School Loses Track 7.i'tle,
Girds Win Championships
South Huron District High
School, which has held the tri-
school track and field champion-
ship three of the last five years,
lost it Thursday afternoon by a
bare 11 points to St. Marys Col-
legiate Institute.
Athletes from the stone town
captured the title for the first
time since 1950 with a score of
129. Exeter •amassed 118 points;
Mitchell collected 73.
South Huron girls edged St.
Marys 56-5Q but the boys lost
79-G2.
Keith Lovell, South Huron
senior boys' champion, set the
only record .of the meet. He add-
ed eight inches to the pole vault
mark with a jump of 10 feet,
six inches,
In individual standings, the
district high school won two
championships and three runner-
up honors. Frances Green and.
Allison Clarke captured inter-
mediate and junior girls' titles;
Keith Lovell won second in senior
boys, Dave Beeching tied for
runner-up in intermediate boys
and Jane Farrow placed in a
three-way deadlock for second
spot in intermediate girls.
St. Marys won all three boys'
championships. W inners were
Bill Price, senior; Harold Burgin,
intermediate; and Bill Campbell,
junior.
Lloyd Edighoffer, of Mitchell,
won the senior girls' title.

Bend, won her title with firsts in
'the softball speed throw and
basketball speed throw and a
third in the 75 -yard dash. Jane
Farrow, of Exeter, teamed with.
Frances and Darol Tuckey in the
speed throws to tie for second.
A 14 -year-old grade 10 stu-
dent, Allison Clarke, placed well
in front of .her division with firsts
in the speed throws and seconds
in the dash and broad jump.
Other South Huron winners in
the various divisions were:

Keith Lovell—firsts in pole
vault and mile run, second in
half -mile, third in shot put.
Jules Desjardine—first in run-
ning broad, second in 100 -yard
dash, thirds in 220 -yards and
hop, step and jump.
Ted Smith—second in 22D,
thirds in 100, running broad.
Phil 'Charrette—second in 440 -
yard run.
Charles Kernick—second in the
shot put.

In First Week Bowling

Whitewashes were popular in Poppettes Cats
men's bowling league. Seven of
the nine games were won 7-0. Tops In Ladies
Top team score last week was
trundled by the Jets who posted
3,203 with help of Nichols' 743
triple.
Monday night, the Tradesmen,
led by George Glendinning with
625, racked up a total of 3,385
points. 'Doug Hughson of the
Strikes bowled top triple of 719.

Delhi defeated West Lorne in
a best -of -three final last Week to
win the OBA Bantam "C" cham-
pionship—the title Exeter Ban-
tams were gunning for before
they 'were disqualified by the As-
sociation.
/Delhi won the series 7-5 and
13-3. The Exeter team defeated
West Lorne 18-0 and 8.5 after
losing the'first game 6-3.
Local sports observers feel Del-
hi and Exeter would have stag-
ed a bang-up battle for the title
had the local team been allowed
to continue,
Exeter Was eliminated from the
the Competition because proof of
age fbr one player had not been
established with the Association.
West Lorne entered the protest
after the third game of the series
here,
The ladies' bowling league
started its 1955-6 season with 20
teams. The Pin Poppettes and
Alley Cats each won seven points
in the first week of bowling.
The cup and 'saucer winners
were Naida Francois with high
triple 707 and Dot Bird for high
single -280.

4-H Teams
To Compete
Fifty-four 4-H members from
27' clubs in Huron will be repre-
senting the county at the provin-
cial 4-H Inter -Club competitions
at O.A.C., Guelph next week.
The group will include two-man
teams from eight beef calf clubs,
three dairy calf clubs, six swine
clubs, five grain clubs, three
poultry clubs, a tractor mainten-
ance club and a 441 forestry club.
These teams will compete against
similar representatives from other
counties.

Mohawks Set
Practice Sked
Exeter Mohawks, aiming at .the
WOAA "A" title this year, will
begin a gruelling practice sched-
ule this weekend.
Playing -coach .lied Leader, who
wants his ;men in top .condition
before the season opens, will put
them through two-hour practice
sessions every night next week
except Wednesday and Saturday.
The club has booked time at Lu -
can Arena until the local arena
gets ice.
With several promising new
forwards signed up, the club Is
now interested in r ea rg .0 a n d
strength. A number of .defence -
men will be tried out in practices
next week.
(Practice hours include; Sunday
1-3, Monday 9-11, Tuesday 8-10,
Thursday 8-10, Friday 9-11 and
Sunday 1-3. Club officials say
fans will be welcome to watch
the workouts.
Ticket sales for the booster
banquet on Wednesday, October
19 have been going well, accord-
ing to President Lloyd Cushman.
