' —T-A Photo Huron WMS Presbyterial Hears Returned Missionary presbyterial meeting of the United Church Women’s Missionary Society at James St. Church Miss Grace Patterson of Thamesford retired missionary and -educationalist of -Central In­ dia and Rev. C. Krug, iBelgrave, were guests speakers -at the tilrir- ty-first annual meeting of Huron Presbyterial of the Women’s Mis­ sionary Society held in James S't. church on Tuesday. ;"It has grown -up sin-ce 1917 when I first went to Kharua, In­ dia, and found a few Christians rescued from -the famine of 1900- 190-2 carrying oh” -said Miss Pat­ terson in -referring .to the church. She -paid tribute to early mis­ sionaries -and traced the develop­ ment in education in hospitals and in evangelisjn. “No other organization in the Christian church in Huron County could fill the auditorium of James -St. -Church on a sipring afternoon and ministers and lay­ men know it,” said Rev. Krug who conducts -a TV program, each afternoon over CKNX-TV and was formerly professor of Mt. Allison -University. i George Walker Horseshoe Pitcher An av.id horseshoe pitcher, George TV.. “Pat” Walker died suddenly from a heart -attack at his home on William fit., Satur­ day, in his eightieth year. Mr. Walker was president of the lopal horseshoe -club for seve­ ral years and helped to organize numerous tournaments with other clubs -in the district. He played several games on -the local courts the day -before he died. He was born lin Us'borne Town­ ship on Highway N-o. 4 and after his marriage to Leno-re Sanders o-f Stephen, they farmed in Ste­ phen township until Mrs. Walker’s 'death in 1949. In 19-50 he retired to and was a member of Church of England. Surviving are two Myrtle, wiho made her home with him, and Ethel, Mrs. Fred Kerr of Crediton. Funeral services were conduct­ ed Monday by Rev. N. D. Knox from -the Hopper-Hockey funeral home with interment in Exeter cemetery. Pallbearers were Gordon and Harold Penhale, Al joe and Fred C-ulbert and Emerson and Don Penhale. “We live in -a time of -tre­ mendous turmoil—-we face des­ perate times and only as God’s spirit can be released and touch the hearts of our national leaders can another great catastrophic crisis -be averted,” contended Mr. Kruig. Two members of' James St. Afternoon Auxiliary to be named were appointed to t-he resolution committee for 19 57; Mrs-. Two minute reports of “What we did in 1955” were given by various secretaries- at the morn­ ing session. The treasurer re­ ported the allocation for 1955 of $2-1,600 had Ibeen exceeded and for 1956 the allocation was raised to $2-1,900. Mrs. Des Jardins presided for the sessions. McKELLAR Find Choking Kills Victim -A coroner’s jury found Friday that Kar.1 Anderson, 25, of Dash- wood, “died from asphyxiation due to Inhalation of vomit caused by overindulience of alcohol.” Th-e yourfg traffic victim was found thrown from his car in a ditch near Dashwood Sunday af­ ternoon, April 1, He was travel­ ing west, alone in his ear, when -it went -out of control and veered into the. south ditch of Highway 83. The car rolled through the highway fence into a field. The vcitim was found shortly after by neighbours. Among 'those who testified at the inquest, held in Dashwood Men’s Club Rooms, were Richard Ayotte, Teeswajter, one of two travellers which the victim had driven ito Exeter to assist -them when their car broke down near Dashwood; Dr. F. J. Bufcson, who was called to attend the de­ ceased; and OPP Constable Cecil Gibbons, who 'investigated. ■Coroner Dr. J. -C. Goddard, of Hensall, p resided. John Mason, 70 Dies In Toronto After a lengthy illness, John Mason died at his ‘home in To­ ronto-on Easter 'Sunday, ^ipril 1, in his seventy-first year. ■ A former resident of Parkhill, Dashwood -and Grand Bend, he was well known lin the district. He worked with -George Thom­ son on construction work for 25 years and iby coincidence died on Mr. Thomson’s eighty-first birth­ day. -On June 6, 1946, he married Mrs. Bessie Thomson, Parkhill, and they have resided in Toron­ to ever since. ■Funeral'services were conduct­ ed Tuesday-, April 3, and inter­ ment was in Park Lawn Ceme­ tery, Toronto. Pall-bearers were three nephews, Tom Baird, Arn­ old Mason and Delbert Mason, of -Grand Bend; and thhree step- gnandoliild-ren, Archie Linton, Jim Enright and Lome Wood. McCloy, Toronto, -their grandchildren Cathy, Jimmy and ChiHstina who apant Easter week with them returned home. •Hemphill, Lon- guest with Mrs- M-cKinnon of Crash Into River, Dad, Son Escape Clarence Reid and his tson Jerry, 13, escaped injury when their, five ton truck jumped a bridge abutment, fell -eight feet and smashed into a river bank in Hibbert Township Thursday afternoon. The vehicle left the road after hitting a soft -spot and the steer­ ing locked. Mr. Reid said front wheels and axle were sheared off in force of the crash. When he saw what was about to happen, Mr. Reid is aid he mov­ ed from in front of the steering wheel of the -truck, which was forced back against the seat. His son was thrown -clear when the right hand door wrenched open. A -load of gravel in the truck was thrown over the cab into the river. Damage to the 1950 model which was a complete wreck was estimated at over $1,000. 'Strat­ ford OPP officers investigated. Veteran Gardener Auxiliary Speaker Art Davies, The Old Vet. Davey Born In England ■William Louis Davey, BS, 4W Tuesday at the Heywood Nunsing Home. He was -born in Fnstaid and came to Cana4a when a young man. He farmed on the Goshen Line in Stephen twp. until 1941. Since then he has made his home with relatives and more recently with Mr. and Mrs. l/ewis Johns of Usborne. He attended the Uni­ ted Church. He never married. ISui-viving are one brother, Richard, over 90 years of age in South Huron Hospital, one sis­ ter, Mrs. Mary Staley in London, .and "several nieces and nephews.
