Hodgins Cancer Head In keeping with a recently established policy of decentral­ ization, 'the formation of a Branch of the' Cancer Society for Lucan and vicinity (brings to a total of 10 the number of such branches established Im Middlesex ‘County since the first of the year. Simi- ■lar branches have been estab­ lished in Lambeth, Byron, Dor­ chester, Thorndale, Glencoe, Mt. Bryd-ges, Parkhill, Uderton and Strathroy. Mr, M. H. Hodgins has agreed to accept the office of 'president for the coming year and other officers who have volunteered to serve are Mrs. A. E. 'Reilly, vice-president; Mr. William McGrigor, secretary­ treasurer; Mrs. Art Black, edu­ cational committee; Mrs. Mel Culfoert, welfare committee; Mr. Cecil Lewis, campaign committee. These officers, -along with the officers of all other Middlesex branches, were recently guests of Mr. R. W. Robertson, president of the London and Middlesex Branch of the Canadian Cancer iSociety, at a dinner in the Lon­ don "Y”. At this meeting Dr. R. W. Begg of Western University gave an interesting address about ithe progress of cancer research down through the years and about what is being done at the present time. There were also forum discussions at which the various committee chairmen re­ ceived much valuable informa­ tion. It was also there decided that the territory which would be allotted to the ’Lucan Branch would foe ‘all of Biddulph Town­ ship, McGillivray Township east of the fourth concession and London Township from the fif­ teenth concession north, In view of the lateness of its organization* it has been decided ■to attempt no house-to-house canvas for funds this year since ■the National campaign concludes at the end of April. The commit­ tee, however, intends to make an appeal for 'assistance through other existing organizations and requests that donations either be handed • to any member of the above committee or sent direct to Box 32, London. Although the active campaign for funds con­ cludes at the end of April, the committee has made it. known that in matters of welfare and education it will be available for advice and assistance at any time during the -year. Paris Missionary Guest Speaker 'Rev. Holbert Munn, a mission­ ary under the Greater Europe Mission and servihg as a mem­ ber of the European Bible In­ stitute -in Paris, France, was the guest speaker at -the | Lucan Pentecostal tJ'hurch Monday night. The meeting was -under the auspices -of "The Youth for Christ" movement, London, with Mr. Clarence 'Shelley at the piano, Mr. Barry Moore directing the music and, three London girls contributing duets and violin numbers. Mr. Munn is 'home on a brief furlough, retunring to Paris • in May. A native of Ireland, lie at­ tended Bible School in the British Isles and South Carolina and was a missionary for five years in Africa, Spanish Guinea and Liiberaia.. He first gave an in­ teresting talk on his work in France and the cryinig need for more Jjvorkers and then showed beautiful pictures of Fra'iice and ■the work being done. Personal Items Mr. and Mbs. Tom Lee spent last Friday 'in Brinsley, guests of Mr. and Mrs. George Lee. Mrs. T. ,S. Hill returned to Weston for a week’s visit with her sister, Mrs. Cr.uickshan'k, who spent a few days’’with her in Lucan. 'She was joined by Mr. Hill of Woodstock for the week­ end in Weston. Before a large crowd last Tuesday night Lucan hockey fans saw the’ L’ucan Irish so down to defeat 3-2 giving the series to the Mitchell Red Devils in two straight games giving to ■them the Int. B. Ready store. Mr. and Mrs. Doh Ankers and family of Barrie were weekend guests with Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hodgins. Mrs. Oscar Hodgins, who lias been seriously ill in her home, is steadily improving ‘but is still confnied to her 'bed. The interior of the Anglican Panish Hall is being redecorated so Sunday School and junior con­ gregation were 'held In the base­ ment last Sunday. Mrs, Irving Gibson and Mrs. H. E. Lankin spent last weekend in Windsor, the guests of Mrs. Lankin’s sister, Mrs. William Ostricker, who is on the sick list. Local Explorers Complete Project The E x p 1 o r a t i o n "Serving Others in our Community" was ■completed at the Expedition of •the Lucan-Olandebpye Explorers on Monday evenfng', April 9. It •was decided 'that the offerings taken during this Exploration-— $6.00—should be forwarded to the Mission Board in Toronto, to assist in sending a food parcel. A new version of the "Virginia Reel" was, taught by Counsellor Iva Hodgins and the worship service was taken by Counsellor Kae Haskett. During the bsuiness period a report op the "Bunny Tea” was given, proceeds 'being $39.30. The graduation ceremony for the six girls going into C.G.J.T, will be held 'in the very near future. Several of the Explorers fin­ ished their glass painting and framed their pictures, taking ■them home most proudly. Men s Group Treats Ladies The Men’s Club of the Lucan United Church held their annual Ladies’ Night banquet in the church parlors last Wednesday night when 75 members and guests sat down together. Mr. Alex Young chaired the meeting. Mr. Harold Whyte proposed the toast to the ladies'‘•and Mrs. Alex Young responded. Guest artists on the program were Mr, D. H. Webster, who spoke; Miss Joan Mackenzie, Who accompanied Mr, D. G. Ham­ ilton on his trumpet. All were from the London Bible Institute. Groups Plan Safety Drive The Lions Club, Village Coun­ cil, Arena Board, Legion, School Board And Home and School As­ sociation are* sponsoring a safety drive at 'the Community Centre ;»ext Friday, April 20. A parade of wreckers with •wrecks, ambulance, hearse and school children will leave the school at <11 a.m. There will be •psychological driving tests, after­ noon and evening. At 8 p.m. there will 'be a num­ ber of films Shown with H. W. •Whyte chairing the meeting, On­ tario Provincial Police and Con­ stable Don Laughton will be the speakers. The object of 'the drive will be no violations 'of traffic code ■by residents of Lucan and com­ munity for the next six months. Arrangements have been made for a car cheek in Lucan. Juniors Hear Speaker A meeting of the Junior Farm­ ers and Junior Institute was held at the home of Mr. David Henry last Monday night. A. Mac- kesy officiating. Pallbearers were Thomae Mi'te ehell, Leo Charron, Joseph Mc­Laughlin, Joseph Whalen, Chas. Whalen and Michael Toohey. •Daughter of the late William and Rachel Casey, Miss Casey was born on Con. 6, Biddulph. As a registered nurse, she prac­ ticed for a number of years in London (before going to The House of Providence. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Paul Klem (Maggie), of Chicago. Teachers Meet The staff of the Lucan Public School attended the April meet­ ing of the Biddulph and North London Teachers’ Association which was 'held in Mrs. R. Gled- hill’s school In London Township last Tuesday, Mr. Ken Moir, -president of the Association and the Granton ■principal, was the speaker. Exemplify First Degree The degree team of the Agnes Watson Memorial Lodge 1JL67, Woodham, attended the regular meeting of Victoria Lodge 387 and exemplified the first degree. The guest soloist was Mrs. Hebei1 Davis. Mr. H. B. Elliot, a resident here and principal of the Lucan Public 'School, 'is a patient in St. Joseph’s Hospital, where he underwent ah operation last week. Mrs. Charlie Carter is still a patient in St. Joseph’s Hospital. On Tuesday she was 83 years old. Mr. Jack Harrison held a very successful auction sale of stock and Implements on Tuesday. The farm was not sold at the sale. Mr. and Mrs. Harrison and fam­ ily plan 'to reside in Aylmer where he will operate a radiator repair shop and drive a school bus. .
