SIZING FROM
THE
Aluminum was named by a man
who never saw it. In 1807 the
great scientist Sir Humphrey
Davy decided that alumina had
a metallic base, but failed to find
a way to extract the metal. But
he went ahead anyway and
christened the unseen metal
"aluminum". Later' he changed
his mind and re -named it alu-
minium. Both versions are
still used.
Wonder if the English scientist
ever dreamed of the day when,
in far -oil Canada, millions of
hydro -electric horsepowerwould
unlock the riches of alumina to
produce more than 500,000 tons
of aluminum a year?

What Happens
What happens to the phosphate
fertilizer that crops don't use?
According to a University of Wis-
consin bulletin it terms phosphate
crystals that .don't wash away
very easily.
Only a small amount of phos-
phate fertilizer finds its way into
the Crop during a season, the re-
searchers point out. Most of it
reacts with the soil itself, form-
ing insoluble crystals. But a farm-
er searching for these crystals
wouldn't be able to find them.
They are so small that it takes
the high-powered electron mie-
roscope to ,see thein.
Magnified 70,000 times, a typ-
ical crystal appears to be about
2t inches long and one inch wide.
A fly's wing magnified the sante
amount would cover four foot-
ball fields.
Can't Get Phosphate
This crystal formation explains
why rain doesn't leach phosphates
from the soil, while other min-
erals like potassium and nitrogen
are rapidly lost. And the crystals
also make it more difficult for
plants to get the phosphate. It's
like money in a safe after you
lose the combination. You can't
be robbed, but you do not enjoy
the use of the money.
The researchers hastened to add
that the use of phosphate fertil-
izer is very profitable .for farm-
ers even though much of the
phosphate is tied up in these
crystals. The small percentage
used by plants generally brings
a higher crop yield that gives a
good return on the fertilizer in-
vestment. The phosphate in cryst-
als remains slowly available to
crops and thus gives some ad-
ditional returns.
Now that the fate of the un-
used phosphate is known, scien-
tists may find it easier.. to in-
crease phosphorus fertilizer a-
vailability through liming and
other .soil management practices.
