the Stanley Hall, consisted of

Lucan and Biddulph; reading of
minutes; auditor's report; report
of nominating committee; quest-
ion drawer and addresses by W.
S. McKay of the Municipal World,

son, chairman Ausable Conserva-
tion Authority,
The evening session began
with a banquet at the Memorial
Community Centre followed by
an address by the guest speaker,
W. A. Sutherland, county clerk
of Middlesex county. Mr. Suther-
land was introduced by Mr. Har-
old Corbett.
Tap-dancing, music and song
were presented by Miss Marilyn
Brownlee, Mr. and Mrs. John A.
McDonald and Mr. Walter Feesy,
Mrs. Wm. White
Born In Germany
Mrs. William White died on
Sunday, April 3, in her eighty-
fifth year, at the home of her
son, James, of Milton; with whom
she had been living for the past
11 months.
Mrs. White, the former Mar-
garet Hohlbein, was the daughter
of the late Francis and Margaret
Hohlbein and was born in Ger-
many.
The Murdy funeral home, Lu -
can, was in charge of the funeral
from her late home, Lot 4, Con-
cession $, Stephen township, on
Wednesday, Requiem high mass
was sung by Father A. F. Scalia!
at St, Peter's Church, Biddulph.
Interment was in St. Peter's
Cemetery. Her six sons were pall
bearers.
She is survived by six sons and
two daughters, John, of Parkhill;
Joseph, of Stephen township;
Hubert, of London; Anthony, of
•Detroit; James, of Milton; San-
ford, of Windsor; (.Sophrona)
Mrs. E. L. Black, of Bakersfield,
Calif., and (Alma) Mrs. W, Ma-
thews, of Detroit.
Her husband predeceased her
in May, 1933.

These are the words on many
lips these bays, and they are
really arousing much interest in
the Antique and Hobby Show
being sponsored by the .Lucan
Home and School Association on
Friday, April 15, from, 3 to 5 in
the afternoon and 7:30 to 9 in
the evening.
Some Of the more interesting
antiques are: an old sewing
machine, two types of spinning
wheels, one of the first victrolas
in the district, bedspreads, dishes
from 100 to 150 years old, wed-
ding gowns of ancient vintage,
and many, many others.
Children's hobbies include oil
painting, mecanno, coin and stamp
collections, hockey card collec-
tions, knitting and fancy work.
Adult hobbies, which are many
and varied, include oil paintings,
model aeroplanes and trains,
fancy work, smocking, wood-
working, mats and quilts.

Couple Celebrate
Golden Wedding
On Tuesday, March 29, Mr. and
Mrs. Joseph Linden celebrated
their golden wading 'anniversary
at the family homestead, Con-
cession 14, London township.
They were married 50 years
ago at the home of the bride's
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin
Matthews, •Denfield. Present at
the reception on Tuesday was the
bridesmaid, Mrs. George Hughes,
of Ailsa Craig, but the grooms-
man, Charles Shore, of Glen -
worth, was unable to be present.
Lucan Waiter
Found Injured
John Darling, 43 -year-old Lu -
can man, was found at 2:30 p.m.
last Sunday by Mrs, Margaret
Poole abo}lt three miles west of
Lucan, unconscious and •bleeding
from three bullet hales, one in
the forehead and two under his
right shoulder, The wounded man
was taken to St. Joseph's Hos-
pital but was later transferred
to Victoria Hospital for brain
surgery, and is still in critical
condition.
A .22 calibre automatic rifle
was found beside him.'with seve-
ral fired and loaded .cartridges
scattered on the ground. The car
was pulled to the side of the
road and the doer on the driver's
side was open. Lucan's Police
Constable, Gordon Whitehead,
suggested foul play was not to
be discounted.
Mr, Dar"ling is a waiter at the
Central Hotel and had been in
the habit of Sunday hunting.
PIctures Aid Library
With teen-age John Conlin
running the •projector, the pic-
tures shown at the Public School,
in aid of the 'junior library, last
Saturday night, were interesting
and instructive. They included
the war on want in Ceylon; road -
building in Labrador; the hot
springs in New Zealand; pottery
making and glass-blowing in
Mexico; frontier college life
among New Canadians, and a De-
troit -Montreal hockey game.
Mrs. Charles Grose and Mrs.
Tom Coursey were hostesses for
the seven -table euchre held in
the Coursey School last Thursday
evening. Prizewinners were Mrs.
'Charles Haggar, Mrs. Evan Hod-
gins, Mrs. Harold Coursey, Mr.
Harvey Hodgins, Lucan, Mr. H.
Stone, Mrs, Evan Hodgins . and
Mr. Harold Coursey.
The ..next euchre, to be held on.
April 14, will take the form of a
pot luck suppper, with Mrs. Har-
vey Hodgins and Mrs. harry
Stokes as hostesses.
Mr. Linden was born 84 years
ago at Birr, son .of Samuel and
Isobel (Ferguson). Linden, and
grandson of Archbishop Alexan-
der, Belfast, Ireland,
Mrs. Linden, '74, is a grand-
daughter of the late Captain
Squire Matthews, son of the first
Welsh settler in 'Upper Canada.
Mr. Linden has been a member
of the Henderson Lodge, A.F. &
A.M., Ilderton, for 56 years and
has his 50 -year jewel, He is a
life member of the National Lin-
coln Sheep Breeders Association,
having served four years as presi-
dent.
ressdent. His hobbies are raising
saddle and race horses. For 16
years he served on Denfield
School Board and is a member of
Birr Trinity Anglican Church.
A few years ago, the couple
retired from active farming.
They have three daughters, Mrs.
Archie Parsons (Alice), of Iien-
sall; Mrs. Joseph Carter (Mar-
garet), of Clandeboye, and Ver-
na, at hone; also six grand-
daughters and three grandsons.
Auxiliary Euchre .
The monthly euchre party of
the Ladies Auxiliary to the Can-
adian Legion was held in the
club rooms last Tuesday evening.
Prizewinners were Miss Marie
Morrow, Mrs, H. Bond, Mr. Har-
vey Hodgins and Mr, Soe Whalen.

