We have no less than 30 names of local and district golf enthusiasts eager to tee off in the grand old finale. Still more names are coming'in and all are welcomed. We want as many names as possible to enter into this tournament as it gives the males a good chance to cover three sports at once. By this I mean HUNTING (for lost ball), FISHING (ball out of creek), and of course, the game of GOLF itself. This tournament is proving to be a booming success as it is showing the number of local golfers in the community who are interested in playing the game. I am hoping that the'shotmakers will not stop at this one get-together but will go on and form a club and a committee that will run tournaments over the different golf courses. Golf' courses at Mitchell, St. Marys., Goderich and the Bend are some of the different fairways that events could be held at to give the club swingers a chance at a variety of holes; In my previous column I said this tourney would be held around June 23. As of Thursday, June 21, we have pinned things down and found that this competition will be held officially from June 18 to June ,27. This is to give all of the boys a good .chance to participate in'the affair. Remember fellas, you can only play one round of 18 hole? and then you must hand in your score card to* the Sports Dept, at the T.A. Please print your names clearly on the scorecards before handing them in. Hal. Hooke and John Goman are the first two ✓players to hand in their scores. Hal shot a 99 while John, who has only been playing golf a year, had a 106. Nice shooting, John! .★ * * *★★ WEDDING BELLS—Bill Oberle, the Exeter Mo hawk hockey star, is now a happily married man. “Obie” was married on June 9 in Waterloo at the St. Louis Roman Catholic Church. We had the op portunity of attending his wedding and thought it was perfect. Bill and his wife, Barbara, will live on Marlboro ‘ St. in Exeter. We all want to wish the both of you the very best and may you have many years of happiness together. THIS 'N THAT—Toronto Maple Leafs of the International League may only be tied for fourth place in the league standings’ but I’ll bet they’re the only club that can boast of two no-hit performances this year by their pitchers. Don Johnston hurled a seven inning no-hitter and husky Lovenguth, newly acquired. Toronto pitcher, hurled a nine-inning dream game, winning 8 to 0. It would be nice tb see one of the underdog clubs like Cincinatti or Pittsburg come out on top at the end of the season. a Dashwood Tigers, who won their only game this week with a con- vincing 264 victory over Hensall Coach, took over first place in the Huron-Perth Intermediate ! baseball league standings from the Mitchell Legionaires. ■ Mitchell had to forfeit the top J rung as they dropped their ini- . tial game of the season to the up-and-coming Zurich ball club which won two games this week with the help of a strong import pitcher. Meanwhile the Exeter Mo hawks and Hensall Coach ball teams are having their troubles. Hensall still hasn’t hit the win column in five games and the, only two victories the tribe has posted have been over Hensall, Hensall and Exeter, who have gone more or less to the home brew players, are taking these defeats on the chin as most of the players lack experience for this Intermediate class of ball. However the two teams will keep plugging j way and no doubt will make the other teams in the league sit up and take notice be fore long. Dashwood Tigers in six games have pushed across the plate a total of 70 runs in six games while the other power-packed Mitchell team has accounted for 51 runs in five games. Zurich Flyers to date have scored only 16 runs in four ball games but have made them good for a third place standing. Exeter, tied with Zurich for third place have scored 43 runs. Flyers Blank Exeter 8-0 Zurich Flyers recorded their second consecutive win Monday night to move into a 500 aver age for the season with a two win and two loss record. By trampling Exeter Mohawks 8-0 in Zurich, the Flyers pulled into a two. -way tie with the tribe for third place in the league standings. Jim Attrili of Zurich flung a neat two-hitter and had his team mates perform, errorless ball be hind him. The only two Exeter players to get a hit off the righthander was Irvin Ford and Coach Bob Meharg. Both of the hits col lected in the first inning were singles. Attrili had a good fastball, change of pace and a slider working to perfection for him as he hung up a total of fourteen strikeouts. Steve Mitro, ace flinger for Exeter registered 13 strikeouts, but slow fielding by his team mates and misjudged fly balls in the outfield cost him the game. Zurich pounded out an even dozen hits. A pair of triples and two doubles were the biggest blows of the game. Shortstop Bill Zubyk and catch- Tom Rewlings shared the hitting honours of the’ game with each getting three hits in five times at bat. Zubyk was the power hitter of the seven inning affair as he tripled in the first; singled in the second and doubled in the fifth inning. Kovacic also lined out a three-bagger that was good for an R.B.I. -Exeter only had just enough players to start the game with and when Ford injured his ankle playing shortstop, local midget player Jim Russell was put into action. Although Jim had trouble see ing a couple of high flies that went for a double and triple, he made two sparkling one- handed catches in deep centre field. The Exeter club lacked punch in air but the battery department as they dropped their fourth game in six tries.' Zurich Flyers were full value for their win as they hustled the Exeter crew, right off the ball diamond. Score By Innings; Exeter ... Zurich .... Batteries: Rawlings; Meharg. The locals won 18-5. Hurler Bob Russell gained cred it for his second victory in three starts as he pitched a six-hitter to win his second consecutive victory over the Hensall nine. Hensall scored their runs in the first, third and fourth innings while Exeter registered runs in all five innings of the abbreviat ed game. The big first baseman, who has- been hitting the ball air over the lot all season, cracked out two triples and a single in. five trips to the plate. The only thing Bob Hayter lacked in going for the cycle was a triple. Bob was credited with a single the first time up. He smashed a double and hit a towering home run in his six of ficial appearances at the plate. Raymond Wein was good for a triple and three singles in five chances. Fifteen-year-old Russell Page, who played, short stop, had four safeties which were all of the single variety. " For Hensall, Bruce Moir was the only player to hit safely more than once-, He hit two singles in four trips. . Gerald Flynn walloped a double in the losing Hensall cause. Raymond Wein started on the mound for Dashwood and was re placed by Stormes in the fifth with the Tigers ahead 13-0, Rus sell Page took over from Bob Stormes in the ninth inning. ‘Gerald Bell replaced Ken Parker in the fifth for Hensall to toe the rubber and put out the fire on a nine-run Dashwood rally. Red and Steve Mitro each pounded out a respectable three for five. Gerald Bell, Jerry Rannie, Ken and George Packer were the leaders for the home team as they each pinned down one hit in three official trips to the plate. Young Pete Crocker and Bill Pincombe were ‘the only two tribesmen who failed to con nect for a single. All of Hens all’s hits were of the single variety. In the third inning, the Coach.-crew dropped in three texas league singles. These three hits and an error by Jim Haley who dropped a fly ball in left field accounted for three of their five runs. The longest clouts of the game came off the bats of playing coach Bob Meharg and Steve Mitro. Mitro hit a ball to centrefield er Bruce Moir who misjudged the fly ball and it went .for a triple. Bob Meharg smashed a liner into left-centrefield that was good for a double. The only double play of the ball -game was executed by the Hensall crew. Gerald Bell engin eered the play by tagging Me harg going into third after pick ing up a hot grounder and firing across the diamond to first base map Ken Parker to get Mitro to complete the twin killing? Fielding gems were turned in by Jerry Rannie and Steve Mit ro. ’ Second baseman Rannie went to his left quickly to pull down a line drive off t-.e bat of Bob Russell to rob Bob of what look ed to be a sure base hit. Mitro, playing the shortstop position, took the hit sign away from Mervyn Eyre as he made a good running Catch out behind sfecond base.
