Plan To Show Hobbies
At Fair iNext Thursday
A display of women's hubbies
will feature the home department
of the local fair next Thursday.
Mrs. R. W. Kestle, director in
charge of this section, has asked
ladies of the community to ex-
hibit their hobbies to show others
what they are doing In their spare
time.
Again 'this year the home de-
partment features a special sec-
tion for New 'Canadian •handi-
craft.
Some of the novelty sections
should prove interesting. Prizes
are being awarded for the best
stuffed toy, something useful
made from something useless,
and the best dressed doll.
A children's birthday cake is
a naw section in the cooking com-
petition which features 'taking
from bread to doughnuts.
+The fair board is offering .spec-
ial prizes for the best displays of
home -canned products. Each dis-
play must contain 20 or more
items and is judged on quality,
variety and arrangement.

Begin Season
Main Street
Rev. Alex Rapson was the guest
speaker at the Monday meeting
of Main Street Evening Auxiliary.
He chose as his subject "What
it Means to the .a Disciple."
The program followed a .pot
luck supper. The devotional per-
iod was taken by :Stella Marshall
and Hilda Turnbull. A solo was
contributed by Miss Marilyn Bis-
sett. e
The president, Mrs. P. Merkley,
conducted the business meeting.
James Street
Mrs. 'Ross Taylor and her group
in the Evening Auxiliary of James
St. United Church planned and
presented the ,September meeting
on Monday evening.
A host roast beef sandwich sup=
per was served and was. followed
by the business meeting conduct-
ed by Mrs. Ralph •Batten. The
worship service was led by Mrs.
Ross Taylor and she was assisted
by 1Mrs. Ed,- Johns, Mrs. Sam
Hendrick and Mrs. Wm. Thom-
son.
A solo was contributed by Mrs.
Harold Sturgis. Mrs. Andrew Dix-
on introduced the new study for
1955-56. This is Home Missions
year and a study' will be made
of the church's work among New
Canadians and among Indians,
using the books "Coming Our
Way," 'No Vanishing Race" and
"Home Missions Digest."

Ford, TCA stewardess, no longer
lists blueberry pie as her favorite..
On a Toronto -to -Ottawa flight,
her Viscount plane hit an air -
pocket and dropped 30 feet just
as she was serving the pie to
passengers. The result: pie in the
sky, on the ceiling, in passengers'
hair, on the floor and on the
windows. It was Miss Ford's job
to make the plane neat and tidy
after the episode.

altar of James St, United Church,
Exeter when Dorcas Elizabeth,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed. iSii-
lery, Exeter +became the bride of
.Calvin Fraser s o n of +Mr. and
Mrs. Wesley Wein. .Crediton:
The Rev. Harold J. Snell 'offi-
ciated for the double ring cere-
mony.
Mr. Lawrence Wein„ uncle of
•the groom presided at the organ
and accompanied Mrs. Roy
Goulding, ,London, - aunt of the
groom, who sang "Because" and
"The Wedding Prayer."
Escorted by ; her father the
bride was lovely in a floor,length
gown of French, imported lace
and nylon tulle over 'bridal satin.
The snugly fitted lace bodice
featured on open V neckline, out-
lined by nylon and long •lily point
sleeves. The .billowing skirt was
of nylon tulle with inserts of
lace cascading down the (front
and back. Her headdress, a juliet
cap of nylon tulle dotted with iri-
descent sequins, held a matching
finger tip illusion veil. She car-
ried •a cascade of 'Better Time
Roses, and white baby mums with
red rose -bud tipped streamers.
Bridal Attendants
Mrs. Donald Davey, sister of
the bride, as. matron of honour,
chose a ballerina gown of ibe—
blue nylon tulle over taffeta, The
skirt featured inserts of lace and
the fitted bodice was completed
with.a Chantilly lace jacket, Her,
headdress was of ice -+blue ruf-
fled nylon dotted with irridescent
sequins and carried a cascade of
salmon pink flowerlets and sweet-
heart roses.
Her bridesmaids were her sis-
ter, Miss Patricia +Sillery and Mrs.
Gordon (Stone, sister of the groom,
dressed in iceblue gowns identi-
cal to that of the matron of hon-
or with matching headdress and
also carried cascades of salmon
pink 'flowerl`eis and sweetheart
roses. •
As flower girl, Dianne Stone,
niece of the groom /wore a floor
length gown of shrimp nylon tul-
le over tuffeta, dotted with blue
rose -buds with matching head-
dress, and wristlets. She carried
a miniature ,cascade of ice -blue
baby mums and sweetheart roses.
As ring bearer, Jimmie 1Gaveir
cousin of thea bride carried a white
satin ring cushion. Mr. Wilmer
Wein, •Crediton, cousin of the
groom was groomsman, Ushers
were Douglas 1Sillery, brother o;f
the bride and Ronald Wein brot-
her of the groom.
Church Reception
Receiving at the church par-
lours the 'bride's mother chose
a navy rayon matelasse dress dot-
ted with white and navy velvet,
featuring a flared skirt, a V
neckline inaerted with lace, with
navy and white accessories and
a corsage of Penocchio red roses
and 'white mums. The groom's
another, chose a Ticatina crepe
dress of congo green with honey
beige accessories and a corsage
of Talisman roses.
On their return from a trip
through the United States Mr.
and Mrs. Wein will make their
home in Exeter,
Guests for the wedding were
present from Exeter, Crediton,
Kirkten, •Staffa, London, Lefray,
Aylmer, Moncton, Hanover, King-
stoe, Detroit, .Pittsburgh and Ica-
kalbeka Fails.
Bride Elect Feted
Mrs. Ed. Siliery entertained at
a trousseau tea in honour of her
daughter, Dorcas, whose marri-
age took place in James St, Uni-
ted Church, Exeter, last Saturday,
Mrs. Siliery,. the groom's Math-
er, Mrs. Wesley Wein and the
bride elect received guests during
the afternoon and evening.

