Dr. H. Savage of Pon tiac, Mich., spoke to crowded congregations, both morning and evening at the United Church anniversary services on Sunday, overflow crowds having been taken to the basement where loud speakers were installed. Dr. Savage retired to the base ment at both services and spoke during the singing, of the last hymn by the upstairs congrega tion. Dr. Godsell of Detroit in troduced the speaker. Dr. Savage took as his sub ject for the morning the ABC of the gospel, and in the evening the story of the Good Samaritan. In the morning the choir render ed an anthem, and Mrs. C. Ken nedy and Mrs, Ross Love sang a duet “Rock of Ages.” At the evening service a men's chorus sang but the music of the day was climaxed when the choir rendered the new anthem “My God, How Great Thou Art,” with Mr. Harry Hoffman of Dash- Wood taking the solo. The congregation consisted of attendants from Detroit, London and surrounding points. The United Brethren Evangelical Church at Dashwood and the Church of God, Grand Bend can-' celled their evening services, Confirmation . On Sunday morning the an nual confirmation service held in St. John’s-by-the-Lake Anglican Church, when sixteen candidates from Thedford were confirmed. Suffragan Bishop Tqwnsend of London was in charge of the confirmation serv ice and spoke to a crowded con gregation from Thedford, Grand Bend, Dashwood and other near by points. Pastor Honored On Monday evening of, last week at the Church of God a surprise and presentation was tendered to the pastor, Rev. E. Wattam and Mrs. Wattam for their five years of faithful serv ices. Quartettes, duets, readings and choruses made up the pro gram, after which Rey, and Mrs. Wattam were asked to sing their favorite hymn, at the close of which Mr, Alec Desjardine read an address and Miss Marion Snid er presented Mr. and Mrs. Wat tam with a sum of money from the congregation, Mr. Wattam made a suitable response of thanks remarking it was riot only a duty but a real pleasure to" woi;k among such a co-oper ative congregation. Hallowe'en Party t, >On Wednesday evening (Hal- ■lowelen) the Lions Club gave their'annual party to the child ren of the district. Some really original costumes were worn by the youngsters, who were shown some films by the Aldon Theatre, after which those in costume came before the judges, who de cided on the winners: Girls, 1 to 5, Wendy Williams, Mary Sturdevant, Barbara Thom as; boys, ,1 to 6, 'Patty Pugh, Scptt Jackson, 'Jeff1 Finch'; girls, 5 to 8, Anti Sturdevant, Kathy. At the close of the evening’s entertainment each child was given a bag of (treats, when 226 bags of candy,were disposed of. Attend Stratford Dedication Mr, and Mrs, Wm. Sturdevant and family attended the dedica tion of the new 'addition to the Stratford4 United Church on Sun day, which will be used as Sun day School accommodation. Dr. J. - R. Mutchmor, M.A., j D.D., was the guest speaker, while* Rev. J. M. Colling, a former’ pastor of Grand Bend United Church is the regular minister of this charge. During the service the differ ent men who had been, employed in the construction . of the new edifice were 'given a special rec ognition, among whom was Mr. Sturdevant. After the evening service an open house ^was held and re freshments served to the visit ors. Personal Hems Mr. and Mrs. W. Whyte and family of Toronto spent the week end with Mr. and Mrs. Elgin Webb. Miss Leona Kowalchuk of Sandy Lake, Manitoba, is visit ing with her brother 'and sister- in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John Ko- walchuck for a few weeks. Bill Brenner, son of Mr- and Mrs. Glen Brenner, is a patient in St. Joseph’s Hospital, London, but is reported this week to be doing nicely. Mr. and Mrs, Robert Love of Thedford and Mr, and Mrs, Col in Love of Shipka were Sunday guests of Mr, and Mrs. William Love and attended the anniver sary services in the United Church. Trus cott of Detroit, spent, the week end at their cottages, attending the United Church anniversary services and entertaining Dr. Henry Savage. Oh Tuesday evening, the first fall meeting of the 3-M Club met in the church basement, with 24 present. Mrs. Glen Stewart read the Scripture lesson. Readings were given by Mrs. Edwin Miller, Mrs. Melvin Gardiner and William Rhode; poems by Mrs. Rhode and Glen Stewart, and a piafto solo by Mrs. Lloyd Knight. Business was conducted by the president, Mrs. Donald Bray., It was decided to sell Scripture calendars.
