Lucan Correspondent: Miss Lina Abbott U Honors Lucan Man One1 of the three ministers receive honorary Doctor of Di­ vinity at a special University of Western Convocation in Huron College, December 4, will be Ven. Clarence W. Foreman, archdeacon of Middlesex and rector of St. John the Evangelist since 1935. Though born in Gran­ ton he spent his childhood in Lucan attending public and high school here. He graduated from the Un­ iversity of Western Ontario through Huron College in 1914. His first appointment was as curate of St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, where he returned after serving as chaplain in World War I. He served as rector in Waterloo and Walkerville.. At the outbreak of World War II he joined the army as chaplain with the rank of captain. * He returned to London in 1942 to resume his rectorship of, St. John the Evangelist, 'Food Fashions' The “Food Fashions for ’57’’ demonstration sponsored by the Lucan W. L and conducted* by the consumer service depart­ ment of Silverwood Dairies Ltd., was held in the Community Me­ morial Centre last Monday night with an attendance of 112. Tlife. members, who had worked so hard to make the meeting a success breathed a sigh of re­ lief when the one hundredth lady crossed the threshold for an at­ tendance of 100 meant a $25 cheque for the W. I. The two yellow and blue clad demonstrators, Mrs. D, Ward and Mrs. R. Book, gave an in­ teresting talk on balanced diet and nutritious foods. By means of a large mirror their many most appetizing, salads, cakes, cookies and pies could readily be seen by everyone and later sampled from a display table in front of the stage. Three door, prizes (six water glasses) were donated during the program. The first, drawn by Mrs. Ward, went to Mrs, J. H. Cantelon. Little Janet Book drew Mrs. Art Hodgins’ name. The president, Mrs. Murray Hod­ gins, was asked to make the third draw. Much to the amuse­ ment of those present and Mrs. Hodgins’ embarrassment, she drew her own ticket. While the demonstration was being conducted, Mr. J. McIn­ tyre was busy in the kitchen preparing lunch. G. I. T. Meeting The Lucan C.G.I.T, held their regular meeting in the- United Church parlors last Monday eve­ ning. The worship service was taken by Mae Cobleigh followed by a special service in the church conducted by Mrs. John McLean. The president, Bever­ ley .Butler led in a sing-song. During the craft period, under the direction of Mrs. G. E. Nich­ olson, work on the bazaar* Christ­ mas stockings was continued, also work on leathey belts. Marsha Ribson, 10-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Har­ old Ribson was guest soloist at Knox United Church and Sunday School London, last Sunday. Junior Choir Party -Seventeen members! of Holy Trinity junior choir, organists and leaders, Mrs. Clarence Hardy and Mr, Ken Clarke,, the two choir mothers, Mrs,, Kay Egan and Mrs. Calvin Haskett and Bev, and Mrs, X P. Prest en­ joyed a happy outing last Sat­ urday evening. They first saw “Wee Georgie” at the Hyland Theatre and then had refresh­ ments at the “Three Little Pigs P entry,” Mission Society Contributes Gifts The W.M.S. of the Lucan United Church held its Novem­ ber meeting in the church par­ lors last Thursday afternoon with Mrs. Alex Young in the chair. Mrs. E. J. Roulston took charge of the program for Mrs. Banting, who was on the sick list. Following the worship service there was a discussion on the work of the United Church in Korea. Mrs. Murray Hodgins and Miss Doris Weir favoured with a duet. CARLING, BOX 13, LUCAN, ONT, children’s gifts to be sent to the port worker at Halifax to be presented to the children of New Canadians upon landing Wl Demonstrates I Men's Club Aids Scouts The November meeting of the Lucan Men’s Club was held in the United Church parlors last Wednesday evening with the