They should try to make the schools more attractive and modern. As for the governments, muni­ cipal, provincial and federal, if they could give higher grants and more scholarships to help teachers to become better equipped and to encourage young people to become teachers who cannot fin­ ance the training. In answer to question 2 as to what rural communities and in­ terested groups can do to over­ come the teacher shortage the group felt if rural organizations would take more interest in their school and sponsor Christmas concerts and parties to help the teacher and recommend better facilities in the schools the teach­ ers might be encouraged to stay. Contrast 'Contrasts between the modes of transportation -and the mill 40 years ago and today is illus­ trated in these two pictures of the building which houses Cann’s Mill Ltd. main office and feed bu-siness. The picture on the left was taken in 19 IP when the mill was owned by the Harvey Bros., Thomas and Joseph, and was called The Exeter Roller Mills Co. In the top picture, showing the mill today, it will be noticed that the chimney has been moved, an addition constructed on the north side, a front showroom erected, dumping facilities placed in the yard and advertising material painted on the sides of the build­ing. James Low, Mrs. Low ai;d Penny visited with Mrs. T.’ Din- ney over the weekend before leaving for St. Hubert, Que., on Monday. Miss Bessie Yelland fell at her home on Wednesday morning last and fractured her right arm at the elbow. The fracture was reduced at South Huron Hospital. A united effort on the part of every organization in cthe church resulted in a very successful fowl supper in the new parlors of James Street United Church last Wednesday night. The attend­ ance was 650 and the proceeds of $800 will be added to the fund for equipping the new kitchen. Mrs. John Stevenson, of Thorn­ dale, spent the past week with Mrs. Melville Hern. Mr. Albert Davis, of Cart­ wright, Man., visited this week with Mr. and Mrs; - William Horney. Mr. Davis and Mr. Horney haven’t seen each other for 50 years. iSgt. and Mrs Denroche and Debbie Louise, left Wednesday on their return trip to their home in Aishihik, Yukon, after spend­ ing their vacation with Mrs. Defi- roche’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell accompanied them and plans tQ visit .his brothers and relatives FIGURE SKATING STARTS SATURDAY—Instruction fbr members of the Exeter Figure Skating Club will start tins Saturday at the local arena. Peter Firstbrook, London pro­ fessional, has been appointed instructor again this year. He formerly skated with Barbara Ann Seott. The local club is hoping for a membership of around 100. Pentecostal WMC Meets In Lucan The -October W.M.'C, meeting was held at the home of Mrs. Harold Butler at Lucan. Mrs. Keith MacLaren presided and conducted the worship period as­ sisted by Mrs, T,hos. Jolly. The roll call was -answered by a verse of scripture with the word “La­ bor." Mrs. Butler addressed the meeting using the theme “Toiling in Rowing" based on the biblical story of “Jesus palming, the stormy seas." Mrs. Gerald Ham­ ilton read the prayer bulletin, During the business session it was decided ' to -hold the Novem­ ber meeting at the home of Mrs. T. Jolly and to have a shower of children’s clothing for 'the hope chest at the Mission Rest Home Presentation On Thursday evening last the Comrades class of James St. church held a social evening for Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Amy.
