greatest car letdown in
By Reg Armstrong
One of our salesmen came up with a
story the other day, a true one, that
must capture some sort of prize for the
years.
Some people will go to a lot of trouble to get a car
that's just a bit different, and a Los Angeles businessman
named Stau Siotkin was one of them—he really was.
Somehow, he's not saying just how, he managed to
smuggle a new Russian Pobeza, a four -door sedan, out of the
USSR. The Russians probably thought it was his small English
car that was boxed in a crate and loaded on a ship in Helsinki,
Finland.
•
Slotkin paid $1,500. plus tax and the shipping charges
to get Kis "different" car to Los Angeles. But when he drove
it down the street, no oue gave him a glance. The car looked
just like a 1939 American car, with the body style and dash-
board borrowed from one maker and the grille work from
another. The tires evea had the same tread as a well-known.
make.
Slotkin probably had fun and I hope it was worth the
money. Finding a car that's different is fun, and of course
the place to find such a wide range of cars, old and new, that
you're bound to see the "difference" you want is—you've
guessed it—right on our lot. Sorry, we're temporarily out of
Pobezas.
Next week I want to tell you how to choke a car—so
the bills won't choke you.

Will 'Take Over Lake .Smith
For :Fowl Sanctuary: Dixon.
A Prediction that the ?Losable
River Conservation Authority will
take over Lake Smith and pre-
serve it as a •wild life sanctuary
was made last week hy Andrew
Dixon, Exeter representative on
the Authority and chairman of the
public relations advisory board.
Speakiag to Exeter Kinsmen
Friday night, Mr. Dixon said this
project might be the next for the
Authority after the Pinery park
had been coMPleted. He predict-
ed action would be taken with-
in rive years,
"The Authority would like to
buy Lake Smith, prohibit shoot-
ing in the area, and encourage
wild life," the con,servationist
stated. Like the jack Minor sanc-
tuary, it would be developed into
a "wonderful" tourist resort. "It
would serve the area a lot 'better
that way than it would growing
onions."
The lake, laeated south of
Grand Bend in Bosanquet town-
ship, is now being drained by its
owner Dr. L. C. 'Hagmeier for
cultivation purnoses, It covers
several hundred .acres and thous-
ands of wild ducks, geese and
swan stop over on the lake dur-
ing their migration- north.
Mr. Dixon said there is still
some question over the owner-
ship of the lake. The original
grant of land to the Canada Cora-
pany did not include Lake ,Smith
and, unless some further nego-
tiations were made, the Canada
Company did not have the right
to sell the lake to the present
owner.
Mr. Haigmeier construed the

ing front the area steadily, It
may take several years before the
lake disappears, however.
First public Outcry against the
action was made several weeks

of the Ausable Authority, He said
the drain would "destroy one of
nature's finest wild life saactu-
arieS."
Mr. Dixon told Kinsmen the
Authority would have to have
public support behind !any move
to expropriate the lake and he
urged the club to .promote the
project.