president, Mr. Alex Young, in the chair and Mr, Gordon Ban- , ting’s group in charge of the program and refreshments, $25 Was voted to the Lions Club to assist in sending a scout to the World Jamboree in England in 1957. It was also decided to send a number of the church school to the Boys’ Parliament at Waterloo, the end of Decem­ ber. The guest speaker was, Mr. Elmer Banting, general manager of Downham’s Nursery in Bow- manville, who showed slides on horticulture. Other numbers on the pro­ gram consisted of poems by Mr. Gordon Banting, piano numbers by Dene'Donaldson and Howard Kew and a duet by Ilene and Cor- alyn Donaldson. Mr. Banting told of his meeting with Nellie Mc- Lung while in the west. Former Teacher Dies In Toronto Funeral services for Mrs. Her­ bert (Bert) Kennedy of Agin­ court, who died very suddenly in Scarboro General Hospital, Toronto, were held in the Knox Presbyterian Church, Agincourt, Monday, Nov. 19 with interment in Knox cemetery. Daughter- of the late Mr. and Mrs, Edward Mara, Mrs. Ken­ nedy was the ^former Ida Mara and was born'in Lucan. She at­ tended the Lucan public and high school and later taught in the high school here before going to Agincourt to teach. While in Lu­ can she was a member of Holy Trinity church. Surviving, besides her hus­ band, are one son, William ’Ken­ nedy, and two grandchildren, Frances and Bert all of Agin­ court, also one sister and one brother Mrs. Mabel McComb of London, and Edward Mara of Parkhill. Anglican Club Enjoys Social The recently organized Men’s Club of Holy Trinity Church had a splendid turn-out to their first social evening in the Parish Hall last Monday night. The president, Mr. Jack Murdy, presided and Mr. Erwin Scott’s group had' charge of the pro­ gram and refreshments. Rev. J. P. Prest introduced the guest speaker, the Rev. Can­ on A. Abraham of St. Andrew Memorial Church, London, who chose as his topic. “Anglican Heritage.” Other numbers on the pro­ gram included solos by Mr. Earl Walls of Arva and tap dances by Judy Haskett. During a short business ses­ sion plans were made for the erection of the walls for the new garage at the rectory on Satur­ day. Baptize Infants At Holy Trinity On Sunday morning at the Anglican Church, Rev. J. P. Prest baptized Candice Joan Cummins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Cummins of Willow­ dale. Godparents were Mr. and Mrs. ~ _‘ Joan Parent (proxy); Jeffrey Paul Culbert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Merton Culbert, whose god­ parents were Mr. and Mrs. Wil­ mer Scott. On Sunday afternoon, Novem­ ber 18 he baptized Dianne Mur­ iel Corbett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Corbett, whose god­ parents were Mrs, Harold Cor­ bett, Miss Elva Yqung and. Mr. James Young; Joan Diane Prest, daughter of Mr. and. Mrs. ,S. V. Prest of Willowdale, whose godparents were, Mr. and Mrs. Justin W. Vaughan of Toronto and Mrs. J. P. Prest. Thomas Atkinson Lodge Member Thomas Wesley Atkinson, 66, who died very suddenly in his home on Main St., Wednesday, November 21, lay at rest in the Murdy funeral home till Fri­ day, Nov. 23 when the Rev. J.’ P. Prest of Holy Trinity Angli­ can Church conducted a private funeral service followed by a public service in Holy Trinity Church. Interment was in St. James cemetery, Clandeboye. Pallbearers were Harold Ry­ an, George Hodgins, William Brownlee, Clayton Haskett, Har­ vey T. Hodgins and Harold Hod­ gins. A masonic service was held in the funeral home at 9 p.m« Thursday evening and Orange­ men attended the church in a body on Friday.•> Son of the late William and Ellen Jane Atkinson ho was born on Con. 2 Biddulph and at­ tended S.'S. No. 2 Biddulph school. He left, the farm in April 1931 and came to Lucan as a car salesman. He was a member of Holy Trinity Church, L.O.L. 493 and Irving Masonic Lodge 154.
