South Thames Road Per= Met at the home of i, and m h A s d f Mrs. Alfred u ki s lr .., H n n, Exeter. Carelessness and lack .of epur- tesy on the part of drivers are the main safety prQblemst o a Y, this grown decided. Faulty driving failure to„grant the right of WAY to other vehicles ornades i au s ; driving on the wrong side of the road and failure to signal were listed as other problems. Education is needed to make drivers safety conscious and stricter ,enforcement 08 the laws; a strict check-up of cars for mechanical defects and more thorough driving tests would help solve the highway 'safety problem. Flinhville North Forupn • 171imville North Forum also placed speed at the top of the list of causes of highway accidents though realizing that the too slow driver Is also a highway hazllyd. They suggested stricter, obser- vance of the rule "Care, Courtesy and- Common Sense,” 'stiffer penalties for drunk drivers; stricter requirements .on lights and safety devices and more ppliee in cars not distinguished as police cars were given as means of solving safety problems, The final meeting of Elimville North Farm Forum Will be a social evening at the home of Mr. Philip Johns on April 7. "Speed is the number one kil- ler on the highways to -day," Parr Mine Farm Forum members agreed as they discussed , SaY e t Y on the Highway" at the borne of Air. and Mrs. Glenn Weido Mon- day da night. . g On the other hand the motorist who travels too slowly in heavy traffic is also responsible for acci- dents for be Causes other driv- ers to cut traffic to pass him. Failure to signal when turning or stopping or to stop at rail, road crossings, passing on hills and drunk driving were also list- ed as common causes of acci- dents. Pedestrians who walk on the travelled portion of the strets in urban centres after dark, pre- sent a dangerous problem to the motorist. Lack of courtesy on the Bart of drivers was deplpred by this group. Better policing of danger zones to check on speeders, slow drivers and those who pass on hills was suggested together with stiff pen- alties for those who break the laws. The accident rate could be cut by teaching, the safety rules of the highway in the schools, it was felt. Re-examination of driv- ers every five years and mechan- ical check-ups of motor vehicles were suggested. Showing the sante courtesy and manners when driving that are displayed in the homes would be a big step to- ward solving the accident prob lem, -- The Forum will meet with Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Jarrett on March 28 and will conclude the season by attending the rally in Exeter March 29. Fairfield Forum The 26 members of Fairfield Forum who met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Hepburn, also decided speed was the main contributor to lack of safety on the highway. Too few signs, and failure to obey them; drunk driving and fatigue are responsible for many accidents this group agreed. As steps that might be taken to solve the safety prdblem Fair- field members suggested level railway crossings should be abol- ished; roads should he widened so tractors could travel off the pavement; highways should be built outside the towns; motor- istsshould use signals; enforce- ment of the law against drunk drivers and more severe penalties. Mrs. Earl Heist was elected president of Fairfield Forum. Mr, and Mrs. Gordon Wilson, secre- tary -treasurers -with Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hepburn as assistants; Mrs. Herman Powe, press repor- ter.
