A group representing major
organizations of Exeter express
ed favour fox* the formation of a
igirls and boys band at a meet
ing in the town hall Friday night
last week to discuss the quest
ion,
Liens representative Jack
iSmith said he felt a juniox* band
■would fill part of 'the extra time
left to boys and girls of the
town.
Re-creation Director Doug
Smith thought it was in line with
a balanced recreational program
for the town, meeting a need
that organized sports could not.
Mrs. Harold IS t u r fe i s said,
“There must be lots of musical
talent in the (community which
could be brought out through
the formation of a band.”
Representing the Legion
Ladies’ Auxiliary, Mrs, Max Har
ness felt that without a band
Exeter would be losing some of
the tradition attached -to Canad
ian towns.
With these opinions, the group
went on to affirm Exeter Coun
cil's choice of committee named
previously to form a band, and
suggested that the committee
look aftex* the details to promote
the idea.
Chairman of the committee is
Cecil Wilson. Other members are
Don Easton, Norman Walper,
Harold Preszcator and (Mayor
P-oo ley.
Mr. Wilson assessed the town’s
present band equipment and in
struments at about $3,000. He
felt that -class musical instruc-
fioXL ■could foe given local children
at a low enough rate to make it
easy for all who might foe in
terested. A -grant of $300 is
available as voted several years
ago by Town Council.
There was little enthusiasm for
the suggestion that an attempt
foe made to revive the old civic
‘foaj|ii.
