Friday afternoon, destroyed the building along with a quantity of hay, turnips, grain and beans. A tractor, wagon and some stock were lost, The farm was worked by the owner’s son, Jack Simpson, who, with a helper, Jim Cook, -were forced to flee from the building when gasoline in the vehicle’s tank spilled and caught fire. Mr. Simpson escaped by slid­ ing down a hay chute into the barn’s basement and Mr. Cook was able to escape down the gangway. The fire, engine from RCAF 'Station Centralia and other help­ ers were able to save buildings close by. Mrs. Joe Simpson, with her son Lyle Simpson, of Exeter, were on their way home from Stratford when they were told the news. Hallowe’en Party John Herman Walls There passed away in McGilli­ vray Township on Monday, John Herman Walls, son of the late Thomas and Margaret Walls, in his seventy-second year, ■He had farmed in Biddulph Township until six years ago. He was a member of Lucan United Church and of Lucan I.O.O.F. ■Surviving besides his wife, the ■former Pearl Fallis, are one son, Eldon, at liofce; two daughters, (Margaret) Mrs. Donald Mossip, of Thorndale, and (Jean) Mrs. Renneth Clement, of Dorchester. The funeral service was held from the Murdy funeral home, Lucan, on Wednesday with inter­ ment i n St. James’ Cemetery, Clandeboye. Honor Rector’s Wife The Ladies’ Guild of St. James’ Church met at the home ■of Mrs. Ed Flynn. * Mrs, Andy* Carter, president, presided for the W.A. meeting. She gave an ac­ count of the West Middlesex Deanery meeting held at St. John- the-Divine Church, Arva, Tues­ day. Mrs. Jack Harrison presided for the Guild meeting when Mrs. Wagland was presented with a brass plaque on behalf - of the members. In replying, Mrs. Wag­ land invited the members to visit her in her new home at Oakridge Acres. Wadding: of a former resident Mr. and Mrs. Leslie B. Collins exchanged vows in the vestry qf Maitland Street Baptist Church, London. The former Eileen Boam, the bride is the daughter of Mr. Walter Barnett, London and the*, late Mrs. Barnett. The groom, a former resident o£ Clandeboye, is the son of Mrs. Edsel Collins, Clandeboye, and the late Mr, Col­ lins. Following a wedding trip to Toronto the couple will reside in London. The teacher, Miss Marion Thompson, and pupils of Clande- bye School, held a euchre party following the Hallowe’en 1 party on October 28 at the school. He . was introduced by Chief Constable Donald Laughton of Lucan and thanked by Coun­ sellor Rae Haskett. 'Prior to the program, the Ex­ plorers held a short business meeting during which the In­ itiation Ceremony was conducted by Counsellor Iva Hodgins. The following girls were initiated and received theii* pins: Sharon Blake, Sheila Donaldson, Clande­ boye; Ruth Cochrane, Coralyn Donaldson, Barbara Laughton, Nancy Haskett, Jean Marie Lan­ kin, Joan Whitehead, Janet Rehl, Judy Thomson, Ruth Frost and Margaret Armitage, of Lucan. Fete Rector And Family Prior to their departure their new parish at St. Martin’s, Oakridge Acres, near Byron, on November 1, Rev, J. F. Wagland and family were guests of honour at a large congregational social evening in Holy Trinity Church basement last Wednesday eve­ ning. Succeeding the Rev. L. C. Harrison, now of 'Dorchester, Mr, Wagland became Rector of Holy Trinity Church, Lucan, and St. James’ Church, Clandeboye, in June, 1952. During his short sojourft here he" has worked un­ tiringly, especially with the young people. He was superintendent of the Sunday School and taught the senior boys’ class. He organ­ ized a junior choir and, with the assistance of Mrs. Clarence Hardy, directed it, He revived the A.Y.- P.A. and started the League of Loyalty, Aided by the W.A. he formed a Little Helpers group. ' In the community Mr. Wag­ land will be greatly missed. He organized baseball and hockey church leagues. Foi* one yeax* he was secretary of the Home and School Association and he was keenly interested in Teen Town. He was also instrumental in the formation of Lucan’s first Credit Union. Mrs. Wagland will be greatly missed in W.A. work where she had charge of the Study Book. Philip and Joyce were two of the most faithful League of Loyalty members. To show theii* apprecia­ tion the members of the con­ gregation presented the . family with a chesterfield and money. Mr. Wilson Hodgins, the people's warden, made the presentation and k£rs. T. ’C. McFarlane, presi­ dent of the Woman’s Auxiliary, gave the address, expressing the regret of the whole congregation at their leaving. Mr. U. F. Stanley was chair­ man foi* a program consisting of sing-songs, choir numbers, solos by Mr. Charles Haggar of the senior