Buy And Use Christmas Seals Exeter Mohawks, displaying superior form and condition, have moved well out in front of the WOAA Major Group with three successive wins. The tribe has trimmed all the original clubs, in the first round of the. schedule. The tribe whipped Milverton 7”2 Tuesday night in a close checking duel with the scrappy Royals. On Friday night, Mo hawks survived a severe attack of penalties to wring a sweet 5- victory out of the champion Gode rich Sailors. The locals won the league opener against Strathroy 12-3 last Tuesday. Mohawks' early winning streak can be credited at least partly to Gift Ideas From T. C. The tribe’s better condition showed up in all games, particularly in the Gode rich contest when Mohawks suf fered a shortage of manpower. The first week of play shows, too, that Mcjhajvks have two of the top forward lines in the loop. The scoring power is in dicated by the scoring race which shows six men among the top 12 pointgetters in the league so far. Coach Red Loader leads the scoring parade with two goals and 10 assists. Linemate Bill Oberle,.who was almost cut fromq the tribe roster earlier in the season, lias caught on fire to top the league’s marksmen with eight tallies. His combination and trigger work with Loader and McEwen has drawn the plaudits of the crowd. Don “Boom-Boom” Gravett, who placed third in team scor ing last year, leads the junior line with five goals and three assists. With Larry Heideman setting up the plays, this line may give the other a run for its money in scoring figures. Although they’ve already spent 44 minutes in the penalty box, the tribe’s defence is the strong est it lias ever been. Earl Barton and “Black Jack” Dwyer have the hitting power Mohawks need ed and with Glen “Rocky” Wiese, they’ve been able to hold their own despite their lack of num bers. Recreation Director Doug Smith joined the roster for the first time Tuesday night to give the club four rearguards. Work of Gar Baker in the nets lias been outstanding so far and if the local schoolteacher main tains his pace, he’ll stand a good chance ot> copping Gerry 'Smith’s goaltender’s trophy. Moliawks play two away games this week—Thursday liight' in Milverton and Saturday night in ’Strathroy. Next Tuesday night, Goderich Sailors will play their first game on Exeter ice and the champions will be seeking revenge for the tribe’s victory Friday night. The largest crowd of the season should be out to this contest, because there will be no love lost between these two rivals. Although both sides appeared equally rugged, Referee Gus Bous- sey saw most of Mohawks’ mis demeanors but he failed to spot many Goderich sins. He had little help from neophite Ron Broome, of Seaforth, who was well out his class considering his lack experience. The tribe was, shorthanded of the 20 minutes’ in the second period and played with only three men for five minutes in the mid dle and final stanzas. With Red Loader filling the gaps in de fence, Mohawks warded off Gode rich attack and came out off the hole to pocket a hard-earned vic tory. Bill Oberle scored two goals in the first period to give Mohawks a 2-1 lead after Billy MacDonald scored for Goderich in the cond minute of play. Jack Meriam tied it up for Sailors early in the second Red Loader put Mohawks front again at 5.36 MacDonald scored his second goal of the night at 14.01 to deadlock the count. It appeared that Mohawks would have to spend the rest of the night protecting their net but the penalty parade stopped^ half way through the third to give the tribe a chance to catch its breath and reorganize. “Boom” Gravett broke the ten- sioA at 13.38 when his rolling shot took ae crazy hop over Gerry Hes se’s glove into the net. Harry McEwan salted on a beautiful Oberle. Earl Barton time in the cooler with five pen alties. Rocky Wiese and Oberle each received the gate three times.
