She was accompanied by her daughters, Miss Kay Jewin and Mrs. Reg Palmer of Lon­ don. Mr. Wes Bevington and fam­ ily spent Sunday in Detroit as i guests of Mr, and Mrs. William Walker. Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell Haskett were weekend guests of Mrs J. C. Davey of Woodstock. Miss Rose Marie Robb and friend, Miss June Mackenzie, spent last weekend with the former's parents, Mr, and Mrs. Cecil Robb. Sunday visitors with Mrs. Wes Atkinson included Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Atkinson and family and Mr. and Mrs. W, Armstrong all of London. •Mrs. Harold Ribson is on the sick list. Mrs. M, O. Smith has return­ ed home from a visit with her brother, Mr. George Lachie, at Kitchener and her sister, Mrs. Les Franey at Waterloo. Rev. and Mrs. J. P. Prest and Messrs. Wilson and Harvey Hodgins attended the illustrated lecture on the Holy Land given by Bishop Luxton in St. John’s Anglican Church, Strathroy, last Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Art McLean of London called on Lucan friends on Sunday. Weekend guests with Mr. and Mrs. Evan Hodgins were Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Davis and family of Saintsbury on Satur­ day and Mr. and Mrs. Bob Rob­ inson of London on Sunday. When the Rev. J. P. Prest made his hospital calls last Mon­ day his five St. Joseph calls were on Hodgins’—Mr. I. D. Hodgins, Miss Hattie Hodgins, Miss Gertrude Hodgins, Mr, Al­ fred Hodgins and little Linda Hodgins—all from Lucan and vicinity. Mr. and Mrs. Sheridan Rev- ington and family were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. Pol­ lard of Ingersoll. Dr. and Mrs. Ken Banting of Pt. Huron were Thursday guests with Mrs. W. T. Banting and family. Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Irwin and Sharon of Hickson were week­ end guests of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Mathers. Mr. and Mrs. Harold 'Butler, Sr., and Mrs. William Aylestock attended the funeral of Mrs. Robert Session in Stratford last Thursday. Members of the Lucan Pente­ costal Holiness Church and friends met at the home of Mrs. Rufus Thompson, last Wednesday night, to do honor to two former members, Miss Kathleen Graham (now Mrs. Robert Dempster) and Mr. George Thompson, who was recently married in Holy Trinity Church. The former was present­ ed with bathroom scales and the latter a cannister set, cooky jar, and recipe book. Mrs. F. P. Anglican Group Sells Yule Trees The Anglican Men’s Club held its December meeting in the Parish Hall last Monday evening with the president, Mr. JacK Murdy, ip the chair, and Mr. Clarence Haskett’s group in charge of program and refresh­ ments. The guest speaker was the Rev. E. J. Roulston, speaking'on the place of religion in present day life. Mr. Leroy Bryan, of Granton, entertained with his marimba. In the absence of Mr. Ken Clarke, Mrs. Clarence Hardy accom­ panied the carol singing. During the business session, as a mofiey-raising project, it was decided to sell Christmas trees. Many of those present promised to purchase a tree. The proceeds will go towards the new projec­ tor. Children View Puppetry Show A large crowd of parents and children attended the Legion’s Christmas party in the Com­ munity Centre last Friday night, when 200 treats were donated to children (under 10 years of age) in Lucan and community. The hand puppet show, staged by the London May Court Club, drew a big hand of applause as did Santa. Claus. Others on the program included Mr. Howard Kew and Marsha and Jo-Ann Ribson, Explorer News The 23rd Expedition of the Lu- can-Clandeboye Explorers was held in the United Church par­ lors last Monday, with an at­ tendance of 32. One new member was welcomed, Sandra Thomp­ son from Winnipeg. Prior to the Expedition’s opening of purpose and motto the Explorers made Christmas corsages and practic­ ed carols. Worship service was taken by Joan Schlueter, Ruth Frost, Bar­ bara Park and Barbara Ready. Counsellor Kae Haskett finished- the experimental Expedition 'of the Lord’s Prayer, which was followed by the Explorers in groups writing their version of the same. p Christmas Theme For Wl Meeting ' The first vice president, Mrs. Wes Hodgins, presided, at the December meeting of the Lucan W. I. in the Community Memor­ ial Centre last Thursday after­ noon. There was a display of Christ­ mas decorations anti, Christmas cookies. Each member was ask­ ed to bring four cookies made from a favourite recipe and also the recipe. These were displayed on a long table and later used for lunch. Many made copies of the recipes which appealed to them. All present were shocked to hear of the death of W. A. Suth­ erland, Middlesex county clerk, especially as he had been the branch’s guest speaker at the October “Family Night” meet­ ing. The treasurer reported a bal­ ance of $72.87. With the resignation of Mr. Murray ■ Hodgins as president of the Cancer Society in Lucan, Mrs. Sheridan Revington and Mrs. Harold Hodgins were named W.I. representatives