Over Half Raised
The public school objective of
$1.00 for, the Junior Red Cross
has been snore than half realized
by various fund-raising events
carried out by the pupils, Princi-
pal Arthur Hyde announced this
week.
!The campaign ends February

pupils and pop corn and candy

At recess on Thursdays pupils

Marcus Wild, 70, operator of
the pier booth at Grand Bend for
many years, was found -dead in
his car in his garage on River-
side Drive of the resort about 11
a.m, Tuesday.
Coroner Dr. A, M. Calder, of
Forest, said death was due to
asphyxiation' from carbon monox-
ide gas, No inquest will be held.
The man was found by his.
sister and her husband, Mr, and
Mrs. Frank Statton, Dr. V. Gu -
lens, of Dashwood, who attended,
said death had occurred about 12
hours before.
Besides operating the pier
booth, Mr, Wild conducted a boat
rental business, all of which he
sold last year.
He was born in the Grand Bend
district and had lived in the area
all his life.

Two SHIMS competitors for
district WOSSA public speaking
honors lost out Wednesday to two
students from Catholic Central,
London, In a contest at the local
school.
The winners were Mary Lyune
Portland and John King who will
go to provincial competitions. Al-
lison Clark and Allan Taylor were
the local contestants,
Judges Were Claude Farrow, W.,
G. Cochrane, and G. G. Gardiner.
In the senior WOSSA. conipeti-
tion at the Weal school on Mon-
day, Catherine Ondrejicka and
Michael Farrow won the right to
compete in regional finals.

Grand Bend Youth
Remains Serious
A Grand Bend youth, involved
in a fatal accident near Thedford
Monday night, remains in serious

Dale Pfile, 19 -year-old son of
Mr .and Mrs, Herbert Pfile, is
suffering from multiple lacera-
tions to the head, leg and other
parts of his body. He received 26
stitches in his face.
The youth was a passenger in
a car which crashed into the
bridge over the Ausable River
on No. 7 Highway. Earl Alex-
ander, of Thedford, died from
injuries received in the crash and
three other youths are seriously
injured, They were oxi their way
to a basketball game in London.
Thirty Years With Bank
Miss Greta Harness was honor-
ed by members of the staff of
the Bank of Montreal last Wed-
nesday at the conclusion of her
thirty years of service at the
bank.
- (Miss Harness was presented
with a Colport china flower orna-
ment and a decorated anniversary

At the mid -winter examination
of the Royal Conservatory of
Music, Nelson McClinchey passed
his grade 2 theory with first-class
honors, and grade 8 piano with
honors. Nelson, son of Mr, and
Mrs. Carl McClinchey, of Kippen,
was a Pupil of- the late J. L. Nicol
and is now a pupil of Miss 'Greta
Laramie.

Hensel), Juniors, competing for
the WOAA Junior "D" amnion -
ship, will be out to even their
best -of -five series with Wiarton
Thursday night in the second
game at Hensall areua.
Wiarton won the first con-
test on Saturday 7-4 but the Hen-
sall team was without the ser-
vices of its regular goaltender,
Dick McFalls. With 1VicFalls back
in the nets, team officials are con-
fident the Hensel' crew can oust
Wiarton for the title,

Observers Corps was held in the
Legion hall last Friday, F/0. Mull
of London, gave a lecture and
showed several war films includ-
ing one entitled "A Plane, a
Bomb, a City." Peter McNaughton
is chief observer for Hensall.

Fractures Right Wrist
Mr, Clarence McNaughton,
while unloading his truck of egg
crates, had the misfortune to
slip and fall on some ice, causing
a compound fracture of his right
wrist. X-rays taekn at South Hu-
ron Hospital, Exeter, revealed
the fracture. He was released
from hospital Friday evening and
is recuperating at his home. Dr.
J. C. Goddard attended.
