Watch Costs Of Gov't
Weekly Editors Told
Five hundred editors from
across Canada meeting at the
annual convention of the Canad-
ian Weekly Newspapers Associa-
tion in Vancouver this week,
were urged to devote greater 'at-
tention through their editorial
pages to the costs of government.
W. H. Cranston, editor of The
Midland Free Press Herald and
chairman of the . Assoeiation's
parliamentary committee told the
weekly editors that the total tax
income of local, provincial and
federal governments in Canada.
was equivalent to almost $1,500
per dully employed person.
"It may be difficult generally
for 'weekly publishers and editors
to analyze and prescribe Por tax
bilis Ona large scale, but most
of the symptoms are present in
local goverizinent and we ;believe
newspapers, as journals net only
only Of news and opinion •but of
research, have a responsibility to
probe deep into the problem,"
Mr. Cranston said,
"The extent Of indirect tette
tion and of 'pass -along grants
which . has characterized all levels
of government in recent years
has destroyed in no small de-
gree the clear 'buyer -seller rela-
tionship which, at One time,
marked the provision Of public
services to the electorate. Now it
is meet• difficult to isolate costs
of particular government 'tune•,
tions and, therefore, properly
'evaluate them."
Mr, 'Cranston said be believed,
increasing taxation was reflected
in Canada's inablity to compete
successfully in foreign export
markets.

The hours of departure for all
routes in the district are being

Citing an example, the postal
official said letters mailed in

The new truck schedule is the