choir and Frank Egan of the junior choir and Mr. Wag­ land, tap-dances by‘Judy Haskett and Mr. James Hodgins. On Tuesday evening at a sup­ per .meeting the junior choir pre­ sented Mr. Wagland with a small ash stand and Philip with a pen­ cil-case. Bob Watson, one of Lucan’s bal land hockey players who had been employed at the Revington Meat Market, has accepted a po­ sition with the A. & P. at Chat­ ham. Mr. Barney Cunningham, of Ilderton, who recently celebrated his ninety-first birthday, called on Mr. and Mrs. Jack Casey last week. Mrs. C. W- Stanley and boys,, of Toronto, were Sunday visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Harold Stan­ ley. A draw for a pink wool blanket was won by Mr. Milton Hodgins, of Denfield, and the draw for the electric clock was won by Mrs. C. Smith, Lucan. ■Fred Culbert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Aljoe Culbert, left last Mon­ day for Ridgetown to attend a 21-week course at the Western Ontario Agricultural School. Harold Frost, who fell off Mr. Harold Hodgins’ barn six weeks ago while hunting pigeons, is back in St. Joseph’s Hospital again. Last Thursday he under­ went an operation .on his wrist. Mrs. C. H. Porter is spending a few days in Toronto. Miss' Hattie Hodgins is visit ing her cousin, Mr. Alfred gins, of Granton. Mrs. Martin Rowell; who died in London on Wednesday, Octo­ ber. 26, in her seventy-sixth year, lay at rest at the C. Haskett and Son funeral home, Lucan, until Friday when the Rev. A. H. Har­ rison, of Ilderton, conducted a private funeral service. Inter­ ment was in Medway cemetery. Mrs. Rowell, the former Lillie A. Wilkin, was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Wilkin. She was born in London Township where she spent most of her life. Besides -her husband, she is survived by one sister, Mrs. Cliff Trueman, of Truro, N.S., and two brothers, Fred Wilkin, of Van­ couver, and Wylie Wilkin, of Saskatchewan. Masonic Dinner The Rnotty Pine catered to a large attendance at the Masonic turkey dinner and dance in the Lucan Community Centre last Thursday night. The Casa Royal Orchestra, of London, provided the music. Mr. Bob Murray was chairman. Ben Lucas, cartoonist, and his pianist entertained. Reports on the Home and School Regional Conference at Beal Technical School, London, were given by the secretary, Mr. Bert Thompson, who reported on the banquet speaker, Mr. Alec Wingfield, and the recording secretary, Mrs. J. B. -Ready, who reported on the three workshops. During the business session it was decided to donate $25 tor wards the annual Hallowe’en Frolic for the children, to be held in the Community Centre, on Monday. Recreation Report By STEVE STOREY The Lucan Irish started the new hockey season off right last Friday by whipping the Seaforth Hurons 8-5. The Irish have a few rough edges to be polished, bat­ on the whole we believe they will ■be alright. The Forest Lakesides will be visitors on Lucan ice Friday, No­ vember 4. The Lakesides are re­ ported to be packed this year and will g^ve the Irish all they can handle. Mrs. Nicholson has generously consented to instruct a class in the fine art of leathercraft, new course will start within next few weeks. Judge Hallowe’en Posters Hallowe’en posters made Grade 7 and 8 pupils were brought to the hydro' office last Tuesday for judging by Mrs. Charles Corbett, Mrs. Steve Storey and Miss Lina Abbott. The posters were exceptionally well done for public school children. 'First prize was awarded to Terry Culbert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mel Culbert; second to David Whyte, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Whyter, and third to Joan Young, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clar­ ence Young. Baptismal Service Two children were baptized in Holy Trinity Church by the Rev. J. F. Wagland last Sunday eve­ ning—Renneth James Freeman, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Free­ man, and Anita Lucinda Hodgins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Austin Hodgins. Godparents for the for­ mer were Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Young, of London, and for the latter, Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton Hodgins and Mrs. Vincent Hod­ gins. W.M.S. Sponsor Film Mrs. John McLean’s group of the United Church W.M.S. spon­ sored the film “The White Fa­ ther, Bella Bella,” in the Lucan United Church last Wednesday evening. It depicted the story of Dr .and Mrs. Darby, missionaries for 40 - Indians, a joint and Evening Auxiliary in the church parlors. This was presid­ ed over by vice-president Mrs. ■George Paul. ' .
