Kirkton’s Garden -Party, Hensall Kinsmen’s Bean Festival and Exeter Kins men’s Dominion Day Celebration continued to flourish. Hensall Girl Guides’ pantomine -was a highlight in that centre. Recreation Exeter’s Senior Citizens held the spotligt in recreation activi ties. This group has proven the most popular in the recreation program. Summer swimming and playground activities, under Rec reation Director Doug' Smith, were popular; Easter and Christ mas programs for children were organized. Hensall held a success ful playground this year and continued with its minor hockey and ball activities. Elections Earl Campbell, reeve of Hay Township, became the first man in history to win the. county wardenship by acclamation, He ended a long municipal career after a successful year as head of the county. Nominations throughout the area indicate there remains a serious lack of willingness to accept responsibil ity in almost all municipalities. Four elections were held for mayor and reeve chairs but there was difficulty filling council seats. Exeter The town ran into a number of crises during the year. Court action by ratepayers living near the dump forced council to clean up the refuse area. Another dry summer emphasized the need for immediate action to augment water supply. It was -believed a cattle beast died from river pul- lution caused by sewage in town drains and this sparked action towards a treatment plant. The town built two new drains, one to service the new grain elevator, and repaved Huron and Welling ton streets in what may be the start of an annual paving pro gram. Development of Riverview Park was started. The Area Grand Bend was swamped by crowds exceeding 20,000 over the hot weekends; the resort’s lead ers continued to pursue a policy of cleaning up and improving the village to make it more at tractive. Announcement of expansion in the coach works was the high light of progress in Hensall. The plant, which now hires 100- men, enjoyed record sales and pro duction, through the year. The company donated a trailer for a' raffle which helped the commun ity pay off its arena debenture for the year. The Ansable River Conserva tion Authority employed its first full-time field officer in Harold Hooke, a university graduate in forestry, who helped spur the conservation program, particular ly the Usborne dam. Tom Pryde, of Exeter, success fully defended his seat in the Ontario legislature against a vigorous campaign waged by a new entry in the political ring, Professor James Scott, of Sea forth, who was the opposition’s unofficial critic in the education al field. hjail service by truck was in augurated following complaints over erratic and inconvenient de- livery by train. Sports These were the sports high lights: SHDHS basketball teams won four tri-school titles; two boys’ -teams reached the purple bowl. Zurich Flyers wen Group Four hockey championship. Exeter Mohawks reached the finals of the WOAA Int. “A” playoffs against Goderich. Ex eter Fee Wees were semi-finalists In Goderich’s Young Canada tournament.