some of the recipes We have for

won a fifty dollar prize in Betty
Crocker's :',Recipe Sharing Con-
test" sponsored by General (Mills.
We knew you will be glad that,
in reply to •a letter from, Mrs.
Crocker, Betty Crocker said 'I
ani very happy that your local
newspaper is giving you the pp-
portunity to let your friends and
relatives learn about your good
fortune,'
This recipe for Mello -Nut Fudge
cake was tested in the Betty
Crocker kitchen and was judged
a prize winner by baking experts:

MELLO-NUT FUDGE CAKE
(Mrs. K. G. Crocker, Exeter)
3 oz. 'bitter .chocolate cut very
fine
g cup boiling water
1l cups sifted all-purpose flour
11 cups granulated sugar
tsp. salt
s tsp. baking powder
l tsp. soda
A cup shortening
cui buttermilk
1 tsp. vanilla
2 eggs 'unbeaten
18 marshmallows, cut in •half
1 cup nuts "cut fine
Method -=Put chocolate in mix-
ing bowl, pour boiling water over
It and stir until- melted, Cool.
Sift flour, sugar, salt, baking
powder and soda -into chocolate,
mixture. Drop in shortening. Beat
200 strokes by hand or 2 min-
utes in mixer set at low speed.
Add ibuttermilk, vanilla and eggs
and 'beat 200' strokes or 2 min-
utes at low speed. Bake in greas-
ed floured pan at 350° for 30-
40 • minutes. While cake is warm
press marshmallows on the top.
Spread with
Minute Boil Frosting
2 oz. 'chocolate
11 cups granulated sugar
7 Tbs. sweet milk
2 Tbs. shortening
2 Tbs. butter
1 Tb. corn' syrup
• g tsp, salt.
Bring to, a boil stirring for 1
minute. Cool to 'lukewarm. .Add
1 teaspoon vanilla. Beat until
thick. Cake can be baked in 8
;inch layer pans but for easier
handling an 8 by 12 inch pan
may be used.

1 teaspoon grated lemon rind
4 tsps. butter
1' cup white sugar

Mrs. R. E. Russell was hostess
at her summer cottage at Blake
on Thursday last for the iSeptem
tier meeting of the W. A:>,and
W.M.S. of Main St.' church,
Mrs. 'Glen McKnight, president,
conducted the W.A. sheeting when
plans were made for the fall
work, The date, for the annual
bazaar was set forOctober 29.
Mrs. R. Hopper took charge of
the devotional period and was as-
sisted by Mrs. B. Tuckey.
Mrs. R. Balkwill presided for
the W.NI,S. meeting. She reported
to the ladies on the School for
Leaders she had attended at Al -
me College, iSt. Thomas, the prev-
ious week. Mrs. +Balkwill was im-
pressed with the sehool, the
theme of which was "Christ in
Action." Mrs. Gordon Watt, Tor-
onto, of the Christian Steward-
ship department of the Dominion
Board conducted an intensive
study on the Book of 'Colossians.
Rev. Geo. Birtch, formerly of
Dundas Centre 'United Church,
London, also COndueted daily
Bible 'Study, Fellowship and ad-
dresses Iby missionaries on fur-
lbegh from various missionary
fields was a privileged feature.

2 eggs well beaten
3 'Tbs. lemon juice
2 Tbs. flour
4 Tbs, grapenuts (cereal)
1 cup milk
2 egg whites stiffly beaten.
Add lemon rind to butter and
cream well. Add sugar gradually
blending well. Add egg yolk and
Peat thoroughly. Add lemon juice
then flour, grapenuts and milk
mixing well, Fold in beaten whites
of eggs. Turn into greased 'bak-
ing dish and .place in pan of hot
water. Bake .in slow ;oven, 325°,
for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Serve
cold with cream if desired.

What a thrill we ;got last week
,when we received a letter from
Pauline (Godbolt) Dyck who lives
at Whitehorse, Yukon. She wrote
'Just a .little note to say I'm glad
you are going to start the 'Gram
column again. I sure look for-
ward to looking at it every week.'
She enclosed a recipe for cherry
bread which.. her family likes.
She finds it handy to have in the
house when company drops in.
CHERRY BREAD
(Mrs. Pauline Dyck)
1 cup brown sugar
21 tsp. baking powder
1 small 'bottle maraschino cher-
ries
juice from cherries with milk
added to make 1 cup
cap walnuts
cut cherries
.1 egg well 'beaten
2g cups bread flour
2 fib. butter. '
at4lx flour, sugar, salt, baking
powder and butter. Add remain-
ing ingredients. Let stand in a
warm place for 20 minutes. Bake
1 hour in moderate oven.
