maple Leaf”, Miss Florence Douglas president of the Rutnam Girls, who were the hostesses for the meeting, gave the address of welcome, and was responded to by Mrs. Victor Shcra, of Gorrie, Miss Hopkins, of Toronto, repre­ sented the Department, She e’xplaincd the value of a summary day, and led a ’ discussion on the Co-Operative pro-1 gramme. During the discussion, it was decided there would be no dis­ trict project this year, and a request would be sent to the department for a District Rally to be held at Ethel the end of July. The topic-was taken by Mrs. Ram­ age, who read extracts from “The Quest of the Holy Grail.” Short ex­ tracts dealing with the work of the student missionaries were read by sev­ eral members.
