One January evening when I cam§ in from the stable with Uncle Albert there was some thing missing from the kitchen. “What happened "to the tele phone?” demanded Uncle Albert. Aunt Martha pretended to be very busy around the stove as she replied: “The lineman was here and I ... oh ... I had him move it into the front hall.” “It’ll be kind of cold in there in the wintertime, won’t it?" he said, but I noticed a smile around the corners of his mouth. “It was a plagued nuisance dingling away here in the kitchen, all the time," replied Aunt Martha as she put. the platter of meat on the table. “Suoper’s on. Come and eat now. Harry, did you wash your hands?" The latter was purely a routine question because she' had seen me at the washstand. It served to change the subject about the telephone. I was amused by the incident because the evening before a cattle buyer had called on Uncle Albert. They sat in the’ kitchen because it was winter time, and since we were not expecting company there was.no fire in the heater in the front room. The telephone rang—three longs and two shorts. There was a family exchange of glances. Time For The Suiter's Call - It was Thursday evening and time for Sally Benson’s boy friend to phone her from town, She was a school teacher en gaged to the hardware clerk in town and the roads had been blocked for a month. He tele phoned every,Thursday and Sun day evening and everybody listened. It was as good as the continued story in the Farmers’ Advocate. We would sit around quietly and • Aunt Martha, with her hand over the mouth piece and the receiver to her ear, would listen, turning around every so often to toss back a choice tidbit .of gossip like: “Old Tom Kennedy, that used to work in Riddell’s store, died today , . . he says he misses her terribly. Hmph He wants her to come and visit in town over the week end. The school trustees won’t stand for that.” The Thursday evening that the cattle drover came we missed our weekly installment of the party line romance, ^fter that, if we had company and there was an interesting ring on the telephone, Aunt Martha would sit still for a few moments and then get up and start looking around as if there was some thing she had misplaced. Then she would walk into the front room and tip-toe through the far door into the hallway and so to the telephone. She always had a sweater handy in the hallway for such emergencies. We could always tell when she reached the telephone because there was one squeaky board she never seemed able to miss. After living in a “party line" house you developed a sense about calls that* were interesting and important. Two long and one short was no good. Tom Dyment was a bachelor and he used his telephone strictly for business. Four long was a good one be cause there were three teen-age girls at the Thomson, place and they had boy friends. Everybody listened for two long, two short rings, That-was Jack Mac-Vicar and he was insurance agent,, justice of the peace, pound keep er and secretary of the school board. You could hear about a fire or a theft or possibly strayed cattle or who the schoolteacher had as escort to the dance -0 the township hall. « Notorious Listener Abbie Jenkins was a notor ious listener. Her telephone was placed it a ‘’convenient spot on the wall so that she could sit down and concentrate on her listening. She also had a great clock and the ticking sound was a dead giveaway. Abbie would never admit listening to the telephone and would often comment on what a terrible habit it was for people to listen .in on telephone conver sations. Uncle Albert tricked her one time by suddenly stopping his conversation to the pig buyer and saying: “Abbie your clock is wrong." Before she had time to collect her, wits she said: “It is not. I set it this morning by the school bell.” Abbie was hor rified, but the community had a wonderful, chuckle. The strange part about a party line in the country is the fact that everybody listens but very, very few ever admit they do. On the other hand, if there’s a hint of tragedy, somebody sick or a fire, just listen to them chiming in, without any thought of pre serving their declaration of “no listening." Possibly women are more in clined to-cover up the fact that they listen. I remember my un cle picking up" the receiver one day, after the Jenkins’ ring went in. He wanted to know if it was Joe Henderson phoning to say when he would come to buzz wood. It was Joe, who said: “I’ll come and do your, wood first thing in the morning. Then I'll go on to Albert’s" My uncle had no compunction about saying: “Thanks, Joe, Abbie, will you tell Tom I’ll be over to help him and we can trade work. The" rest of you on the line—Martha, Grace, Mary, Rachel—tell the men I’ll buzz wood tomorrow af ternoon." The men all appeared and. there was no explanation asked or offered about how they knew when to come. Listening isn’t such a bad habit. I can remember as a very small boy "when my mother was sick. After she had been confined- to bed for four days, father cal led the doctor and within an hour four of .the neighbor women came along to help. They didn’t mention how they knew about her illness and. my father didn’t comment. He was mighty glad to see them. So was I, after a four- day diet, of hard fried eggs, burned toast and tinned beans, CLASSIFIED RATES 25 wprds or le$« 70 Mort Than 25 Words — 2$ P*r Word SUCCEEDING INSERTIONS Mor» Than 25 Words m U/?p P»r Word 20^ OFF if ad paid with order or by Saturday following the lot insertion $emi*Display (Restricted to First Insertion 1 Subsequent 84£ Per Classified ads accepted up till Wednesday noon, Auction sale copy should be in Tuesday at noon.