Mr. and Mrs. Morris Murdy
have moved from Stratford to
Kitchener. The fornier's mother,
Mrs. C. Murdy, of Lucan, return-
ed home Friday from a visit with
them and with her sister in To-
ronto.
The owner of ticket No. 97
drawn at Lucan's ice carnival,
March 25, for the $10 basket of
groceries failed to claim the
prize, so Judy Seifried, owner of
ticket No. 652, became the proud
winner. By a strange coincidence,
a kind-hearted man saw school-
girl Judy standing at the arena
door, looking in with longing
eyes, and bought the lucky ticket
for her.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Noels
spent last Sunday with Mrs. W.
Dickins. Mrs, Noels remained for
a visit with her mother. On Mon-
day they went to London to meet
Mrs. Dickins' sister, Mrs, M.
Johnson and daughter, from the
West.
Mrs. Fred Simpson, who had
been on the sick list at the home
of Mr. Wes Revington, has re-
covered •sufficently to return to

PLAN EASTER SERVICES -Exeter and district churches
plan special events to celebrate the Easter season this week-
end, Services will feature special music, observance of sacra-
ment and of baptism, drama and films. Sunrise and Good
Friday services will be conducted in several churches.
Clandeboye Comments
Baptist, Pte. Claire, Que., took
the service at St. James' Church
on Palm Sunday and services on
Monday and Tuesday evening.
Mrs.. Thomas Barlow
Mrs. Thomas Barlow, 7.8, died
on March 31 on the farm where
she was •born in McGillivray
township.
She was the former Sara Jane
.Lewis and was the last surviving
member of the family of the late
Joseph and Maria Lewis.
She taught school in Marrs
School, McGillivray, and later in
Comber and in Lambton and
Waterloo counties.
Surviving besides her husband
are several nieces and nephews,
Funeral services were held
from St. Mary's Anglican Church,
Brinsley, last Saturday and inter-
ment made in the adjoining ceme-
tery.
Pall bearers were Eric Hod-
gins, Wilson , Hodgins, William
Northgrave, Joe Morgan, Clar-
ence Cunningham and Russell

The Clandeboye Women's In-
stitute will sponsor the play,
"Aunt Abby Answers An Ad; by
the Ailsa Craig Ladies Legion
Auxiliary, at the Lucan Memorial
Centre on April 14.

Mrs. Andy Carter was hostess

The town of Exeter contributes
the largest municipal grant to the
Ausable River Conservation Au-
thor%ty, a statement of the levy
shows.
!Share of the town, largest ur-
ban centre in the watershed,
amounts to $1,671.05. MaGi111-
ra3c Township pays $1,657.65 and
Stephen Township $1,606.47.
The levy ie divided equally be-
tween assessment and population.
Each municipality pays 0.2996
mills on its equalized assessment
and 37.3 cents for each resident.
Total tax levy of the Authority
amounts to $15,000. This is
matched by a grant „from the
provincial government.

Committee of the .Ontario $oi1

tion held at the Ontario Agricul-
tural College, recently, Harry
Hossfield, of Walkerton, was
elected chairman. Ross Chapman,
of Queensville is the new vice-
chairman and the executive con-
sists of Eric Loveys, Hickson;
Harold Hunter, Exeter; Lewis
Thomson, Embz'o; Harold Shantz,
New Hamburg, and Frank ,Strong,
of Guelph. •
It was noted that the quality
and demand for Ontario turnips
have improved in recent years.
However, the committee advises
that efforts alongboth these
lines must be Continued, and re-
commends that all turnip growers
for the domestic and export mar-
ket this year give special atten-
tion to the following:
(1) Use only registered, sized,
treated seed of the Laurentian.
variety. This information can be
found on the label of the pack-
age.
(2) Young plants should be
thinned before they are one inch
in height, or before the growth of
four leaves appear, in order to
produce more typical, attractive,
specimens.
(3) Apply Boron for the con-
trol of water -core, preferably by
spraying or dusting with the pro-
per materials at the proper time.
(4) Control Maggot injury by
the application of chemicals as
recommended by the Ontario De-
partment of Agriculture.
The Committee'also points out
that turnip growers should con-
tinue to improve their storage
facilities.
