The Exeter Times-Advocate, 1956-09-13, Page 13Praise Role Of Weeklies At Convention In Quebec i Better Than Fair Results Th< Timt5'Advoc3?«/ September IX 1956 “Weekly newspaper editors have every reason to be proud of the role they play in Canada’s development.” This was the keynote of. Can adian. Weekly Newspaper As sociation president John A. Vop- ill’s opening address before the 500 editors and publish- //■Ik w1)0 assembled here last MKpjnesday to deliberate the prob- and significance of weekly Y"newspapers on . the Canadian scene. “The non-metropolitan news papers contribute in great meas ure to the stability of this na tion,” the Davidson (Sask.) Lead er editor said. “We must not overlook the tremendous signifi cance of our combined efforts fn both reflecting and moulding public opinion and public atti- o tudes from coast to coast.” At the same time, the group was urged to guard vigilantly the high respect and recognition won during the past half century. Several of the speakers at the 37th ‘annual convention compli mented the delegates on their accomplishments in building the in their home towns. Hors should examine "our pur poses as community servants and community leaders.” y He reminded the delegates that most of them are monopolists, publishing the only newspaper to serve their own immediate dist rict. “We are the local glasses— very often the only pair of local glasses—through which our friends and neighbors are ob served and ^evaluated,” he stat ed. "The temperature of many a * community is most correctly measured by the degree, of re- portorial and editorial responsi bility ef its local paper.”- “Are we prepared to wear as bravely as we can the badge of comniunity crusade and to wear it proudly.” he asked. “Do we consider ourselves, and impel ourselves, as equal in social sig- ‘ nificance and importance to the i politician and the priest or min-1 ’ster?” ■ Without giving a direct answer to his own question, Mr. Crans ton indicated strongly that he felt many weekly editors were too familiar with their own news- apers—had grhwn up with them and1 failed to realize the news paper’s importance, and the ed itor’s importance, to the com munity.