to meet with other representatives in the village, to carry on the work here. The guest speaker was Mrs. E. J. Roulston, who told the im­ pressive story of the “Legend of the Black Madonna.” This was followed by the sing­ ing of Christmas carols, led by Mrs. Murray Hodgins, the pres­ ident, with Mrs. Erwin Scott at the piano. Ward Hodgins also entertained with piano numbers. Hostesses for the meeting were Mrs; Roy Hamilton,. Mrs. Wm. Brownlee and Mrs. Murray Hod­ gins. Members are asked to save all used stamps from Christmas mail and bring to the January meeting. Business Men's Draw In spite of a drizzling rain, there was a good turnout for the Lucan Business Men’s draw at 3 p.m. last Saturday. The lucky winners were: Mr. Charles Wind­ sor, Mrs. Don O’Neil and Mr. Norman Coursey, each of whom won a $5 voucher. Only one other name was drawn, Mrs. Allan Scott, who, being absent, was not eligible for a prize. The next 4raw will be Saturday, December 22, followed bv the big draw on Christmas Eve. Mrs. W. Langford Dies In Granton Mrs. Warner Langford, 87, who died suddenly in her Granton home, Friday, Dec. 14, lay at rest in the C. Haskett and Son funeral home, till 2 p.m. Mon­ day when Rev. Thos. G. Head of the Granton United Church, con­ ducted funeral services. Inter­ ment was in Mt. Pleasant Cem­ etery, London, Pallbearers were Percy Bilyea, William Sherville, Earl Middleton, Austin Hobbs, Walker Gibson and Victor West­ man, ' ■ Mrs. Langford, the former El­ iza Jane Weir, was the daughter of the late David Weir and Jane Bilyea. She was born hi London Township, July 10,1869. She mar- ried Warner Langford in 1900 and moved to Granton in 1910. Her husband predeceased her in 1936 and a son, Leroy in 1906. She was. a member of -the Gran­ ton United Church. She is survived by one daugh­ ter, Edith (Mrs. Clare Westman) three grandchildren, Grant, Bar­ bara and Ralph Westman, and three great grandchildren, also one sister, Mrs. Selena Loch­ art of New Westminster, two brothers, Bryan Weir also of New Westminster and Fred Weir of Ft. Francis. Church Co-operation There is co-operation and good­ will among Lucan’s three church­ es. Next Sunday the Anglican church is arranging to begin evening service at 6.45 p.m. to enable members to attend the C.G.I.T. Candle-light service in the United Church at 7.30. On Dec. 30 Scouts, Cubs, Explorers and C.G.I.T. will attend the An­ glican church in groups and the three clergy will take part in a union service. A Win And A Loss Last week we reported Mrs. Art McLean of London (nee Eva Revington) winning a car. By a strange co-incidence this week we report her sister, Mrs. Len Lobsingei* (nee Jean Revington) of Sarnia losing a car. Her husband, Dr. Len Lobsin­ ger, was driving near Sarnia with his new car when he was hit by a young driver in a truck. Dr. Lobsinger narrowly escaped but his new car was completely wrecked. Present Purses To Two Couples At the Lucan Memorial Centre on Friday evening a presentation of money was made to two re­ cently married couples. Following dancing to the Lu­ can orchestra Mrs. Clarence Carter read an address and Mr. Beverly Cunningham made the presentation to Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Carter (nee Pauline Simpson of Kirkton) who have taken up residence in London and Mr. Alan Elston to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hall (nee Donna Grant of London) who are living in Lambeth. During the lunch hour’ Mr. Glenn Fisher of Exeter enter­ tained with selections on the bag­ pipes leading the bridal parties in a grand march. Personal Items Mrs. Wes Atkinson spent last week-end in London, the guest of Dr. and Mrs.' Marvin Smout, go­ ing with the latter to Toronto on Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Wasnidge and Billie, of McGillivray, and Miss Vera Wasnidge, of Toronto, were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. N. W. Wasnidge, when they celebrated Miss Vera’s birthday. R Yuletide Spirit LUCANPHONE 41-WJ" Scouting Value Speaker's Topic Mr. Harold Whyte was the speaker at the December meet­ ing of the United Church Men’s Club, held on Wednesday. Mr. Whyte spoke on Scouting and its value to the community. Mr, Alex Young, president, conducted the meeting, and Mrs. John McClean accompanied for the carol singing. During the business session, it was decided to hold meetings from September to March, ter­ minating with an annual banquet. Personal Items Miss Inez McRoberts spent Sunday in Woodham, the guest of her brother Mr. Theron Creery and family. Mrs. M. O, Smith, Saturday night received a phone call from her husband from Pt, Albert, Sask., saying he was starting home. Mrs. Andy Carter presided and the devotional was taken by Mrs. E. Tomes, Mrs. E. Flynn and Rev. J. P. Prest. Mrs. Andy Carter was named president of the W.A. for 1957; vice president is Mrs. E. Tomes; secretary-treasurer, Mrs. Karl O’Neil; Dorcas conveners, Mrs. Aimer Hendrie, Mrs. Roy Mc- Rann and Mrs. J. Hewitt; visit­ ing committee, Mrs. J. H.
