T JEWELLER Yuletick mmom, we wiehyau 1 a rich abundaaea •( health happineee and aoateatweat. JACK John Webster v * THS TIMES-ADVOCATE, EXETER, ONTARIO, THURSDAY MORNING. DECEMBER tt, WM •wwwwiTtT W Rockets Here Friday Night Mohawks Gain Three-Point Lead; Forest, Milverton Register Upsets Even though they played only one game this week, Mohawks gained a safe hold on first place in the WOAA Major Group With a three-point lead over the rival Rockets, it’s the most comfort able margin the Tribe has enjoy-, ed for over a month. Mohawks trimmed the battling Milverton Royals 8-5 in a see saw contest Saturday night to post their ninth victory pf the season. Their game against Gode rich Monday night was postponed because of snow. The Rockets, with two games, had the opportunity to overtake the tribe but they were victims pf the strengthened cellar dwell ers—Forest Lakesides and Mil verton Royals. Forest clipped the Rockets 6-3 and Milverton, finally hitting its stride, trounc ed them 10-2. Rockets lost Keith Moffatt, ■front-line right winger, to Wat ford in a deal similar to the .Harry McEwan case for Exeter. Watford, who joined the Big- Eight group this year, claimed Moffatt, who hails from that town, and he has gone back to coach the team there.. Replacement for Moffatt, al lowed by the group, is a wiry little winger who is well known to district fans. He is Len Gaud ette, who played with Aylmer last year and enjoyed a big sea son with Lucan Irish in 1953- 54. -Gaudette was Urena -manager and recreation director in Lucan that year and placed second to teammate Ed Rowett in Cyclone League scoring race. Gaudette will be in action here Friday night when Rockets meet Mohawks in an important rub ber game between the two clubs. Besides being a strategic game as far as league leadership is concerned, the Friday night game will -break the deadlock between these rivals who have split their two contests this season. Mo hawks clobbered the Royals 12-3 here in the opening game but the Strathroy crew returned the insult via an 8-1 count a" week later. Forest Lakesides scored two upsets this week. Besides down ing Strathroy on the Rockets’ home ice, the Lakesides edged ■Goderich Sailors 5-4 on Tuesday night. The Forest victories and the big Milverton win over Strathroy confirms predictions of officials that the league is tightening into one of the hottest races seen here in many years. There isn’t a club in the .circuit which can ha dub bed a weak sister at this point* Mohawks will play three games over .the Christmas-New Year season, After Friday night’s con test here, the tribe will go to Milverton on Tuesday, Decem ber 27, and you can bet your bottom dollar that will be the battle of the year, The Royals are definitely not happy over losing four games to Exeter, par ticularly the last two which have been as close as you can -get ’em- On January 3, Mohawks will entertain Goderich Sailors in the local ice house. Lanky Larry Likes Royals Milverton Royals will be wish ing 'they’d, never heard 'of Larry Heideman. The lanky centreman scored his second hat trick of the season on Royal’s.ice .Saturday night as he led Mohawks to an 8-5 vic tory over the hungry Milverton crew. Heideman, who consider- ed playing for the Royals before he joined Mohawks this fall, scored three goals against Mil verton on Nov, 24 when Mohawks won 4-2, By repeating the .feat Saturday night, he thwarted a determined Royals up their first win this season. Heideman scored goal on a beautiful solo rush from his own end midway through ithe third period. He took ft Mil verton passout from behind the Exeter net and manoeuvered two defencemen all the way down to the Royals’ blueline when he sunk a screened shot to the cor ner, Actually the 8-5 score doesn’t indicate the .close play q£ this contest. The clubs battled goal for goal until the last minute of play when Coach Red Loader scored twice on breakaways while Milverton was pressing around the Exeter net. M i d d 1 e-r a n g e sharpshoot ing helped Mohawks- post their ninth win of the season. Three of the tribe’s goals, inoludinig Heideman’s winner, . were bulls eye shots from just inside the blueline which - hit the corners of the net. Bill Oberle scored the first one .His Off the for * '♦ ♦** -7 hid to chalk over Exeter the winning after four minutes of play, high shot actually carommed two posts before lodging in twine. Don Gravett made it 2-0 Exeter at 17.28 when the puck slid by the Royals’ netminder, Bob Rabethige, after Gravett and McDermid collided and went sprawling in front of the net, McDermid’s blueline shot a minute later deflected into the Exeter net off a Mohawk player to make the count 2-1 at the bell. ■Goals iby Bob Toman, Murray Noble and Junior Dares, the scrappy little centreman from El mira, put Milverton, ahead in the third .period, Heideman’s two goals, both engineered by Bill Wharnsby, kept Mohawks in the running despite the handicap of three penalties including a 10- minute miscount to Glen Wiese, one of the three rearguards Mo hawks had in the lineup. ©on Gravett got his second —Please Turn To Page 6 f-1 8. !*• * « • • « * * f 11 * Fl « ita ♦ May d* bright and hating joys of Chtistmas • #surround you and yours,,.
